Middlebury, 2012

Three founders who had done it before.

Grand Design RV is a maker of towable recreational vehicles: fifth wheels that hitch into the bed of a pickup truck, travel trailers that ride on a ball hitch, and toy haulers with a garage at the back for motorbikes or quad bikes. Its own website gives its corporate office as Middlebury, Indiana, a small town in Elkhart County in the north of the state. Summit Partners, the investment firm that backed the company, also lists Middlebury as its location.

The founding facts come from the announcement that changed the company’s ownership. On 3 October 2016, Winnebago Industries said it had agreed to buy the business, and its press release, reproduced by Summit Partners, says Grand Design was founded in 2012 by Don Clark, Ron Fenech and Bill Fenech. The same release calls Clark the company’s co-founder and chief executive.

The three had worked together before. Summit Partners’ profile of the company says the trio “had been part of the ownership team” of Keystone RV, another Summit investment, which Thor Industries acquired in 2001. In Summit’s telling, the founders set out to offer towable fifth-wheel RVs with “an intense focus on customer and dealer satisfaction.” Summit says it invested in Grand Design in 2014, two years after the company started.

The company’s own “Our Story” page sets out four short values in the same voice: “Do the right thing,” “Choose quality over shortcuts,” “Put people first” and “Build connections that last.”

Leadership has stayed with a founder. In October 2026 the company’s leadership page still listed Don Clark as co-founder, CEO and president.

Reflection, Solitude, Momentum, Imagine — and then a motorhome.

Grand Design named its model families with words rather than numbers or codes. Winnebago’s announcement of the completed purchase, dated 8 November 2016 and filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, names the four lines the company was making at the time: the Reflection fifth wheel and travel trailer, the Solitude extended-stay fifth wheel, the Momentum toy hauler and the lightweight Imagine travel trailer.

Each of those names is a single English word. Individual floor plans are marked with a code of numbers and letters after the family name, as with the Solitude 414LJMJ fifth wheel or the Momentum 399M toy hauler that the company’s website featured in October 2026.

The range has since moved beyond towables. In October 2026 the company’s website carried a menu for Class C motorhomes alongside its trailers, and promoted the Lineage name on two motorised products: the Lineage VP camper van and the Lineage E Series motorhome. The same site also featured the Transcend name, on a lighter travel trailer.

The way the brand talks to buyers is set out on its website. The website invites visitors to book a factory tour, offers an “Ask an Expert” service for questions about specifications, warranty and dealers, and gives a whole section of its story to owners. “Our owners didn’t just buy RVs, they built a community,” the company writes, describing friendships and traditions formed among them, “far beyond the campground.”

The headline on the home page in October 2026 kept to the same theme: “The best views are the ones you share.” The site pairs it with three short headings, quality, innovation and connection, each with a line of copy beneath.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group all build recreational vehicles: towable travel trailers and fifth wheels that hitch behind a car or truck, and motorhomes that carry their own engine. Some are family firms that still carry a founder’s name or story; others now belong to larger groups that own several RV names side by side, and a single brand can change hands more than once while keeping its badge, its model families and its home town.

An RV brand’s identity is carried by more than a logo. Model names, the lettering and graphics along a side wall, the shape and finish of the body, the brochure and the owners’ club all play a part, and a name can outlast several owners and factories. That makes a few plain questions worth asking of each one: who started it, who owns it now, and where its vehicles are actually built.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where it builds and how its names and graphics have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Grand Design

From a Summit investment to a Winnebago brand.

The change of ownership came four years after the founding. Winnebago Industries, the motorhome maker from Forest City, Iowa, announced its agreement to buy Grand Design on 3 October 2016 and said the purchase was complete on 8 November 2016. Grand Design was then a portfolio company of Summit Partners, which had backed it since 2014. Winnebago has owned Grand Design since 2016.

In the October announcement Winnebago’s chief executive, Michael Happe, said Grand Design would accelerate Winnebago’s expansion in the towables business. Don Clark, for his part, said the company looked forward to “maintaining our unique identity as an agile competitor” while drawing on Winnebago’s platform. In practice Grand Design has kept its own name, its own model families and its own website, and it has stayed in Middlebury.

Its parent has moved on around it. English Wikipedia, citing an Associated Press report of August 2021, says Winnebago moved its corporate headquarters from Forest City to Eden Prairie, Minnesota, with effect from 1 December 2021, while keeping manufacturing in Forest City. The same article lists Grand Design among Winnebago’s subsidiaries alongside Newmar, the Nappanee motorhome maker Winnebago bought in 2019, as well as the boat builders Chris-Craft and Barletta.

That leaves Grand Design as a towable maker inside Winnebago Industries and, with the Lineage models, a builder of motorhomes as well. The founders who started it in 2012 had already been through one sale, of Keystone RV to Thor Industries in 2001, before this one.

For a design guide, Grand Design shows how a young RV maker can build an identity from plain one-word model names, a founder who stayed on and a steady message about owners and community, even inside a larger group. Compare Winnebago, its parent, and Keystone RV, where its founders worked before. For this guide we use highway navy, aluminium skin and campfire amber with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
