Six Gowns and a Booth

A bridal line that began at a trade show.

Monique Lhuillier is a Los Angeles fashion house that began with wedding gowns. The company says it was established in 1996 by Monique Lhuillier and Tom Bugbee, and CNN, Rizzoli and the Gale biography series Newsmakers all give 1996 for the launch. Lhuillier grew up in Cebu in the Philippines, and Newsmakers, in its 2007 entry, says she boarded at Chateau Mont-Choisi in Lausanne before graduating from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles in 1995. It adds that her final project had a bridal theme and that her first job was with Melivier, a sportswear maker.

The idea came from the market itself. Lhuillier told the Gulf Times in June 2016 that, looking for a wedding dress that felt timeless and romantic with a modern twist, she found the selection limited and “realised there was a void in the marketplace I could fill.” She told InStyle, as quoted by Newsmakers, that the sleeves on offer were too big and the bodices “too junked up with beads.”

The launch itself was small. Newsmakers says she made six bridal gowns and several bridesmaids’ dresses in about a month and showed them from a rented booth at a bridal trade show, signing five stores as her first accounts. She told CNN in 2012 the same story: a local trade show, “a little booth,” and five stores ordering. “We drove home and I realized that I actually had to make everything,” she said. Bugbee left work as a retail consultant to join the business full-time, according to Newsmakers, and South Coast Plaza’s 2021 interview says he serves as chief executive.

Growth took time. “We were not an overnight success,” Lhuillier said in that November 2021 interview, explaining that the company had no access to PR, marketing or funding and did much of the work itself. After four years, she said, people began to say her name correctly. Newsmakers gives the pronunciation as LOO-lee-ay. On ownership, she said the challenge was “keeping it owned by us,” she said, “because we never took outside money.” Her first retail store opened in Beverly Hills in 2001, a date given by both Newsmakers and Lhuillier herself.

Colour

From bridal to the red carpet.

Evening wear was the second line. Newsmakers says a side eveningwear division followed within a few years, with Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus placing orders from the start. Lhuillier’s own account in 2021 credits Los Angeles stylists, who asked whether a dress could be made in a colour so that it could go on the red carpet. She said she showed at New York Fashion Week for many years, and that helped place the house in American fashion.

The year that Newsmakers singles out is 2004. At the Emmy Awards that September, several actors wore her gowns, among them Jamie-Lynn DiScala and Megan Mullally. Weeks later, photographs showed that the dress Britney Spears wore at her wedding was a Lhuillier design, made under a confidentiality agreement, with the staff working overtime when the date moved up by four weeks. Spears, she told the Star Tribune, came up with the gloves and the beaded neckpiece.

Later dates come from Lhuillier herself. She told South Coast Plaza that in 2019 she dressed eight women for the Golden Globes red carpet, a number she called a record, and that she had expected only two. Rizzoli’s description of her book names Emma Stone, Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon and Michelle Obama among her fans, and Witherspoon wrote its foreword. Monique Lhuillier: Dreaming of Fashion and Glamour was published on 28 September 2021 as the house marked 25 years, alongside an anniversary dress made in a limited run of 25.

“On special occasions women should shine from within,” she told InStyle in 2004. “Their glamour should be clean.” In 2021 she called the aesthetic “feminine and glamorous, but with a modern twist,” and South Coast Plaza listed its signatures as every hue of pink, fresh versions of lace, and convertible dresses with detachable sleeves or capes. The pink has a documented bridal side. She told CNN in 2012 that she had pushed blush for two seasons as a subtle move outside white and ivory, and the company’s Pottery Barn pages now call blush a signature. In the same interview she said she produced three bridal collections a year, with ready-to-wear in between giving her a rest from whites and ivories.

Typography

How bridal houses present themselves.

Bridal houses sell a single garment that most customers will wear once, and their images tend to reflect that. The dress usually comes first, shown whole on a stand or a model, with the room, the light and the type kept quiet around it. Pages often stay pale and uncluttered, so that white, ivory and blush can be told apart.

Close-ups do much of the remaining work. Lace, tulle, beading and hand finishing are hard to read at full length, so lookbooks and websites move in on a sleeve, a hem or a bodice seam. These details carry the claims about workmanship, and they give a designer’s pattern or a house’s lace a recognisable surface.

The runway calendar sets the rhythm. New York Bridal Fashion Week and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week give houses a fixed moment to show a season, and many present a named collection with its own theme, set and printed material. The show then feeds the photography, film and social posts that follow it through the year. Backstage pictures, fittings and the walk down the runway all give a house more ways to show how a gown moves.

The shop is the other stage. Showroom mirrors, fitting platforms, soft seating and rails of samples are all part of how a label appears to a bride, and a garment bag or printed lookbook may be the piece of the brand that she takes home. For a designer, that makes the category a useful study in restraint: a small set of tones, a quiet typeface and careful photography, repeated from the catalogue to the fitting room.

Monique Lhuillier

A Los Angeles atelier and a lifestyle range.

Manufacture is one of the brand’s stated points. “My collection is made at my atelier in Los Angeles and because we produce everything in-house it allows us to use the highest quality fabrics and to oversee everything from start to finish,” Lhuillier told the Gulf Times in 2016; that is her description. CNN’s 2012 profile also referred to her atelier and to her visits to a factory.

Her industry standing is recorded with a small discrepancy. The company says she has been a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America since 2003, as does English Wikipedia; in the 2021 interview she said 2002. English Wikipedia also records a Presidential Medal of Merit from the Philippines in 2006 and her inclusion in a 2021 Philippine postage stamp series.

The retail network grew in steps. English Wikipedia dates a Los Angeles flagship on Melrose Place to 2007, and a New York store to 2012, the year CNN reported a planned New York flagship and showroom. The company’s store page now lists flagships in Los Angeles, New York, London and Costa Mesa, the last at South Coast Plaza, which called its boutique a year old in November 2021.

The name also travels on licensed goods. Newsmakers dates home furnishings, fine china and handbags to 2007. English Wikipedia says a Pottery Barn Kids line followed in 2016, and the company now lists Pottery Barn home, teen and kids collections, including a wedding registry, alongside Agraria home fragrance. Monique Lhuillier BLISS, a bridal jewellery line sold exclusively by Kay Jewelers, launched on 30 September 2021, the CFDA reported, with an “XO” signature on each piece. National Jeweler reported the addition of lab-grown diamonds in October 2023 and fashion jewellery in September 2025. South Coast Plaza also named the lower-priced ML Monique Lhuillier ready-to-wear line and lingerie made with Hanky Panky.

For a design guide, Monique Lhuillier shows how a bridal house can carry one colour from the gown to the home, with blush running from the dress to the nursery. Compare Jenny Packham, another founder-run bridal and red-carpet house, and Vera Wang, an American bridal name. For this guide we use deep rose, soft blush and a garden sage with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
