A House Founded in a Crisis

A Geneva manager starts his own name.

RAYMOND WEIL was founded in Geneva in 1976. English and French Wikipedia both name two founders, Raymond Weil and Simone Bédat, and French Wikipedia stresses the timing: the company began in the middle of the crisis that shook Swiss watchmaking in the 1970s. The founder was born in Geneva in 1926, French Wikipedia says, joined the watch company Camy Watch in 1949 after commercial studies, and spent 26 years there, rising to a director’s post, before he set up on his own.

The new company built its own distribution, first in Europe. German and French Wikipedia both say it began in the United Kingdom and then widened in the 1980s to the United Arab Emirates, the United States and India.

The partnership changed in the 1990s. English Wikipedia says Simone Bédat and her son left the company in 1996 to found Bedat & Co. The same year, French Wikipedia says, the founder’s son-in-law Olivier Bernheim, who had joined in 1982 after years in marketing at Heineken and Unilever, became president and chief executive. He set up a research and development department in 1999. English Wikipedia says Raymond Weil led the company until he retired in 2002.

The third generation joined in 2006, when Olivier Bernheim’s sons Elie and Pierre came into the business. Elie Bernheim became chief executive in 2014, according to English Wikipedia and the Swiss financial site finews.ch, which interviewed him in April 2024 and described the company as family-run. He told finews.ch that independence from the pressures of the stock market lets the company think long term, and that as the third in line he wants to make sure there is a fourth.

Opera titles, dancers and a postal code.

Music is the thread that runs through the brand. French Wikipedia dates the first link to 1983, when the company launched its Amadeus line and advertising alongside Miloš Forman’s film of the same name, and says that from then on almost every collection took its name from music. The list includes Othello, an ultra-thin model of 1986 that French Wikipedia says was decisive for the brand abroad, Traviata in 1988, Nabucco and Freelancer in 2007, and Maestro in 2010. finews.ch cites Tango, Toccata and Maestro as examples of the family’s long enthusiasm for the fine arts.

The advertising followed the same theme. French Wikipedia says the “Precision Movements” campaign of 1994, directed by John Booth with photographs by Lois Greenfield, showed dancers suspended in mid-air and won a London International Advertising Award in 1995. It says a 2007 identity refresh came with the signature “Independence is a state of mind,” and that the 2011 campaign “Precision is my Inspiration” was filmed at the Victoria Hall in Geneva. German Wikipedia says the brand became Official Timing Partner of the Royal Albert Hall in London in July 2013.

Licensed music editions became a recurring format. WorldTempus reported in October 2017 on a Freelancer David Bowie, made with the David Bowie Estate in a numbered series of 3,000, with a lightning bolt from the Aladdin Sane cover at twelve o’clock, a logo from the Diamond Dogs cover at six and a 1974 portrait by the photographer Terry O’Neill on the caseback. The company’s Art & Music Icons pages also list editions with The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and AC/DC.

Movements are the other strand of the story. In March 2017, WorldTempus reported that the brand had presented Calibre RW1212 at Baselworld as its first in-house movement, designed by its own research and development department and produced by Sellita. The name, WorldTempus said, is a nod to the postal code of the company’s headquarters in Grand-Lancy, on the edge of Geneva. Its signature is a regulating organ shown on the dial side at six o’clock, and it first appeared in a 42.5 mm Freelancer.

Design and documentation.

Watch makers sell objects small enough to hide in a closed hand, so their pictures work at a different scale from the product. The usual image is a macro shot: a dial filling the frame, with the printing, the applied markers and the texture of the surface all larger than life. Brushed and polished steel is lit so that the two finishes separate, and a crystal is angled so that the eye sees through it rather than a reflection on it.

A second set of pictures moves to the bench. A watchmaker’s loupe, a pair of tweezers and an open movement on a work mat are the trade’s shorthand for skill, and they appear in catalogues whether a brand makes many of its own parts or few. Those images show a craft; they do not by themselves show where a particular watch was made, which is why this guide keeps what a company says apart from what independent sources record.

Close-ups do the rest of the work. A chronograph’s pushers suggest timing and motorsport, a screw-down crown suggests water, and enamel and sapphire suggest depth and permanence.

The public stage has long been the fair. Geneva hosts the trade’s big gatherings, where stands are built like small buildings and new models sit behind glass under careful light. Around that stage sit the other habits of the category: archive reissues, anniversary editions, and timekeeping partnerships in sport. Each one gives a brand a story to tell about time, and each one depends on a record that can be checked.

RAYMOND WEIL

Neo-vintage at fifty.

The most important recent design is the Millesime. At the 2023 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, the Millesime automatic small seconds won the Challenge prize, a result that a press release carried by Europa Star in April 2024 called the brand’s most important award in its nearly fifty-year history. The same release presented Millesime as the flagship collection at Watches and Wonders 2024, with eleven new references. It describes 39.5 mm steel cases and a sector dial, and says the small seconds at six o’clock echoes a compass. finews.ch reported that 2024 was the brand’s first appearance at Watches and Wonders in Geneva, after years at Baselworld, and that the company describes the line as “neo-vintage,” a blend of traditional watch codes with a contemporary frame.

The company is still independent and still based in Geneva. Its website presents “Swiss Luxury Watches, since 1976” from an independent Geneva Maison with a lasting passion for the arts, and arranges the current range into four collections: Freelancer, Millesime, A.R.T. and Toccata. Elie Bernheim told finews.ch that the company makes about 80,000 watches a year.

The fiftieth anniversary in 2026 turned the archive into product. Hypebeast reported on 1 April 2026 that the brand had marked its fifth decade with “The Fifty,” a Millesime limited to 50 pieces, with a 37 mm steel case, a white gold bezel, a dial built from four separate parts and a restored, hand-decorated Valjoux 23-6 chronograph movement dating from 1976, the founding year. Its caseback is engraved with 1976 and 2026.

The name needs one caution: Bedat & Co is a separate company, founded by the co-founder after she left.

For a design guide, RAYMOND WEIL shows how a family company can borrow its vocabulary from another art form and keep it for decades, from opera titles to album covers. Compare Vacheron Constantin, another Geneva watch house, and Audemars Piguet, another Swiss maker that makes much of its independence. For this guide we use a lake slate and a salmon dial tone with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
