A name from the network

An NBCUniversal service that borrowed a bird.

Peacock is the streaming service of NBCUniversal, the entertainment division of Comcast. English Wikipedia says NBCUniversal announced plans for a streaming service on 14 January 2019, to sit within its Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises division and to be offered in a free, advertising-supported version as well as paid versions. At that stage the service had no public name.

The name arrived on 17 September 2019. Advanced Television reported that day that NBCUniversal’s planned service had been called Peacock, and that the name was a reference to the NBC network’s logo. The same report said the service was then scheduled to launch in April 2020, and that its catalogue would draw on the television and film libraries of NBCUniversal, including Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, along with new original series. It reported that Peacock would be the exclusive streaming home of the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation, that NBCUniversal had already arranged to bring The Office to the service from Netflix in 2021, and that revivals of Saved by the Bell and Punky Brewster and a reboot of Battlestar Galactica were planned. It quoted Bonnie Hammer, then chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises, on why the company had chosen the name.

The reference is to the multicoloured bird in NBC’s own network identity. That history belongs to NBC, not to the streaming service, and it is the context for the name rather than part of Peacock’s own design record.

The launch plan changed in early 2020. TVLine reported on 16 January 2020 that NBCUniversal had announced a national launch on 15 July 2020, with early access for Comcast Xfinity X1 and Flex customers from 15 April 2020. MacTrast, citing Reuters, reported in April 2020 that the service was opening for some Comcast customers that week, with a wider launch to follow in July. Both reports described a free, advertising-supported tier alongside paid options.

Colour

A logo, a custom font and a motion language.

The visual identity was developed with loyalkaspar, the New York branding and motion agency that also worked on Paramount+. On its own portfolio page for Peacock, the agency lists its deliverables as logo design, a custom font, brand architecture, brand design and a motion language, and says it collaborated with NBCUniversal in the early stages of the process. The agency says the aim was a brand with its own presence in streaming that would still invoke NBCUniversal’s history, and that it leaned into the quirkiness of the peafowl the service is named after to make the brand feel fun and approachable.

The resulting logo pairs a wordmark with a short vertical stack of coloured dots set beside it, and the agency’s page presents the logo alongside the custom font and the motion work as parts of one system rather than as separate pieces. The page also quotes Bonnie Hammer, credited there as vice chairman of NBCUniversal, describing the name as a nod to the company’s legacy.

The identity was refined in 2026. English Wikipedia says that in May 2026 Peacock modified its 2020 logo with the aim of making it more scalable, particularly on mobile screens. According to that account, one dot was removed from the stack to reduce visual clutter, the remaining dots were given a gradient, and notches that had marked the lower curves of the letters were removed. The change kept the structure of the original mark, a wordmark and a stack of dots, while simplifying both for small sizes.

Peacock has remained with the same owner since its launch. NBCUniversal has run the service from the outset, and Comcast, NBCUniversal’s parent, has owned it since 2020. Wikipedia describes the service as the main streaming outlet for the NBC Sports and Telemundo Deportes divisions, which places live sport alongside the entertainment catalogue inside the same identity.

Typography

Design and documentation.

A streaming service meets its audience in small rectangles before anything else. The app icon on a phone, a smart-TV home row or a set-top menu is usually the first brand surface a viewer touches, so it has to read at thumbnail size, against light and dark system themes, and next to rival tiles. Designers working at that size weigh a single letterform, a compact symbol or a short wordmark against a full logo lock-up.

The launch screen and the short ident that plays before a title do a different job. They borrow from broadcast branding: a few seconds of motion, sometimes a sound cue, that tells the viewer whose service they are inside. For designers, the useful exercise is to study how a static mark behaves once it moves, and how much of the identity survives when the animation is cut to a single frame.

Colour ownership is the third lever. A service can keep one hue across its icon, buttons, highlights and marketing, or work with a multicolour mark and decide which colour leads in each context. The guides below look at how each name, mark and palette is documented, without reproducing any of them.

Peacock

A borrowed name, an owned shape.

Peacock’s identity begins with a borrowed name. The word points straight at the NBC network’s logo, as Advanced Television noted when the name was announced in 2019, yet the streaming brand does not reuse that logo. Instead loyalkaspar built a separate system: a wordmark, a custom font, a motion language and a column of coloured dots rather than a drawn bird.

That approach lets the service share a reference with its sister network while keeping a mark of its own. On a phone or a television home screen, the dots carry the colour and the wordmark carries the name. Wikipedia describes the 2026 refinement, with one fewer dot, a gradient and simpler letter curves, as a change made for scalability, particularly on mobile.

The launch history is part of the brand too. The service was named in September 2019 with an April 2020 launch in view, opened to Comcast Xfinity customers in April 2020 and reached the rest of the United States in July 2020, as TVLine and MacTrast reported at the time. Through those changes the name, the agency’s system and the owner stayed the same.

For a design guide, Peacock shows how a streaming brand can take its name from a broadcast symbol and still build a distinct mark, using a column of colour beside a plain wordmark so that the identity works both in full colour and in one tone. Compare it with Paramount+, whose mountain mark was rebuilt by the same agency, and Hulu, another streaming service built around a wordmark and one colour. For this guide we use wordmark black with feather gold, violet and blue and a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
