A brewer’s cider

From a four-state test to the best-selling cider in America.

Angry Orchard is a hard cider brand owned by the Boston Beer Company, the Boston brewer best known for Samuel Adams. English Wikipedia describes it as a cider company near Walden, New York, with apples from its own orchard of about 60 acres in the Hudson Valley, citing the brand’s own site.

The cider began small. English Wikipedia, citing a January 2012 report in the Beer Street Journal, says that in its first year Angry Orchard was sold only in New England, Colorado, Maryland and New York, and that it launched across the United States in April 2012 with three flavours: Crisp Apple, Traditional Dry and Apple Ginger. The drinks writer John Holl, writing in All About Beer in November 2015, also dated the brand’s launch to 2012.

Growth was quick. The trade site beveragedaily.com reported in July 2013 that Angry Orchard had overtaken Woodchuck as the best-selling cider in the United States, a story framed around the effect on Woodchuck’s Irish owner at the time, C&C Group. English Wikipedia, citing Good Beer Hunting in October 2021, says Angry Orchard held about half of the US cider market in 2021, down from about 60 per cent in 2016, and that the brand is credited with making cider widely available in American restaurants and retail chains, which in turn helped regional cideries find a market.

The name is meant to describe the fruit rather than the mood. VinePair explained in February 2021 that “angry” alludes to cider apples, which tend to look ugly next to eating apples and taste sharply acidic and tannic.

For its first years the brand had no orchard of its own. That changed in 2014, when Boston Beer bought a historic apple farm in the Hudson Valley; the trade site Brewbound reported the purchase that year, placing the 60-acre orchard in the neighbouring town of Montgomery, while the company’s announcement put it in Walden. John Holl reported in All About Beer in November 2015 that the farm dates back to the 1700s, became a full-time apple orchard by the 1950s and has about 45 working acres, some with trees around a century old growing culinary apples such as McIntosh and Rome.

Building began in March 2015, and the Angry Orchard & Innovation Cider House welcomed its first visitors in early November 2015, Holl reported, with more than 2,500 people coming through in the first stretch. Holl described it as a place for experiments and small batches under head cider maker Ryan Burk, who planned to add historic and cider-specific apple varieties slowly, a few acres at a time. The same article noted that the main Angry Orchard ciders were still produced at Boston Beer’s facility in Ohio, which separates the brand’s visitor home from the place most of its cider was then made.

The orchard soon became a stage. In 2016 the treehouse builder Pete Nelson built a treehouse tasting room at the cider house for Animal Planet’s Treehouse Masters, Chilled Magazine reported in July 2016. In March 2019 the brand launched what a PR Newswire release called a first-of-its-kind augmented-reality app for cider and food pairing, guided by Burk; by then the core range, English Wikipedia says, was Crisp Apple, Rosé, Easy Apple and Pear.

The brand has had one notable product recall. On 4 August 2015, according to a notice published by the US Food and Drug Administration, Angry Orchard voluntarily recalled select cases of Crisp Apple over concerns about refermentation in the bottle, after consumer reports of broken or overflowing bottles.

Design and documentation.

The seven brands in this group are all cider and spirits names: Westons, Aspall, Angry Orchard, Moutai, Wuliangye, Kavalan and Amrut. Cider and spirits brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family houses that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a bar list.

A cider or spirits brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its cider or spirit is actually made and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its cider or spirit is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Angry Orchard

A cider inside a beer company.

Angry Orchard sits inside a company that was built on beer. English Wikipedia says the Boston Beer Company was co-founded in 1984 by Jim Koch, and its Samuel Adams Boston Lager is the company’s best-known beer. The cider grew fast inside that business: English Wikipedia, citing the magazine Boston in January 2015, says Angry Orchard came to account for about a fifth of the company’s output.

That success also shaped how the wider American cider category developed. Good Beer Hunting argued in October 2021 that Angry Orchard’s later decline in share created opportunities for regional hard cider makers. In Walden, the cider house opened in 2015 with tours and a tasting room where experimental batches were poured, John Holl reported in All About Beer.

The name needs a little care online. Angry Orchard is a brand, not a place; the orchard and cider house are in Walden, Orange County, New York, and the brand’s own site is angryorchard.com. For a look at the lettering on its packs, see our separate note on the Angry Orchard font.

For a design guide, Angry Orchard shows how a brewer can build a separate cider brand around a single idea, a working orchard with its own address, and carry it from a four-state test to national shelves in a year. Compare Samuel Adams, the lager from the same company, and Westons Cider, the Herefordshire cider maker. For this guide we use orchard red, bark brown and cider gold with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
