Heidsieck & Cie

A draper, a queen and a second name.

Piper-Heidsieck dates itself to 1785, when Florens-Louis Heidsieck founded a trading house in Reims. English Wikipedia describes him as a draper, born in 1749, the son of a Protestant pastor from Westphalia, and says his firm, Heidsieck & Cie, dealt in both cloth and Champagne wines. The house says the same in its own words: “When Florens-Louis Heidsieck founded Piper-Heidsieck in 1785,” its site begins, before describing “240 years of daring stories.” Both English and French Wikipedia repeat the house tradition that he presented his wine to Queen Marie-Antoinette, with the ambition of making a cuvée “worthy of a queen.”

The second half of the name arrived a generation later. After Florens-Louis, in 1828, his nephew Christian Heidsieck worked alongside Henri-Guillaume Piper, who looked after the commercial side, according to both Wikipedias. In 1838 Christian’s widow married Piper; that is when the name Piper-Heidsieck was born, English Wikipedia says. The house was later credited as supplier to fourteen royal or imperial courts, by English Wikipedia’s count.

The Heidsieck name did not stay with one house. English Wikipedia says Florens-Louis was succeeded by three nephews and that the line which became Heidsieck & Co Monopole, now part of the Lanson-BCC group, went its own way from 1838; a further house, Charles Heidsieck, was founded in 1851 by Charles-Camille Heidsieck, whose father was a nephew of Florens-Louis. Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck have since come under the same owner, but they remain separate houses with separate labels.

In 1870 the business passed to Jacques-Charles Théodore Kunkelmann, a partner since 1851, and in 1892 to his son Ferdinand-Théodore, Wikipedia says. In 1926 Ferdinand-Théodore’s daughter Yolande married the Marquis Jean de Suarez d’Aulan, an aviation pioneer who promoted the house by flying around the world.

From the d’Aulan family to the Descours.

Yolande d’Aulan rebuilt the house after the Second World War, and her eldest son, François d’Aulan, took over in 1957 and led it for 33 years, both Wikipedias say. In 1988 control passed to the Hériard-Dubreuil family, owners of the cognac and spirits group Rémy Cointreau, under which the house sat for more than two decades; Tom Stevenson’s Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne & Sparkling Wine of 1999 is cited for the Rémy ownership.

On 8 July 2011 the French investment group EPI, short for Entreprise Patrimoniale d’Investissements and controlled by the Descours family, bought Piper-Heidsieck together with Charles Heidsieck, as Le Monde and WineAlley reported that year. Christopher Descours leads the company, according to English Wikipedia.

The house has invested in Reims. A vat room with more than 200 vats opened in 1995, and in 2008 the architect Jacques Ferrier designed new headquarters in the city, with a metallic, mesh-like façade inspired by Champagne bubbles, as Les Échos reported at the time. English Wikipedia puts the house’s own vineyards at more than 65 hectares and says it buys grapes from about 240 partner growers across more than 110 crus.

Winemaking passed from Régis Camus, cellar master from 2002 for sixteen years, to Émilien Boutillat in 2018, whom English Wikipedia calls the youngest cellar master of a major Champagne house, at 31. The company credits Boutillat with leading its push for B Corp certification, which the house obtained in July 2022, Terre de Vins reported. Piper-Heidsieck describes its aim as “seriously crafting wines that smile.”

Couture, cinema and a red corset.

The seven brands in this group are all champagne houses: Taittinger, Laurent-Perrier, Krug, Mumm, Lanson, Piper-Heidsieck and Ruinart. Champagne houses in general sit at many different points in the trade, from firms that still carry a founding family’s name to names that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single house can be sold everywhere from a wine merchant to a supermarket shelf.

A champagne house’s identity is usually carried less by a single wine than by a label, a name and the occasion its bottles promise, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, bought or sold vineyards or grown far beyond the cellars where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its wines are actually made and aged.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the house says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its wines are made and how its labels and packaging have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the house’s own word.

Piper-Heidsieck

A bottle dressed for the screen.

Fashion has dressed the bottle more than once. In 1999 Jean Paul Gaultier dressed the Piper-Heidsieck bottle in a red corset and fishnet stocking for a limited edition, and he returned with a second corset edition in 2011, Le Figaro Vin reported. Viktor & Rolf worked with the house in 2007, and in 2009 Christian Louboutin designed “Le Rituel,” a piece Vogue France covered that October.

The cinema link is older. English Wikipedia says Piper-Heidsieck was the first Champagne brand to appear on screen, in Laurel and Hardy’s Sons of the Desert of 1933. In 1953 Marilyn Monroe spoke warmly of the brand in a press interview, according to Le Point in 2013 and Forbes France in 2017. The house was official supplier of the Cannes Film Festival from 1993 to 2020 and of the Oscars from 2015 to 2020, and has been a patron of the Cinémathèque française since 2008, helping to fund the digital restoration of Luis Buñuel’s L’Âge d’or, English Wikipedia says. More recent partnerships are in sport: the Australian Open since 2019 and the Ballon d’Or since 2021.

The range centres on the non-vintage Cuvée Brut, which English Wikipedia calls the house’s signature, alongside the Essentiel extra brut wines, Rosé Sauvage and vintage releases. This site also has a separate article on the lettering, What Font Does Piper-Heidsieck Use?

For a design guide, Piper-Heidsieck shows how a wine label can borrow the language of couture and the red carpet without losing its 1785 founding story. Compare Lanson, a fellow Reims house with an eighteenth-century date, and Taittinger, also of Reims. For this guide we use red, claret and ivory with a high-contrast serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
