A split in two

A new name on an 1884 company.

NCR Atleos is a new name with one of the oldest histories in cash machines. It was created when NCR Corporation split in two: NCR announced the plan on 16 September 2022, unveiled the names on 24 July 2023 and completed the separation on 16 October 2023, English Wikipedia says. The digital-commerce side kept the legal company and became NCR Voyix; the ATM business was spun off as NCR Atleos, whose shares began regular trading on the New York Stock Exchange on 17 October 2023 under the symbol NATL, the company announced that day. It is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

The company says its legacy “spans back to 1884.” That is NCR’s date. English Wikipedia says the firm began as the National Manufacturing Company of Dayton, Ohio, set up to make and sell the mechanical cash register invented by James Ritty in 1879; in 1884 John Henry Patterson and his brother Frank bought the company and its patents and renamed it the National Cash Register Company. Patterson built a sales force that followed a standard script, opened a sales training school in 1893, and ran a “Get a Receipt” campaign that English Wikipedia counts among the earliest advertising campaigns of its kind.

NCR’s early staff left marks well beyond the cash register. Thomas J. Watson Sr., later the head of IBM, rose to general sales manager at NCR, where he wrote the word “THINK” on an easel during a sales meeting; signs with the motto were put up in NCR buildings, and it later became an IBM symbol. Charles F. Kettering designed the first cash register powered by an electric motor at NCR in 1906, before he and Edward A. Deeds founded the company that became Delco, English Wikipedia says.

NCR’s history includes a major legal case. In 1912 the company was found guilty of violating the Sherman Antitrust Act, and Patterson and other executives were convicted; the convictions were overturned on appeal in 1915, English Wikipedia says. During the First World War NCR made fuses and aircraft instruments, and during the Second it built aero-engines, bomb sights and code-breaking machines, including the American bombe designed by Joseph Desch.

From the Model 770 to SelfServ.

Cash machines came later. English Wikipedia records NCR’s Model 770 in National Westminster and Barclays branches in Britain in the 1970s, and says the company made more serious inroads with the Model 5070, developed at its plant in Dundee, Scotland, and introduced in 1983. That generation divided the machine into modules that could be removed for repair or refilling, and came in lobby and through-the-wall versions. The 56xx series followed from 1991 to 1997, some of it badged AT&T during the years the telecoms company owned NCR, from 1991 until NCR became independent again on 1 January 1997. As it prepared for that, NCR commissioned the graphic designer Saul Bass to design a new logo and corporate identity.

The range kept its numbers. The Personas 58xx series ran from 1998 to 2008, adding deposit, coin dispensing and, later, cash recycling; the SelfServ line arrived in 2008 and was refreshed with a new design language in 2015; and cash-recycling models in the 206x and 208x lines were released in 2021, according to English Wikipedia. NCR closed ATM manufacturing at Dundee in 2009 but kept research and development for the financial industry there. It moved its headquarters from Dayton to near Duluth, Georgia, in 2009 and into Midtown Atlanta in 2018, and in 2021 agreed to buy the ATM operator Cardtronics. Two older NCR firsts sit outside the ATM story: in 1953 two NCR chemists in Dayton filed the patent for the carbonless copy paper sold as NCR Paper, and in 1974 scanners and computers developed by NCR were used for the first supermarket checkout scan of a product carrying a Universal Product Code, at Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio.

NCR Atleos’s website sorts its hardware into cash-recycling ATMs, multi-function ATMs and interactive teller machines, and cash-dispense ATMs, alongside ATM-as-a-service contracts and the Allpoint network. The company says its own independent ATM network is the largest in the world, and lists awards from the ATM Industry Association, including its 2024 Outstanding Service Award and the Peter Kulik Innovation Award for an ATM service-management platform assisted by artificial intelligence.

Design and documentation.

Cash-handling makers sell machines that most people meet without ever choosing them. Their products appear in bank lobbies and in the walls of branches, behind teller counters as cash recyclers, beside supermarket tills as coin counters, and in the printing halls where banknotes are made. The maker’s name is often a small plate on a large machine, so the brand does much of its work in brochures, trade stands and service contracts rather than on the street.

The machines themselves come in families. NCR’s first serious ATM generation, the 5070 of 1983, was developed at its Dundee plant in Scotland and came in lobby and through-the-wall versions, with modules that could be taken out for repair or refilling, according to English Wikipedia. That modular build lends itself to cutaway diagrams, which trace the path a note takes through a machine from cassette to dispenser.

Trade fairs and bank technology conferences are where new machines are shown. Diebold demonstrated a cash machine prototype at the American Bankers Association’s annual meeting in 1966, and in October 2015 showed two ATM concepts at the Money20/20 show in Las Vegas, English Wikipedia says. The ATM Industry Association gives its own awards, which makers list on their websites.

Ownership in this sector changes often. Diebold took over Germany’s Wincor Nixdorf in 2016, NCR split off its ATM business as NCR Atleos in 2023, and in February 2026 the cash carrier Brink’s agreed to acquire NCR Atleos, ATM Marketplace reported. This guide sets out what can be checked about each brand — who founded it, who owns it and where its machines are made — and marks clearly what rests on the company’s own word.

NCR Atleos

An agreed sale to Brink’s.

Its life as an independent company may be short. On 26 February 2026 ATM Marketplace reported that Brink’s, the cash-management company, had agreed to acquire NCR Atleos, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2027. Shareholders of both companies approved the deal on 30 June 2026, the two companies announced, adding that it had received US antitrust clearance. On 5 November 2026 ATM Marketplace reported that NCR Atleos expected the combination to close in early January 2027, and that it had dropped its quarterly earnings call because of the pending transaction.

For a design guide, NCR Atleos shows how a new name can be built on an inherited one: a coined word set beside three letters with more than a century behind them. Compare Brink’s, its announced buyer, and Diebold Nixdorf, the other American ATM maker with nineteenth-century roots. For this guide we use a deep teal and a warm amber with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
