Gambellara, 1821

A hillside plot near Vicenza, and a century of growing grapes.

Zonin1821 is a family wine group with its headquarters in Gambellara, a hill town near Vicenza in the Veneto. The year in the name is where the company starts its own story. Its anniversary press kit of 2021 says that in 1821 Giovanni Battista (Giobatta) Zonin and Girolamo Antonio Zonin were among the owners of a ronco arborato vitato, a piece of hillside land suited to vines, and that for the next hundred years the family’s link to the land was the growing of grapes.

The wine business itself, the company says, began in 1921. In the aftermath of the First World War, the 22-year-old Domenico Zonin asked his father for his share of the inheritance and used it to set up a small production of wines and liqueurs, sold in the surrounding area; the company counts this as the start of Cantine Zonin. It says the firm has kept its headquarters in Gambellara ever since, and that the cellars there include a barrel room built in the early 20th century and a room for ageing Recioto di Gambellara, the area’s traditional sweet wine.

Growth, in the company’s account, came in two waves: international sales from the late 1960s, and from the 1970s the purchase of wine estates in other regions. Its list of milestones gives Ca’ Bolani in Friuli in 1970, Castello di Albola in Chianti Classico in 1979, Castello del Poggio in Piedmont in 1985, Tenuta Il Bosco in Lombardy’s Oltrepò Pavese in 1987, Principi di Butera in Sicily in 1997, Rocca di Montemassi in Tuscany’s Maremma in 1999 and Masseria Altemura in Puglia in 2000. In 2017, the company says, it set up a joint venture in Chile with the Vial family under the name Dos Almas.

By the bicentenary the family had reached what it calls its seventh generation. Il Sole 24 Ore reported in October 2021 that the brothers Domenico, Francesco and Michele Zonin were chairman and vice-chairmen, alongside a chief executive from outside the family, and that the investment firm 21 Invest had held a minority stake of about 36 per cent since 2018.

Prosecco, a numbered collection and a family name in gold.

Prosecco is the brand’s calling card abroad. Il Sole 24 Ore reported in 2021 that Prosecco made up about a fifth of the group’s production and that about 84 per cent of its sales were outside Italy, with the United States the largest market. The company says it backed Prosecco even before the wine had its own protected designation, and in 2021 it joined Italian producers opposing Croatia’s request to register “Prosek” as a traditional term in the European Union, the newspaper reported.

The year 1821 does double duty as a product name. The company groups its main sparkling wines as the 1821 Collection, with Cuvée 1821, Rosé 1821, Prestige 1821 and a Special Cuvée; Prestige 1821 is a Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Cuvée 1821, on the market since 2006, was redesigned in October 2017: Wine Industry Advisor and the packaging press described a larger label with a clean-cut bar of teal set against the dark bottle, and quoted Tim Matz, then general manager of ZoninUSA, on reinterpreting a classic Prosecco for modern tastes. Still wines sit in families with Italian names, such as I Classici and I Gioielli.

The family name itself carries the heritage. For the bicentenary in 2021 the company’s press kit set the words “Famiglia Zonin” above “dal 1821” beneath a small crest, framed by gold Art Deco patterns and the hashtag #Zonin200Years, and its biographies describe the brothers as the seventh generation.

The American arm took the date as its name. Wine Industry Advisor reported that on 15 July 2019 Zonin USA, the group’s US importer, became 1821 Fine Wines & Spirits, “a Zonin family company”, with a redesigned logo and a portfolio widening beyond Italian wine to the Chilean Dos Almas wines and ready-to-drink cocktails; Francesco Zonin chaired it.

The seven brands in this group are all Italian wine names: Antinori, Santa Margherita, Ruffino, Masi, Zonin, Bolla and Cavit. Wine brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family houses that still carry a founder’s name to cooperatives owned by their growers and labels that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a restaurant list.

A wine brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its wine is actually made and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its wine is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Zonin1821

A Virginia estate, and a family group rethinking its land.

The group’s one American estate was Barboursville Vineyards in Virginia, founded by Gianni Zonin in 1976 on the grounds of Barboursville, the home of James Barbour, a 19th-century governor of Virginia, built between 1814 and 1822 to a design by Thomas Jefferson, according to The New York Times and The Washington Post. Its winemaker Luca Paschina arrived after the 1990 harvest and made the red blend Octagon, named for Jefferson’s octagonal plans, its flagship. On 2 March 2026 the winery announced a change of ownership: the wine writer Dave McIntyre reported that an investor group of Americans, not named, was taking over, with Paschina staying as president and chief executive.

The sale came at a turning point for the parent. il Nord Est reported in April 2026 that Zonin1821 had applied for Italy’s composizione negoziata, a voluntary out-of-court procedure for negotiating with creditors while trading continues, and had appointed Maurizio Rossetti as chief executive; WineNews reported in July 2026 that the Italian estates could be sold one by one, while the company said its Gambellara headquarters was not part of any sale.

The name needs a little care online. The company’s site is zonin1821.com, and Zonin is also a surname shared by unrelated people, among them a Soviet football coach.

For a design guide, Zonin shows how a family can turn a date into a brand: 1821 sits in the company name, on a Prosecco range and on the American importer, tying a modern sparkling-wine business to a hillside in Gambellara. Compare Bolla, the Veronese house from Soave, and Santa Margherita, another Veneto wine group. For this guide we use anniversary gold, bottle green and teal with a high-contrast serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
