Jasper, 1950

A cabinet company that bought a famous name.

Kimball is a furniture brand from Jasper, Indiana, a town in the south-west of the state. English Wikipedia says the business was founded there in 1950 by Arnold Habig, under the name Jasper Corporation, to make television cabinets, other cabinets and furniture. The company’s own “Who we are” page dates the business to the same year, saying Kimball International “began as a family business in 1950.”

The name on the door came from somewhere else. Wikipedia traces it to 1857, when William Wallace Kimball opened a piano dealership in Chicago that grew into W.W. Kimball and Company, a maker of pianos and organs. In 1959, the encyclopedia says, Habig bought the W.W. Kimball Company from the last remaining Kimball family heir, and Jasper held it as a wholly owned subsidiary. According to Wikipedia, piano production moved to West Baden, Indiana, in 1961.

For the next two decades the Indiana company built a business around keyboards as well as cabinets. English Wikipedia, citing the Encyclopedia of Keyboard Instruments (2005), says Jasper bought the Austrian piano maker Bösendorfer in 1966, and that Bösendorfer was sold to Austrian buyers in 2002. The same article records that in 1980 Kimball bought the New York piano maker Krakauer Brothers and Conn Keyboards.

In 1974, Wikipedia says, Jasper changed its own name to Kimball International, so the piano name became the name of the whole group. The company went public in September 1976. The Kimball piano and organ business was discontinued in February 1996, Wikipedia adds, which left the name attached chiefly to furniture: the word that once sat on the fallboard of an upright piano now sits on desks, tables and chairs.

Workplace, health and hospitality.

Furniture brands were added alongside the piano business long before the pianos stopped. English Wikipedia says National was formed in 1980 as National Office Furniture, aimed at mid-priced office furniture, and that the company entered the lodging market with Kimball Hospitality in 1985. Today the company’s own site lists its family of brands as Kimball, National, Etc., Interwoven, David Edward, Kimball Hospitality and D’style, and describes its expertise as lying in three markets: workplace, health and hospitality.

The other half of the old group went its own way in the middle of the 2010s. According to English Wikipedia, Kimball International announced on 31 October 2014 that it would spin off its electronics manufacturing business as Kimball Electronics, a step the encyclopedia says left “a new furniture company” behind. From that point the Kimball name in contract interiors referred to furniture alone.

On where the furniture is made, English Wikipedia says the Kimball brand has facilities in Jasper and Salem, Indiana, with showrooms in major US cities.

The brand’s most visible design moments have been its showrooms at NeoCon, the contract-furniture fair in Chicago. The design studio O+A, on its own project page, describes the Kimball showroom it designed for NeoCon 2015: a set of spaces overlooking the elevated train line and the Chicago River, organised like a small city in which each area acted as a neighbourhood. O+A says the design used bold colours, textures and patterns, mixed rough and refined materials, and set angular office furniture against geometric wall graphics and signage that suggested city infrastructure. The point of the exercise, in the studio’s description, was to show how the same furniture could be adapted to different kinds of work and leisure inside one office.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group all make furniture for workplaces: office chairs, desks, storage, panel systems and the tables and seating that fill meeting rooms, reception areas and, for some of them, hospitals and schools. Contract office-furniture makers come from very different starting points, from family workshops that once made chairs for the home to metal-goods firms and companies founded around a single product, and over the decades many of them have changed owners, joined larger groups or moved where their furniture is built.

In this trade a brand’s identity is carried less by a logo on a box than by a catalogue, a showroom, a named chair or system and the designers credited with it, because the furniture is usually chosen by architects, designers and facilities buyers rather than picked off a shelf. That makes the plain questions behind each name worth asking: who started it, who owns it now, and where its furniture is actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself, and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

A plain American grotesque — sturdy, direct and unfussy, like a catalogue page from the Midwest. (Specimen set in Libre Franklin, a grotesque STAND-IN; NOT the Kimball logo.)

Kimball

From Jasper Corporation to HNI.

The latest change of ownership came in 2023. English Wikipedia says HNI Corporation, the Muscatine, Iowa, furniture group, announced an agreement to acquire Kimball International on 8 March 2023. HNI’s own release, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and dated 1 June 2023, announced that the acquisition had been completed, described Kimball International as a commercial furnishings company with expertise in workplace, health and hospitality, and said HNI’s headquarters would remain in Muscatine while Kimball International would continue to be based in Jasper, Indiana.

Kimball’s own site now describes Kimball International as a business unit of HNI Corporation, based in Jasper. That places the brand in the same group as HNI’s other office-furniture names, among them HON, Allsteel and Gunlocke, while the Kimball name and the Jasper base stay in place.

Seen in sequence, the identity is a story of a name outliving its first product. A cabinet company took the name of a Chicago piano firm, made it its corporate name, carried it through pianos, organs, electronics and hotel furniture, and finally kept it for workplace and healthcare furniture under a new parent. The palette here is our own interpretation: a deep Jasper navy, a warm maple veneer tone taken from the company’s cabinet-making roots, and a pale showroom chalk.

For a design guide, Kimball shows how a brand name can be bought, kept and repurposed across very different products while the company’s home town stays fixed, with trade-fair showrooms doing much of the visual work. Compare HON, its sister brand under HNI, and Steelcase, the Michigan office-furniture maker. For this guide we use Jasper navy, maple veneer and showroom chalk with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
