Two Founders, 1988

A label from 1988, a limited company from 1996.

Jenny Packham is a British evening and bridal label that carries the name of its designer. The Globe-Trotter journal said in October 2021 that she founded her eponymous company in 1988, designing evening and bridal wear, and the brand’s own About page gives the same year. English Wikipedia says her designs were first presented in 1988 at the London Designer Show. In November 2023 Packham told A&E Magazine that the year marked 35 years of the brand, adding that “fashion is a tough game.”

She did not start alone. New London Architecture lists Mathew Anderson as co-founder and chief executive of Jenny Packham (London) Limited, and says the label was set up in partnership with Packham in 1988. Luxury London reported in August 2022 that the pair started the business after she graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1987. The brand’s About page also names Central Saint Martins; English Wikipedia gives Southampton College of Art first, then Saint Martin’s School of Art in London.

The legal company came later. The UK company register shows Jenny Packham (London) Limited as incorporated in February 1996 under the name Zoomphase Limited, renamed that June, with Packham and Anderson as directors since May 1996. It is listed as active, and it is controlled by a private holding company whose two registered people with significant control are Packham and Anderson. The brand describes itself as an “independent British luxury fashion house.”

The early client list looked different from the later one. “We were dressing UK pop stars and TV personalities,” Packham told Luxury London, explaining that she grew frustrated and that the two founders chose to “recalibrate,” spending two years turning down people they felt they should not dress. The magazine places the result in 2011, when Sandra Bullock wore a powder-pink Jenny Packham dress to the Golden Globe Awards.

Bond, a one-off dress and a museum date.

The label’s screen work has firm dates. Packham told the Globe-Trotter journal that the first design for James Bond came in the 2002 film Die Another Day, a one-shouldered, crystal-embellished gown for Rosamund Pike, made with the costume designer Lindy Hemming, who also worked with her on Casino Royale. There, Caterina Murino wore a Jenny Packham dress. Luxury London adds work with Patricia Field on Sex and the City and an appearance in Gossip Girl.

Bond returned in 2021. For the 60th anniversary of the films, the magazine reported, Eon approached Packham, and the result was a capsule of eight evening gowns, each inspired by a dress worn in a film or by the film itself. The Globe-Trotter journal named the stores carrying it from 5 October 2021 as including Harrods, Net-a-Porter and Neiman Marcus.

One day dress drew its own coverage. On 25 July 2013 Marie Claire UK reported that the blue polka-dot crêpe de chine dress worn by the then Duchess of Cambridge on the steps of the Lindo Wing was a bespoke one-off, not available to buy, and that the Jenny Packham website crashed minutes after the appearance. English Wikipedia says Packham has designed at least eight dresses for the Princess of Wales, including one for the Olympic Gala Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2012 and the gold gown for the premiere of No Time to Die in 2021.

The year of that dress also brought a museum date. English Wikipedia and the Globe-Trotter journal both record a 2013 retrospective selection of her work in the Raphael Gallery of the V&A, marking 25 years of the label. English Wikipedia also records an honorary doctorate from Southampton Solent University in 2008.

On house style, the company’s About page names “sculptural silhouettes,” hand-beading and “glittering embellishments,” with “sharp, architectural crepes” set against silk chiffons and tulles. Luxury London called the result “Regency Glamour meets Old Hollywood meets Fairy Princess,” and reported that Marilyn Monroe was the muse for the SS15 collection. The magazine also quoted Packham saying she is not in the business of making anyone seem avant-garde. Her book How to Make a Dress appeared in 2022.

How bridal houses present themselves.

Bridal houses sell a single garment that most customers will wear once, and their images tend to reflect that. The dress usually comes first, shown whole on a stand or a model, with the room, the light and the type kept quiet around it. Pages often stay pale and uncluttered, so that white, ivory and blush can be told apart.

Close-ups do much of the remaining work. Lace, tulle, beading and hand finishing are hard to read at full length, so lookbooks and websites move in on a sleeve, a hem or a bodice seam. These details carry the claims about workmanship, and they give a designer’s pattern or a house’s lace a recognisable surface.

The runway calendar sets the rhythm. New York Bridal Fashion Week and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week give houses a fixed moment to show a season, and many present a named collection with its own theme, set and printed material. The show then feeds the photography, film and social posts that follow it through the year. Backstage pictures, fittings and the walk down the runway all give a house more ways to show how a gown moves.

The shop is the other stage. Showroom mirrors, fitting platforms, soft seating and rails of samples are all part of how a label appears to a bride, and a garment bag or printed lookbook may be the piece of the brand that she takes home. For a designer, that makes the category a useful study in restraint: a small set of tones, a quiet typeface and careful photography, repeated from the catalogue to the fitting room.

Jenny Packham

North London, Delhi and Mayfair.

Design and manufacture sit in two places. Luxury London visited Packham in 2022 at her North London studio, a whitewashed warehouse, and described Delhi as the location of her factories. In the Globe-Trotter journal she spoke of India as the place “where we create many of our designs.” The company’s ethics page describes “long-standing manufacturing partners” and says it has employed a UK-based corporate team for almost 40 years. The company register classes the business under the manufacture of women’s outerwear.

The same page sets out material rules, which are given here as the company’s statements: it says it has never used fur or exotic skins, and that it has pledged since 2023 never to use feathers. It also publishes a modern slavery statement, which says it is strengthening its due diligence and monitoring of the supply chain. Packham’s work with Ocean Rising, an initiative A&E Magazine linked to the Schmidt Ocean Institute and Nekton, gave the Resort 24 collection its deep-blue theme.

The range has widened from gowns alone. The current website sells ready-to-wear and bridal, with bridal campaigns running to Bride 2027 and a separate bridal party range. Vows Bridal, a Massachusetts gown retailer, dates bridal accessories to 2008 and a first lingerie collection to 2010. New London Architecture describes a business with wholesale and retail divisions, a number of licences, and retail franchise partners in Korea, China and Paris. Today the brand names its flagship store in London’s Mayfair and lists stockists including Harrods, Mytheresa, Neiman Marcus and Saks.

For a design guide, Jenny Packham shows how an occasion label can build its name through garments with dates attached: a Bond gown in 2002, a one-off dress in 2013 and a gold gown in 2021. Compare Monique Lhuillier, another founder-run bridal and red-carpet house, and Alexander McQueen, another British house with roots at Central Saint Martins. For this guide we use midnight plum, champagne and an antique gold with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
