Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum number of URLs in a sitemap?

50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. Beyond that, split into multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index.

Why does Search Console say 'couldn't fetch sitemap'?

Common causes are a non-200 response, a wrong content type, or malformed XML. This validator checks the XML is well-formed and correctly structured.

What lastmod date format does a sitemap need?

W3C / ISO-8601 — either YYYY-MM-DD or a full timestamp like 2026-08-05T12:00:00+00:00. The tool flags invalid dates.

Should noindex pages be in my sitemap?

No — only include canonical, indexable URLs. Listing noindex or duplicate URLs wastes crawl budget.

Is my sitemap uploaded anywhere?

No. It's parsed and validated entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
