Schmidt’s cellars, Dreher’s name

A Munich-trained brewer, a rock cellar and a Viennese buyer.

Dreher counts its age from 1854, but the brewery was not founded by a Dreher. English and Hungarian Wikipedia both say that in 1854 Péter Schmidt, a Pest brewer who had trained in Munich, brewed the first “Kőbányai Ser” and set up the Kőbányai Serfőző Társaság, the Kőbánya Brewing Company. Kőbánya, then on the edge of Pest and now Budapest’s tenth district, had stone cellars where beer could be kept cool, and English Wikipedia says Schmidt stored his beer in a rock cellar there. The company still dates itself from that year: it opened its brewing museum in 1979 for its 125th anniversary, Hungarian Wikipedia says, and Asahi wrote in 2023 that the brewery would mark its 170th anniversary in 2024.

The name came from Vienna. Anton Dreher ran the family brewery at Klein-Schwechat, outside Vienna, and is credited by English Wikipedia, citing a history of Vienna lager, with introducing Schwechater Lagerbier in 1840–41, a bottom-fermented beer that became the model for the Vienna lager style. Schmidt’s Kőbánya beer was competition, and in 1862 Dreher bought the Kőbánya brewery; Hungarian Wikipedia says he did so to remove a rival. The family’s first Kőbánya plant, later called Dreher Antal Serfőzdéi Rt., was built in 1863 on a site around today’s Ihász utca.

His son, also Anton Dreher, took over the business in 1870. Under him, both Wikipedias say, Kőbánya became Hungary’s largest brewery; Hungarian Wikipedia says the family’s four breweries — Schwechat, Kőbánya, Trieste and Michelob in Bohemia — were together producing 1.2 million hectolitres by 1890. The architect Frigyes Feszl, designer of Pest’s Vigadó concert hall, worked as the factory’s architect until 1884 and designed its 140-metre stable block in 1874–75 in a Romantic industrial style, Hungarian Wikipedia says.

A family combine, nationalisation and a revived name.

The Hungarian business was later run by the younger Anton’s son Jenő Dreher. Hungarian Wikipedia says it became a joint-stock company in 1905 and was made independent of the Austrian parent in 1907. Jenő Dreher then bought into his rivals — the Haggenmacher breweries of Kőbánya and Budafok, the Barber and Klusemann brewery and the Első Magyar Részvény Serfőzde, the First Hungarian Joint-Stock Brewery — and in 1928 the combine absorbed the royal brewery of Kanizsa. The resulting Dreher–Haggenmacher company held around 70% of the Hungarian beer market, according to both Wikipedias, which date its formation to 1928 and 1933 respectively.

That ended with communism. In 1948 the company was nationalised, and Hungarian Wikipedia, citing the newspaper Népszabadság in 1988, says Dreher beer was no longer brewed, because the rights-holders had left the country and taken the recipe with them. The state brewing industry went through a series of reorganisations, and by the early 1980s an independent Kőbányai Sörgyár, the Kőbánya Brewery, had been formed.

The name returned before the end of state ownership. In 1988, Hungarian Wikipedia says, again citing Népszabadság, the Kőbánya Brewery signed a contract with the Dreher rights-holders and began brewing Dreher beer again. It became a joint-stock company in 1992, and in 1993 it was bought by South African Breweries, the business daily Világgazdaság reported at the time. English Wikipedia says the company took the name Dreher Sörgyárak, Dreher Breweries, in 1997.

The modern brewery does not stand on the original Dreher site. Hungarian Wikipedia says it works in the restored buildings of the former Első Magyar Részvény Serfőzde, a brewery of 1867 that had been the Kőbánya Brewery’s second plant under socialism, on the street now named Dreher Antal út.

The seven brands in this group all make food or drink, and all of them come from Hungary: Szamos, Tibi, Sport, Dreher, Borsodi, Unicum and Pöttyös. Hungarian food and drink brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family firms that still carry a founder’s surname to names that now belong to much larger food or drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a supermarket shelf.

A food or drink brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single product than by a pack, a name and the treat or the drink it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its factory or grown far beyond the town where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its products are actually made and packed.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Dreher

From South African Breweries to Asahi.

Dreher has changed hands twice through mergers between global brewers. South African Breweries combined with the Miller Brewing Company in 2002 to form SABMiller, and the Budapest brewery became part of that group. When Anheuser-Busch InBev took over SABMiller in 2016, it agreed to sell SABMiller’s businesses in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Romania to meet European competition rules, and on 13 December 2016 Japan’s Asahi announced that it would buy them, Index, Fortune and the Financial Times reported that day. Alongside Dreher the deal took in Pilsner Urquell, Tyskie and Lech. Hungarian Wikipedia says the purchase closed in the first quarter of 2017, and Dreher Sörgyárak now belongs to Asahi Europe & International.

The company calls itself one of Hungary’s leading beer makers and still brews in Kőbánya. Its own Hungarian brands are Dreher, Arany Ászok and Kőbányai, and it also sells Asahi Super Dry, Kozel, Pilsner Urquell, Peroni and Hofbräu, the company says. Within the Dreher range, Hungarian Wikipedia says the main lager has been called Dreher Gold since 2019, having previously been sold as Dreher Classic, and lists a darker Dreher Bak alongside pale ales and dry-hopped beers. Asahi began bringing its own Japanese beer to Hungary through Dreher in 2018, Index reported.

The owner has also invested in the old brewery town. In October 2023 Asahi Europe & International described a long-term investment programme at Kőbánya, beginning with a new can line installed that spring; Dreher’s chief executive, Gábor Békefi, called it the largest investment yet made in the Hungarian beer industry. The company’s beer museum, the Söripari Emléktár, opened in 1979 and was renovated for its fortieth anniversary in 2019, Hungarian Wikipedia says, and in 2019 the company published a history of the Dreher family and its brewery under the title Drehertől Dreherig, “From Dreher to Dreher.”

For a design guide, Dreher shows how a family name from the first age of lager survived nationalisation, a decades-long gap and two global owners to become a brewery’s identity again. Compare Borsodi, another of Hungary’s big lager brewers, and Unicum, the Budapest herbal liqueur. For this guide we use lager gold, cellar navy and brick copper with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
