Mitten Template

Print a mitten template for free. Get a left and right pair (the right mitten is the exact mirror of the left), or one hand only, with one piece per hand for a flat craft or a front and a back piece for lacing or sewing. Size the mittens from a hand size, child 2 to 4 years up to a man’s large, using the Craft Yarn Council hand chart, or type your own hand length, or simply pick a height. Tick lacing holes and the tool spaces them evenly round the mitten, never across the wrist, and tells you how many there are. Choose a pattern to decorate (stripes, a zigzag band, a snowflake or a heart) or a plain outline, and type names to print them on the cuffs. Fill the sheet for a class set. A check square shows the print is true size. Download a PDF on US Letter or A4, an SVG cut file or a PNG. No sign-up, no watermark.

Runs in your browser with our own code; names never leave your device, and nothing is saved. The mitten is our own drawing; the right mitten is its exact mirror. Lacing holes are spaced evenly round the mitten and never across the wrist. Print at 100% (Actual size) and check the square.

How to print a mitten template

  1. Choose a pair or one hand, and one or two pieces per hand.
  2. Choose the hand size (or type the hand length) or a mitten height.
  3. Optional: tick lacing holes and choose the spacing, choose a pattern, type names for the cuffs, pick a colour.
  4. Download the PDF and print at 100% (Actual size); measure the check square. There is also an SVG (true size, for Cricut, Silhouette or laser cutters) and a 300 DPI PNG, one per sheet.
  5. Cut out the mittens, punch the holes and lace them with yarn, or colour and decorate them.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are there?

Hand sizes from the Craft Yarn Council chart (child 2–4 years to man’s large), your own hand length, or a mitten height from 1.6 in up to about 10.1 in on one Letter sheet (10.5 in on A4). Larger mittens are tiled over sheets, or fit on A3 or Tabloid.

How is the mitten sized from the hand?

The hand part of the mitten, from the fingertips to the cuff, is the hand length plus 15% room, and the cuff is added below. Hand length runs from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger.

How many lacing holes are there?

It depends on the size and the spacing you pick: the tool shows the count, and the table on this page lists it for every hand size. The holes are evenly spaced, never more than the spacing apart.

Why are there front and back pieces?

For lacing or sewing a mitten closed you need two pieces per hand. The back is the mirror image of the front, so when you lay them back to back the outlines and holes line up.

Which mitten is left and which is right?

Seen from the back of the hand, the left mitten has its thumb on the right and the right mitten has its thumb on the left. Untick the labels if you do not want “Left” and “Right” printed on the cuffs.

Can I use it as a sewing pattern?

Use it as a shape to trace on felt or fleece and add your own seam allowance; it is a craft template, not a fitted knitting or sewing pattern.

Can I use it with a Cricut or Silhouette?

Yes. Download the SVG: it is true size in millimetres, with the cut lines and holes on their own layers.

Can I sell things I make with these mittens?

The designs are our own drawings: you may use them and anything you make with them, including things you sell, with no credit needed.
