E.S.A. + OTE

A state-group division in Genoa.

Esaote began in Genoa in 1982 as a biomedical electronics division of Ansaldo, then part of Italy’s state-owned IRI–Finmeccanica group. Italian Wikipedia says the division was set up on the initiative of Carlo Castellano, at the time Ansaldo’s head of planning, and the company’s own history page describes a moment when a dedicated Italian company for non-invasive diagnostic imaging looked like “mission impossible.”

The name records a chain of mergers. In 1984 the Ansaldo division and the activities of Elsag were brought together in Esacontrol. In 1986 the state holding STET bought OTE Biomedica of Florence, and in 1988 it passed to Finmeccanica, which merged it with Esacontrol’s biomedical business to form Esaote Biomedica, Italian Wikipedia says. The company explains the acronym itself: ESA stands for Elsag, Selenia and Ansaldo, “the Genoese soul of the group,” and OTE for Officine Toscane Elettromeccaniche, the Florentine workshop side. Genoa and Florence remain its two Italian bases today.

Italian Wikipedia adds that in 1989 NASA chose an Esaote ultrasound system to study cardiovascular physiology in flight. The company dates its international expansion to 1992, when it made its first acquisition in the United States, Biosound.

Buyouts, a listing and an award.

Esaote left state ownership in 1994 through a management buyout and took the name Esaote S.p.A. It was listed on the Milan stock exchange in June 1996 — the company says on Nasdaq in New York as well — and was delisted in 2003 after a takeover bid for the whole capital by the pharmaceutical group Bracco. Sources differ on when Bracco gained control: Italian Wikipedia says 1995, English Wikipedia 1998.

A second management buyout followed in January 2006, backed by banks and investment firms including Intesa Sanpaolo and Monte dei Paschi di Siena together with about a hundred managers, Italian Wikipedia says. In November 2009 the Swiss investor Ares Life Sciences took 40 per cent; the company calls this its third buyout, with the rest still held by the earlier shareholders and management. Castellano stepped down as chairman in October 2014; Paolo Monferino succeeded him, and Karl-Heinz Lumpi became chief executive, Italian Wikipedia says.

Design has a place in its record. In 2001 Esaote won the Compasso d’Oro, the Italian industrial-design award, for the E-Scan magnetic resonance system designed by Fabio Rezzonico, according to Italian Wikipedia. The company itself describes its products as “the epitome of Italian design, which combines aesthetics and ergonomics.”

Its range splits in two. Ultrasound, which the company calls its core business, is sold as the MyLab family. Its MRI line is made up of dedicated and open systems, with names such as O-scan, S-scan and G-scan Brio, and the company says it has also worked in interventional ultrasound since 2002. Its Ebit unit handles medical IT.

Consoles, probes and radiology suites.

Ultrasound and medical imaging makers sell to a small, expert audience, and their brands are built to be read in clinical rooms rather than shop windows. A typical ultrasound system is a grey and white console on wheels, parked beside a hospital bed, with a touch panel, a keyboard of controls and a row of probes hanging from its side. The maker’s name usually sits small on the front or the monitor frame; the shape, the colour of the plastics and the layout of the controls do much of the brand’s work.

The screen matters as much as the shell. Scan screens are typically dark and blue-grey, with the greyscale image at the centre, and makers give their measurement tools, presets and assistant features their own product names. Newer handheld scanners shrink the console to a single probe that connects to a phone or tablet, so the app becomes the visible face of the brand.

Larger imaging equipment, such as X-ray, CT, MRI and mammography systems, lives in radiology suites, where the machine is often a white ring or open frame in a quiet room. Here the brand appears on the gantry, in the room’s lighting and on the operator console next door. Several makers in this guide build dedicated or open MRI and digital radiography alongside ultrasound.

Much of this branding is shown first at trade fairs. The annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago and the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) are where makers launch systems, stage booths and present new software, and both Samsung and Esaote have used them for product introductions. Ownership also changes often in this field: brands pass between state groups, investors and larger industrial companies while keeping their names.

Esaote

Genoa headquarters, new owners.

Ownership has kept moving while the name stayed. In December 2017 the whole company was sold to a consortium of Chinese medical-technology companies and investment funds; the deal closed in April 2018, after the Italian government gave a favourable opinion in February, with the headquarters kept in Genoa, Italian Wikipedia says. Franco Fontana became chief executive in May 2019.

The latest change came in 2026. On 9 October 2026 Midea Group, the Chinese company better known for home appliances, completed the purchase of a controlling stake, EqualOcean reported the next day; Esaote joins Midea Healthcare but continues as an independent business led by Fontana and headquartered in Genoa. The stake was not disclosed in that report, while Esaote’s own history page says Midea acquired full stakes.

Where it makes things is set out on its website. Its head office sits on the Erzelli hill above Sestri Ponente, at the Great Campus science park, alongside ultrasound research and medical IT labs; a newer plant at Multedo, also in Genoa, handles MRI research and production, repairs and spare parts; Florence is home to a centre of excellence for ultrasound probes, opened in March 2017. Italian Wikipedia says the head office moved to Erzelli in May 2016, and MRI production moved in May 2017 from the historic Genoa site on Via Siffredi to Multedo. The company also lists production in Sittard in the Netherlands and at Danyang in China’s Jiangsu province, the latter only for the Chinese market. In January 2024 it presented a new brand identity, with redrawn logos and graphics for brochures and events, at a sales meeting in Florence, Italian Wikipedia says. The company, which marked its 40th anniversary in 2022, says it has around 1,280 employees, subsidiaries across Europe, Latin America and China, and sales in about 100 countries; it presented ultrasound for interventional radiology at the European Congress of Radiology in 2026.

For a design guide, Esaote shows how an industrial acronym can become a clinical brand that survives several changes of owner. Compare Siemens Healthineers, a European imaging maker with its own long lineage, and Samsung Medison, another ultrasound specialist absorbed into a large industrial group. For this guide we use a harbour navy, a fog grey and a coral with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
