Toronto, 1983

A second company, aimed at architects.

Teknion is an office-furniture company based in Toronto. It was established in 1983 by Saul Feldberg, who had already built another furniture business. The trade journal officeinsight, in a notice published on 22 January 2023, said Feldberg founded Global in 1966 with the aim of making an office chair ordinary people could afford, and that in 1983 he established Teknion “to pursue the architecture and design community.” Interior Design, writing on 17 January 2023, gave the same years and the same distinction: Global Furniture Group for an efficient, affordable chair, Teknion with the architecture and design community in mind.

That difference in audience is the root of the brand. Global began with an affordable office chair; Teknion was set up to be specified by architects and interior designers on larger office projects. Both companies stayed in the family. officeinsight said in 2023 that Saul Feldberg’s sons were running them, Joel Feldberg at Global and David Feldberg at Teknion. Both reports were published on Saul Feldberg’s death in January 2023.

Teknion started with one product. In a conversation with David Feldberg published on 19 February 2024, officeinsight’s Rob Kirkbride wrote that Teknion was born in 1983 with the Teknion Office System, known as T/O/S, a furniture system designed for the changing office. The article said the new company grew out of the family’s Global business, which at that point was mainly focused on chairs.

The company writes its name as a single word with one capital, Teknion, and the first product carried it as an initialism: T/O/S, the Teknion Office System. From the start, then, the brand was attached to a system for the office rather than to a single chair.

Systems, textiles and showrooms.

The brand grew through large office projects. In the same 2024 conversation, officeinsight reported that Teknion had won a Boeing project in Everett, Washington, and that a major share of the furniture for Apple Park, Apple’s California campus, had gone to Teknion. The article also said the company had founded Studio TK, a brand focused on social spaces, about a decade earlier.

Textiles became a separate identity in 2016. Metropolis, in an article by Belinda Lanks published on 10 June 2016, reported that Teknion Textiles was relaunching at NeoCon that month as Luum. The magazine said the textile business had been seen by potential customers as an arm of Teknion Furniture, its Toronto-based parent, and described the fibre artist and weaver Suzanne Tick, a former consultant to Knoll Textiles, as the driving force behind the new brand’s aesthetic. Giving the fabrics their own name let them be sold on their own terms while staying inside the group.

Showrooms carry much of the brand in the United States. officeinsight listed Teknion showrooms in Chicago’s Fulton Market and in The Merchandise Mart, and at the Interior Design Center in New York, with others across North America. The company’s current website groups its offer under several names, including Teknion, Teknion Architectural Interiors, Studio TK and Luum Textiles.

On where the furniture is made, Toronto is the centre. Lexpert, reporting in May 2008, described Teknion as a Toronto-based maker of office furniture and systems with offices and facilities in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Pacific Rim. officeinsight reported in February 2024 that a new seating plant was under construction near the company’s Toronto headquarters.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group all make furniture for workplaces: office chairs, desks, storage, panel systems and the tables and seating that fill meeting rooms, reception areas and, for some of them, hospitals and schools. Contract office-furniture makers come from very different starting points, from family workshops that once made chairs for the home to metal-goods firms and companies founded around a single product, and over the decades many of them have changed owners, joined larger groups or moved where their furniture is built.

In this trade a brand’s identity is carried less by a logo on a box than by a catalogue, a showroom, a named chair or system and the designers credited with it, because the furniture is usually chosen by architects, designers and facilities buyers rather than picked off a shelf. That makes the plain questions behind each name worth asking: who started it, who owns it now, and where its furniture is actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself, and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Teknion

Listed, then private again.

Teknion spent a period as a listed company before returning to private ownership. Lexpert, the Canadian legal publication, reported on 1 May 2008 that on 27 February 2008 a company named 2158436 Ontario Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teknion’s controlling shareholder A-Tean Holdings Limited, had acquired Teknion Corporation. The publication named the law firms on each side: Goodmans for A-Tean, Bennett Jones for Teknion’s special committee and Torys for Teknion.

Since then the company has been privately held and run by the family. David Feldberg is Teknion’s chief executive. officeinsight’s 2024 profile said he had a career as a lawyer before joining the family business, and that Teknion was marking its fortieth anniversary around the time of the interview. His brother Joel has led Global Furniture Group, the sister company founded by their father in 1966.

The two Feldberg companies make an instructive pair. Global was built on an affordable chair; Teknion was set up for the architecture and design community and built its name on a panel system, then added a social-space brand and a textiles brand with their own names. In the Canadian office-furniture world, the family therefore runs two distinct identities from the same city rather than one. The palette here is our own interpretation: a deep graphite, a pale screen grey and a single signal vermilion.

For a design guide, Teknion shows how a company can separate its audiences by brand, keeping systems furniture, social-space furniture and textiles under distinct names while its Toronto base and family ownership stay constant. Compare Global Furniture Group, its sister company, and Keilhauer, another Canadian office-furniture maker. For this guide we use graphite, screen grey and signal vermilion with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
