The Timrå Workshop

A doctor, a patient and a basement.

Permobil began with a doctor. Per Uddén, a Swedish physician, started the work that became the company in the 1960s, and Timrå, just north of Sundsvall, was where it took shape: the broadcaster SVT said in 2024 that it “all began in a workshop in Timrå in the 1960s,” and showed footage of Uddén there from its own Aktuellt news programme in 1968.

The founding date varies with the source. Permobil’s website says “since 1967,” and Mobility Management, marking the company’s fiftieth year in October 2017, also gave 1967. SVT says Uddén produced the first model of the Permobilen in 1966. Swedish Wikipedia gives both 1963 and 1967 on its company page, and its page on Uddén says he learned of an electric wheelchair in 1963 and launched the first Permobilen in 1966. We use 1967 as the company’s own date.

The origin story is told in the trade press. In the 2017 article, Larry Jackson, then president of Permobil’s Americas business, said Uddén had a patient who wanted to go outside, that the wheelchairs of the day were not built for it, and that the American maker Everest & Jennings told him its chairs were not designed for outdoor use. Uddén and a friend then built a power chair in a hospital basement, Jackson said. He added that Uddén pressed the Swedish government to pay for such chairs, and got funding in the late 1960s. Permobil’s own account says he met polio patients who could not get outdoors.

The company still repeats Uddén’s founding statement, that every person has the right to have a disability compensated as far as possible by aids of the same technical standard as those we all use in everyday life. Patricia Industries, the arm of Investor that holds Permobil, quotes a version of it too.

From family firm to Investor.

The private equity house Nordic Capital bought Permobil in 2006, and in its own statement later described turning a “Swedish family run business” into a global company, with investment in research and a push into new markets such as the United States. On 27 March 2013 Nordic Capital announced an agreement to sell Permobil to Investor AB, the investment company founded by the Wallenberg family in 1916. Headquarters were then in Timrå, and the staff numbered about 700.

Investor holds the company through Patricia Industries, which it set up in 2015 for its wholly owned companies. The two descriptions differ slightly: Permobil’s website calls itself a wholly owned subsidiary, while Patricia Industries lists its stake as 98 percent of capital and votes.

Under Investor, Permobil bought its way into new product lines. It acquired TiLite, the maker of customised titanium and aluminium manual chairs founded in 1998 and based in Pasco, Washington, in May 2014. It bought the medical division of ROHO in March 2015; ROHO, founded in 1973 by the electrical engineer Robert H. Graebe, makes air-cell seat cushions. Mobility Management called that deal a “triple play.” MAX Mobility, the Tennessee maker of the SmartDrive power-assist unit for manual chairs, was announced in December 2017, and PDG Mobility of Vancouver, known for manual tilt-in-space chairs, followed in September 2023. Permobil’s brand page also lists Comfort, a seating maker dating from 1990.

Permobil called North America its largest market in 2025. Its North American headquarters is at Lebanon, Tennessee, where a 120,000-square-foot building opened in 2010–11, with 80,000 square feet for manufacturing, Mobility Management reported in 2011. The state of Tennessee announced a further 70,000-square-foot addition in March 2022.

In Sweden the company moved too. In November 2024 SVT reported the opening of a 14,000-square-metre plant at Birsta in Sundsvall, bringing staff under one roof, with just under 30 chairs a day coming off the line. Swedish Wikipedia now gives the head office as Sundsvall, at Birsta. Chuck Witkowski became chief executive on 1 July 2025, succeeding Bengt Thorsson.

How the category presents itself.

Wheelchairs, walkers and scooters have their own route to market. Writing in 1991, the journalist Joseph Shapiro noted that, unlike virtually every other product, wheelchairs were not sold directly to users but marketed through occupational and physical therapists and medical supply dealers. Today’s makers still describe much the same route: Platinum Equity said in 2024 that Sunrise Medical sells through homecare dealers and distributors, and Invacare’s 2024 announcement named home medical equipment providers alongside retail and online channels.

Catalogues in this trade deal in frames, seats and options. The International Directory of Company Histories described one popular Sunrise chair of the early 1990s as made in one-inch steps of back height, seat depth and seat width. Colour sits on the same order form: Sunrise Medical’s 2025 frame palette gave its shades names of their own, such as Midnight Blue and Turbo Green.

Trade fairs are the category’s public stage. Rehacare, which German Wikipedia says began in 1977 and has been run by Messe Düsseldorf since 1999, shows aids including mobility products to users and relatives as well as to specialists; its organisers list the next edition for September 2027. Medtrade, in the United States, is a trade conference for medical supplies, according to English Wikipedia.

The people in the pictures matter too. Shapiro wrote that Quickie’s brochures showed its chairs in use by active people, at the office and elsewhere, and Sunrise Medical’s American website today quotes named wheelchair users in their own words on work and travel. This guide sets out what can be checked about each brand: who founded it, who owns it, and what it says about where its products are made, with the company’s own claims marked as such.

Permobil

One name over many brands.

The name is the brand’s most unusual asset. Swedish Wikipedia says the word permobil has become so dominant in Sweden that it is used generally for scooter-type electric wheelchairs, even though the company concentrates on power chairs of another kind. The same page says the name came from a spontaneous naming contest at an event attended by the designer Sigvard Bernadotte.

Design history has noticed the chair. Sweden’s Nationalmuseum lists a Permobil from the 1960s in its applied art and design collection, crediting Per Uddén and Henrik Wahlforss as designers and Permobil AB as manufacturer.

For years the acquired names ran side by side. A joint website for Permobil, ROHO and TiLite came in January 2017. In March 2021 Permobil went further, Mobility Management reported: a new brand promise, “Innovating for Individuals,” four core values, one global site at permobil.com, and a plan to unite Permobil, TiLite, ROHO, Comfort and SmartDrive “under the singular global brand of Permobil,” with the older names living on inside product names. Its brand page today treats them as product brands.

Recognition has come for individual products, by Permobil’s account. It says the carbon-fibre TiLite CR1, designed by Doug Garven, a wheelchair user and veteran designer, won gold in both the A’ Design Award and the MUSE Design Awards. A Tennessee state release of 2022 noted that TIME named the Explorer Mini, a powered chair for toddlers, a best invention of 2021, and Permobil reports a 2022 Edison Award for it. Jackson told Mobility Management in 2017 that Permobil made the industry’s first front-wheel-drive and mid-wheel-drive power chairs; that is the company’s claim. In September 2026 it announced the compact M4 Nexa.

Not every product story has gone smoothly. In a notice dated August 2025, Max Mobility and Permobil said they had voluntarily expanded a recall, first opened in December 2024 and rated Class I, to cover all SpeedControl Dials for the SmartDrive MX2+.

For a design guide, Permobil shows how a company name can pass into everyday language, and how a group can gather bought brands under one word. Compare Trionic, another Swedish mobility maker, and Sunrise Medical, another wheelchair group. For this guide we use a spruce green, a pale birch and an amber with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
