The Carlyle salon
A bridal shop before it was a label.
The Vera Wang label began as a shop. An Associated Press report published in October 1990 said Vera Wang Bridal House Ltd. had opened that late summer at the Carlyle Hotel on upper Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The salon sat on two levels joined by a carpeted staircase, with sample gowns on racks against back-lit walls and triple mirrors in the dressing rooms.
The first stock was not all her own. The AP listed gowns by Carolina Herrera, Arnold Scaasi and Guy Laroche, as well as Priscilla of Boston, among about 150 kept in the salon at any one time, alongside “the ability to do dresses from scratch, custom-designed in our own workrooms,” as Wang put it. Seamstresses worked on the premises, and the first floor sold little black dresses and other party clothes. Today’s company describes the opening as introducing fashion to the bridal industry.
Wang came to retail from magazines. She worked at Vogue for 17 years, English Wikipedia says, and the AP called her a former senior fashion editor there; the company says “nearly two decades.” She then spent two years at Ralph Lauren, where the AP described her as design director for women’s accessories. Before fashion she competed as a figure skater, and she appeared at the 1968 US championships, English Wikipedia records.
The label then widened beyond the salon. The company says it created a made-to-order couture collection for VIP and celebrity clients in 1991, and launched ready-to-wear in 2000. Wang’s book Vera Wang on Weddings was published by HarperCollins in 2001, and the company’s timeline adds its first fragrance in 2002 and home fashion with Wedgwood in 2003. English Wikipedia gives 2002 for the china and crystal, so the sources differ by a year.
Colour
Minimalism, layering and a skating link.
The company describes its ready-to-wear in terms of “sophisticated minimalism, signature layering, and intentional attention to detail,” and calls its approach to style and luxury “nonchalant.”
The label’s work has also reached the ice. English Wikipedia lists skaters who wore Wang’s costumes at the Winter Olympics, including Nancy Kerrigan in 1992 and 1994, Michelle Kwan in 1998 and 2002, and Nathan Chen in 2018 and 2022. She entered the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2009 for that work, the same article says.
Industry recognition is well documented. The Council of Fashion Designers of America named Wang Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2005 and gave her its lifetime achievement award in 2013. The CFDA also records a Board of Directors’ Tribute in 2023 for her impact on bridal. The company’s timeline adds France’s Legion of Honor in 2017 and lists the US National Medal of Arts under 2021. The label marked its 30th anniversary with a New York Fashion Week runway show in September 2019.
Much of the brand’s reach has come from licences, and that matters for anyone reading the name on a product. Coty took on the fragrances in 2005 when it bought Unilever’s prestige fragrance business, English Wikipedia says. Simply Vera, a lower-priced clothing line, reached Kohl’s department stores in 2007 under a deal struck in 2006. The company’s timeline also lists diamond jewellery with Zales from 2011, and rental tuxedos for Men’s Wearhouse from 2012. Its current website lists Vera Wang Haute, the David’s Bridal line, Simply Vera and a European collection as separate ranges.
Who makes each line therefore differs. The 2025 announcement with David’s Bridal says Vera Wang continues to design and produce its namesake haute couture. David’s Bridal produces Vera Wang Bride, and the Batra Group’s London-based luxury division handles development, production and distribution of the European ready-to-wear line, according to WHP Global.
Typography
How bridal houses present themselves.
Bridal houses sell a single garment that most customers will wear once, and their images tend to reflect that. The dress usually comes first, shown whole on a stand or a model, with the room, the light and the type kept quiet around it. Pages often stay pale and uncluttered, so that white, ivory and blush can be told apart.
Close-ups do much of the remaining work. Lace, tulle, beading and hand finishing are hard to read at full length, so lookbooks and websites move in on a sleeve, a hem or a bodice seam. These details carry the claims about workmanship, and they give a designer’s pattern or a house’s lace a recognisable surface.
The runway calendar sets the rhythm. New York Bridal Fashion Week and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week give houses a fixed moment to show a season, and many present a named collection with its own theme, set and printed material. The show then feeds the photography, film and social posts that follow it through the year. Backstage pictures, fittings and the walk down the runway all give a house more ways to show how a gown moves.
The shop is the other stage. Showroom mirrors, fitting platforms, soft seating and rails of samples are all part of how a label appears to a bride, and a garment bag or printed lookbook may be the piece of the brand that she takes home. For a designer, that makes the category a useful study in restraint: a small set of tones, a quiet typeface and careful photography, repeated from the catalogue to the fitting room.

Vera Wang
A designer’s name under new ownership.
Bridal has moved between partners several times. In 2010, Daily Front Row reported, Wang signed an exclusive licence with David’s Bridal for White by Vera Wang, a line that English Wikipedia says launched in February 2011. The partnership ended in 2020. In April 2021 she signed a ten-year licence with Barcelona’s Pronovias group, which took on making, distributing and selling Vera Wang Bride, FashionUnited reported.
Ownership of the name changed next. On 16 December 2024 the CFDA reported that WHP Global, a brand management firm based in New York, was acquiring the intellectual property of the Vera Wang brand. Wang stayed as founder and chief creative officer and joined WHP Global as a shareholder. The company’s timeline places the move in 2025, when it says the label joined the WHP Global family of brands. The label keeps trading, with its intellectual property held by WHP Global.
A 2025 licence with the Batra Group brought an advanced contemporary ready-to-wear line for women to Britain and Europe, with a men’s line to follow; WHP Global called it the first major licensing deal since the purchase, and Wang said the brand had never before offered product at that price point. The autumn/winter 2026 collection of tailoring, knitwear, jersey and outerwear was shown in private appointments in Paris in January 2026, FashionUnited and TheIndustry.fashion reported. WHP Global described geographic expansion, media and hospitality as the pillars of its long-term plan for the brand.
Bridal then returned to its earlier partner. On 12 September 2025 David’s Bridal and WHP Global named David’s the global producer and retailer of Vera Wang Bride, covering gowns and bridesmaid dresses, with stationery to follow, and sold exclusively there. Daily Front Row reported that the first collection premiered on the David’s Bridal website on 7 April 2026, with sales from June, and that the label had moved from Pronovias for the rest of its ten-year contract.
For a design guide, Vera Wang shows how a personal name can carry many tiers of product, from couture to department-store clothing, while each is made by a different partner. Compare Pronovias and Monique Lhuillier. For this guide we use graphite, pale stone and a muted rose with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
