Wenzhou, 2019

A young storage maker on the Zhejiang coast.

Fox ESS is a young company. English Wikipedia gives its founding date as 23 September 2019 and places its headquarters in Wenzhou, in China’s Zhejiang province; pv magazine also dated the founding to September 2019 in a June 2025 report. The legal name in Chinese is 麦田能源股份有限公司, and the company trades internationally as Fox ESS. Wikipedia describes it as a privately held maker of photovoltaic inverters and battery energy storage systems for homes and businesses.

The company’s own history page sets out the early steps. It says an angel funding round and a research and development centre in Wuxi came at the very start, followed by its first five proprietary products, its first overseas shipment and the start of a global sales network. Wikipedia, citing the company, puts the first products and the first shipments abroad in 2020 and the opening of the Wenzhou headquarters in 2021. The company also lists early branches with their own sales and service teams in the United Kingdom and Poland, then a research centre in Shanghai.

One founder has led the company throughout. In July 2023 the Brazilian trade site Canal Solar quoted Michael Zhu as founder and chief executive, and pv magazine Australia still named him chief executive in June 2026. Canal Solar also reported that Fox ESS belongs to the Tsingshan Group, which it described as a major stainless steel producer, and said the link gave the inverter maker a vertically integrated production chain. The same report said Fox ESS had closed a Series A round in October 2022 and a second round in May 2023 led by Zhaoxi Capital.

The next step was the stock market. In June 2025 pv magazine reported that the Shenzhen Stock Exchange had approved the company’s application to list on its ChiNext board, with the money earmarked for an intelligent energy storage industrial park, a research centre and a marketing and technical support network. The company’s own timeline records the IPO application under 2025.

Inverters, batteries and a cloud.

Fox ESS builds equipment for converting, storing and managing electricity, mainly for rooftop solar. Wikipedia lists residential and commercial battery systems, grid-connected and hybrid inverters, microinverters, electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and energy-management software, and names its monitoring platform FoxCloud. The company’s history page adds the order in which those ranges arrived: EV chargers first, then a commercial and industrial storage system and its first microinverter, then its first heat pump and a utility-scale storage product with a first utility project in Europe.

In an interview published by ESS News at Intersolar Europe in July 2026, Christoph Schön, general manager for the German-speaking region, described a “360 Solutions” concept that ties balcony solar, home storage, a heat pump and EV charging to one cloud platform. He named the HP-Series heat pump and the G-Max Plus commercial storage architecture, said a first AI-enabled version was running on more than 500 systems in the Netherlands, and called the company’s character “manufacturing-first.” The same piece noted that S&P Global Energy had ranked Fox ESS first worldwide in residential energy storage for 2025, and first in Germany.

Australia has become a focus. In June 2026 pv magazine Australia reported two-year supply agreements with the distributors Solar Juice and OSW, a planned 30-member service team, and new offices in Melbourne and Sydney. The company’s own timeline adds branches in Brazil, Italy, South Africa and Australia, a European headquarters in Germany, a research centre in Wuhan, and teams in Pakistan, France, Spain and the United States.

The company says its manufacturing is in Wenzhou, where it built a production base of about 330,000 square metres there, and its timeline records that the base’s second phase went into operation in 2026. It also says it has been listed as Tier 1 by BloombergNEF; that is the company’s statement.

Inverter makers and their stage.

Solar inverter makers sell a box that most owners rarely look at. The inverter usually hangs on a garage or utility-room wall, with the panels it serves out of sight on the roof, so the companies that make them tend to show the whole system: rows of modules on a tiled roof, a slim inverter mounted beside the fuse board, and, more and more often, a stack of battery modules standing next to it.

The screen has become as important as the hardware. Inverter makers commonly pair their hardware with a monitoring app or energy management platform, and their marketing leans on phone screens with daily power curves, battery charge levels and the flow of electricity between roof, home and grid. Growatt and GoodWe both describe software platforms as part of their range, and GoodWe linked its 2022 rebrand and the slogan “Smart Energy Innovator” to that shift.

Factories and trade fairs supply the rest of the imagery. Brand imagery in this field also turns to production lines, test benches and new headquarters buildings, while the industry gathers each year at shows such as Intersolar Europe in Munich and its regional editions, where makers fill large stands with inverters, battery cabinets and charging equipment and launch new product lines.

Two of the makers in this guide, Growatt and GoodWe, were founded in 2010, in Shenzhen and Suzhou, and both have since added home and commercial batteries to their inverters. This guide sets out what can be checked about each brand — who founded it, who owns it, where it says its products are made — and marks clearly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Fox ESS

Life by Sunshine.

The company sums itself up in three words: “Life by Sunshine.” The slogan sits at the top of its own about page and again over its history timeline. Beneath it, the company tells its story in plain, warm language: Fox ESS says it was born from a simple belief that the sun shines on everyone, so its power should too, and that a young team set out to remove barriers between families and their own clean energy. It is a household pitch rather than a technical one, aimed at the homes that buy its batteries.

The way the company speaks in public follows the same line. In the 2026 ESS News interview its German manager talked about bigger home batteries, heat pumps, EV charging and AI-managed energy, and described the brand’s strategy as a complete system across solar, storage, heating and charging, connected through one platform. In Australia the chief executive spoke of supporting households and businesses. The products are named in short, practical codes rather than invented words, with series names such as HP for heat pumps and G-Max for commercial storage, and the cloud is simply FoxCloud.

For a design guide, Fox ESS shows how a storage maker barely seven years old builds a brand on a sunny slogan, a house name and a growing family of grey boxes and stacked batteries. Compare Sigenergy, a Shanghai storage maker founded three years later, and Sungrow, the older Hefei inverter maker. For this guide we use an ember orange, charcoal and warm white with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
