TH and OR

Two investors and an aluminium trailer.

Thor Industries was founded on 29 August 1980, when Wade F.B. Thompson and Peter B. Orthwein acquired Airstream, the company says. English Wikipedia adds that they bought it from Beatrice Foods, and that the pair had earlier acquired the Hi-Lo Trailer Company. The name itself is a monogram of its founders: Wikipedia says “Thor” combines the first two letters of each man’s surname — TH from Thompson, OR from Orthwein.

Airstream, the aluminium travel-trailer maker of Jackson Center, Ohio, had struggled in the downturn of the late 1970s, and Thor says it returned to profitability in its first year under the new owners by improving quality while reducing costs. Jackson Center was also Thor’s first headquarters, according to Wikipedia.

That first purchase still anchors the group. English Wikipedia describes Airstream as a maker of travel trailers and motorhomes known for its all-aluminium models, founded by Wally Byam in the 1930s, building in Jackson Center since the 1950s and sold to Beatrice Foods in 1967, before Thompson and Orthwein bought it. Its model names include the Flying Cloud, Bambi, Classic and Basecamp.

The early acquisitions came quickly. Thor says it bought General Coach, a Canadian maker of travel trailers and fifth wheels, in 1982; became a public company in 1984, trading over the counter; and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1986, where Wikipedia gives its ticker as THO.

For a time Thor was also a bus maker. It entered the small and mid-size bus business in 1988 by acquiring ElDorado, added National Coach in 1991 and Champion Bus in 1998, and later Goshen Coach, Krystal Infinity and the bus assets of Federal Coach, according to its own history page. In 2013 it sold the whole bus business to Allied Specialty Vehicles, the company says.

Thor grew mainly by acquisition. Its own timeline records Dutchmen in 1991, Four Winds International, a maker of Class A and Class C motorhomes, in 1992, Komfort in 1995, and a start-up, Thor California, in 1996. In 2001 it bought Keystone RV; in 2003 Damon, a Class A motorhome maker, and Breckenridge, a builder of park trailers; and in 2004 CrossRoads RV. In 2010 it bought SJC Industries, an ambulance maker, in March and Heartland RV in September, and Wikipedia says it combined Damon and Four Winds that year as Thor Motor Coach.

Several of these businesses are in northern Indiana: Wikipedia describes Keystone as based in Goshen, Heartland in Elkhart, Dutchmen in Goshen and CrossRoads in Topeka, Indiana. Thor itself followed them: in the spring of 2013 it moved its headquarters from Jackson Center, Ohio, to Elkhart, Indiana, Wikipedia says, while Airstream stayed in Ohio.

The same year Thor bought the former Navistar RV production campus in Wakarusa, Indiana, through a subsidiary, as well as the assets of Livin’ Lite, a maker of lightweight aluminium RVs, and of Bison Coach, which builds horse trailers with living quarters, the company says. KZ followed in 2014, and in 2015 its Heartland subsidiary bought Cruiser RV and the fifth-wheel maker DRV Luxury Suites, both of Howe, Indiana, along with the Elkhart aluminium extruder Postle Aluminum.

Leadership passed from the founders over the same period. Wikipedia says Thompson stepped down as chief executive in November 2009 and was succeeded by Orthwein, and that in August 2013 Bob Martin, then chief operating officer, became chief executive while Orthwein became chairman.

Elkhart County and the RV trade.

The brands in this group all build recreational vehicles: towable travel trailers and fifth wheels that hitch behind a car or truck, and motorhomes that carry their own engine. Some are family firms that still carry a founder’s name or story; others now belong to larger groups that own several RV names side by side, and a single brand can change hands more than once while keeping its badge, its model families and its home town.

An RV brand’s identity is carried by more than a logo. Model names, the lettering and graphics along a side wall, the shape and finish of the body, the brochure and the owners’ club all play a part, and a name can outlast several owners and factories. That makes a few plain questions worth asking of each one: who started it, who owns it now, and where its vehicles are actually built.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where it builds and how its names and graphics have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Thor Industries

From Elkhart to Bad Waldsee.

Bigger purchases followed. On 1 July 2016 Thor announced the purchase of Jayco of Middlebury, Indiana, the South Bend station ABC57 reported that day; Thor’s own history page dates the deal to June 2016 and says it brought in Jayco, Starcraft RV, Highland Ridge RV and Entegra Coach. In September 2018 Thor agreed to buy the Erwin Hymer Group of Bad Waldsee, Germany, Wikipedia says — a company founded by Erwin Hymer in 1923 — and Thor says it completed the purchase in February 2019. In December 2020 it bought the Tiffin Group, a family-owned maker of Class A motorhomes since 1972 with operations in Alabama and Mississippi, and in September 2021 Airxcel, a parts supplier from Wichita, Kansas, according to its history page.

Thor is a holding company rather than a single nameplate, and its brands keep their own identities. Its “family of companies” page lists North American RV makers including Airstream, DRV Luxury Suites, Entegra Coach, Heartland RV, Jayco, Keystone RV, KZ, Open Range, Thor Motor Coach, Tiffin Motorhomes and Venture RV; European caravan and motorhome makers including Hymer, Bürstner, Dethleffs, Carado, Eriba, Laika, LMC, Niesmann + Bischoff, Sunlight and Elddis; and component businesses such as Airxcel, Dicor Products and MaxxAir.

Where the vehicles are made follows those brands. English Wikipedia lists Thor manufacturing in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Idaho and Oregon; Thor says Jayco has additional facilities in Idaho and that the Tiffin Group operates in Alabama and Mississippi.

For a design guide, Thor Industries shows how a holding company can let many acquired nameplates keep their own logos while the parent stays in the background. Compare Airstream, the trailer maker it was founded to buy, and Keystone RV, one of its Indiana towable makers. For this guide we use charcoal, brushed steel and a tail-light red with a condensed sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
