Easter 1988

Two thousand eggs in three days.

Cacau Show began with an Easter order. Portuguese Wikipedia, citing Veja in 2008 and later business profiles, dates the company to 6 April 1988, three days before Easter, and names its founder as Alexandre Tadeu da Costa, then 17, who was reselling chocolate Easter eggs in São Paulo. He took an order for 2,000 eggs of 50 grams, the story goes, then found that his supplier could not make eggs that small; to keep his word he bought the ingredients, hired a woman who made chocolate at home, and delivered the order three days later.

The start-up money is told two ways. Portuguese Wikipedia says the profit from that first order, roughly US$500, became the company’s starting capital; English Wikipedia says Costa borrowed US$500 from a relative to buy ingredients and moulds. Both agree on the place: a room in the family’s business premises in Casa Verde, a district in the north of São Paulo.

English Wikipedia says the business began with door-to-door catalogue sales. Its first shop, Portuguese Wikipedia says, opened at the end of 2001 in Piracicaba, in the interior of São Paulo state; a year later there were 18 branded points of sale, and the count kept climbing through franchising. The operating company is named in Portuguese Wikipedia as IBAC – Indústria Brasileira de Alimentos e Chocolates. It is privately held, and Veja described Costa as the brand’s owner in 2008; we found no outside shareholder named in the sources we checked.

Shops, a factory and a farm.

Cacau Show’s scale is the core of its story. In 2008, according to both English and Portuguese Wikipedia, it overtook the American Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory to become the largest chain of chocolate shops in the world by number of stores; the English article is flagged for unreliable sourcing, so we give the claim as Wikipedia’s. Valor Econômico reported in January 2023 that the company had 3,770 shops, had raised production by 26% and had turned over about R$4 billion in 2022; its own 2022 sustainability report gives R$4.02 billion.

Its main factory is at Itapevi, in greater São Paulo. Portuguese Wikipedia says it was installed in 2006 on 18,000 square metres and, citing Exame, that an expansion would double it to 36,000. The same article lists five factories — Campos do Jordão, Curitiba, Itapevi, Linhares and São Paulo — though a Wikipedia editor notes that the Curitiba plant could not be found in the company’s sustainability reports. A fire struck the Linhares factory, in Espírito Santo, on 7 November 2023, G1 reported. In October 2023 InfoMoney reported that Cacau Show had bought the former factory of Chocolates Pan.

Cocoa is part of the brand too. The company says it grows Trinitário cocoa at Fazenda Dedo de Deus, its farm at Linhares, where the beans are harvested, fermented and dried, and that a bean-to-bar unit at its Itapevi MegaStore turns that cocoa into its Bendito Cacao chocolate. It calls the farm one of Brazil’s most modern agricultural properties, a claim we give as its own. The farm page does not say where the bulk of the cocoa in its everyday range comes from, and we found no figure for it.

The franchise model has been recognised by its own trade. Portuguese Wikipedia says Cacau Show was named Best Franchise of the Year in its category in 2005, in an award run by Editora Globo with the Fundação Getulio Vargas; Costa won EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year prize in Brazil in 2011, according to an archived EY page; and in October 2013 the World Retail Awards named Cacau Show Emerging Market Retailer of the Year, the trade site Europe Real Estate reported.

Design and documentation.

The seven brands in this group all sell chocolate, and they come from three countries: Royce’, Meiji and Morinaga from Japan, Garoto, Cacau Show and Kopenhagen from Brazil, and Ibarra from Mexico. Each guide looks at one name on its own terms, at home first and abroad second.

Chocolate brands reach people in different ways, and the differences show in their design. A mass-market confectioner sells bars and boxes through supermarkets and corner shops, where a wrapper has a moment to be recognised on a crowded shelf. A gift brand sells mainly through its own shops and counters, where the box, the ribbon and the shop itself carry much of the identity. A maker of a traditional product — a tablet bought for the kitchen rather than as a treat — may keep the same carton for decades, so that the package itself becomes the brand. Many firms do more than one of these things at once.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — who founded it, who owns it now, where its cocoa comes from and where its chocolate is made — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Cacau Show

From chocolate shop to theme park.

In the 2020s Cacau Show pushed its brand beyond the shop. In 2021 it opened the Bendito Cacao Resort & Spa at Campos do Jordão, in the Serra da Mantiqueira, Folha de S.Paulo and Veja São Paulo reported; its website now also lists a Bendito Family Resort at Águas de Lindóia. On 20 February 2024 it announced the purchase of the Playcenter group, the São Paulo amusement-park business, without disclosing a price and subject to approval by CADE, Brazil’s competition authority, O Globo reported; and on 2 December 2024 a Cacau Park theme park at Itu was made official at a ceremony at the São Paulo state government’s palace, g1 reported. It has also sponsored television baking contests such as MasterChef Brasil and Bake Off Brasil.

Its name has been fought over in court as well as on the high street. In July 2024 Pequenas Empresas & Grandes Negócios reported that AllShow, a company in the Cacau Show group, had won a first-instance ruling in a four-year case against Kopenhagen’s registration of the name “Língua de Gato” for cat’s-tongue chocolates: a federal judge in Rio de Janeiro found on 1 July 2024 that the term describes the product. The dispute began, the magazine said, when Cacau Show planned a panettone described as milk chocolate in a cat’s-tongue shape; its own cat’s-tongue chocolate is sold as Miau. Kopenhagen’s owner said it would appeal.

The factory is part of the show. A photograph of the Itapevi headquarters and factory in Portuguese Wikipedia shows a large mural by the Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra, and Guia Folha reported in December 2023 on a spinning roller coaster in the MegaStore there. We found no published brand guidelines, and no official colour values.

For a design guide, Cacau Show shows how a chocolate brand built on reach — shops in about a thousand Brazilian municipalities, Portuguese Wikipedia says — can stretch into hotels and parks while keeping one name. Compare Kopenhagen, the older São Paulo chocolatier it has faced in court, and Dengo, a São Paulo chocolate brand built around Brazilian cocoa. For this guide we use cocoa brown, foil gold and cream with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
