A spring chosen in the Carpathians

A Swiss entrepreneur, a banker friend and a fund.

Dorna is a brand that was built from scratch in post-communist Romania and then divided in two. Its creator was Jean Valvis, whom the business daily Ziarul Financiar described in 2008 as a Swiss entrepreneur with roots in Greece who first came to Romania in 1992. In 2003 the same paper reported that Valvis had teamed up with a banker friend and with the Societe Generale Romania Fund to create the Dorna brand, which then covered both mineral waters and dairy products.

The name points to the Dorna country of the Eastern Carpathians, around the spa town of Vatra Dornei in Suceava County. Romanian Wikipedia’s article on the town says its mineral springs became known to local shepherds around 1750, were first analysed around 1790, and were studied in 1805 by a physician, Dr Plusch, who proposed developing them; the resort grew through the nineteenth century, with springs given names such as Sentinela and Ferdinand.

Valvis has described the choice of water as his own. “I created Dorna myself, I did not inherit it, I selected it as a spring because I knew it was extraordinary,” he told Ziarul Financiar in 2003. Romanian Wikipedia says he founded the water company, Dorna Apemin, in 1994, and built three factories between 1996 and 1999 under the Dorna brand in Vatra Dornei and Suceava. By the time he sold it, the business held three brands: Dorna Ape Minerale (Dorna Mineral Waters), Poiana Negri and White Spring, Ziarul Financiar reported, and Dorna was one of the leading players in the Romanian mineral-water market, with a share the paper put at 13 per cent.

The dairy side came later. Romanian Wikipedia dates Dorna Lactate to 1998, and the dairy products were sold under the LaDorna name. For a few years, then, one brand family spanned bottled water and milk products, held together by a single founder and a single place name.

The waters go to Coca-Cola.

The first split came in 2002. Dorna Apemin was sold to Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company and The Coca-Cola Company, a deal both the English and Romanian Wikipedia articles on Valvis date to that year. Writing in May 2003, Ziarul Financiar said the water business had been bought in August of the previous year, that the price had been disclosed only a year after the deal was struck, and that Coca-Cola had taken over all the Dorna Apemin brands and products. The paper noted that Coca-Cola Hellenic and The Coca-Cola Company had shared the purchase between them.

Integration was gradual. According to the same report, the Dorna waters had not been promoted at all, nor presented as part of Coca-Cola, until shortly before the article appeared, when the company began advertising the brand. Coca-Cola Hellenic Romania’s PR manager told the paper that the company was then focused on bringing Dorna into the Coca-Cola system. Ziarul Financiar added that Coca-Cola Hellenic had reported Dorna, together with the Swiss water Valser bought the year before, as contributing 2 per cent of its first-quarter sales, and that Dorna and new launches had helped drive double-digit growth in its Romanian volumes. Valvis, the paper said, stayed on as a consultant to Coca-Cola on the brand.

Dorna water remains part of the Coca-Cola system in Romania today: in October 2026 the brand’s own domain, dorna.ro, redirected to a Dorna page on Coca-Cola’s Romanian website, titled “Dorna, gata de schimbare” (Dorna, ready for change).

Design and documentation.

The seven brands in this group all make food or drink, and all of them come from Romania or Bulgaria: Ursus, Timișoreana, Borsec, Dorna, Napolact, ROM and Zagorka. Food and drink brands from these two countries in general sit at many different points in the trade, from names that still carry a town or a region to names that now belong to much larger international groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a village shop to a supermarket shelf.

A food or drink brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single product than by a pack, a name and the taste or occasion it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its products are actually made and packed.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

LaDorna

The dairy goes to Lactalis.

Valvis kept the dairy business after the water sale and, Ziarul Financiar reported in 2003, planned to put the proceeds into it, concentrating on the LaDorna brand. Five years later he sold that too. On 16 April 2008 he signed the sale of the LaDorna group to the French dairy company Lactalis, which Ziarul Financiar described as the world’s second-largest dairy producer and the largest in Europe. The transaction, which still required approval from Romania’s Competition Council, covered Dorna SA, Dorna Lactate and Dorna Helas, a distribution company set up in Greece, Valvis told the paper.

The paper called it the second exit from the Dorna business, and said LaDorna was then one of the five largest dairy companies in Romania. Valvis said talks had been held with five companies, four of them strategic buyers, and that Lactalis was the last to join the race; a memorandum of understanding was signed in January 2008 and the deal closed in April. “I wanted to exit because I still feel creative and want to continue to invest in my future, as I did after the sale of Dorna mineral waters,” he said. Romanian Wikipedia lists the LaDorna group’s companies at the time of the sale as including Dorna Lactate, Dorna Brânzeturi, LaDorna Cheese and LaDorna Agri. Valvis went on to other ventures, Romanian Wikipedia says, among them wine at Sâmburești and the Aqua Carpatica mineral water, launched in 2010.

The result is a name that now belongs to two different multinational owners. The water carries the Dorna name under Coca-Cola HBC in Romania, while the dairy business that grew up beside it passed to Lactalis. Both trace back to the same founder and to the same mountain district around Vatra Dornei.

For a design guide, Dorna shows how a regional place name can be stretched across very different products by one founder, and how it survives being divided between buyers. Compare Borsec, the older Transylvanian mineral water, and Napolact, another Romanian dairy brand. For this guide we use a forest green, a milky meadow white and a spring blue with a clean sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
