Zegna Brand Guidelines
A wool mill in the Biellese Alps that became a menswear group, and took a mountain road as its mark.

Two constants: a pine, moss and undyed wool palette and a modern geometric sans register. Abstract homage — not a Zegna product or mark; no garment, logo or label is reproduced.
The 1910 Deed
Three brothers and a fourth partner.
Zegna began at Trivero, in the Biellese Alps of Piedmont, with a notary’s deed dated 11 May 1910. Fondazione Zegna published its text in 2020. The deed set up a partnership between the brothers Edoardo, Mario and Ermenegildo Zegna and a fourth partner, Costanzo Giardino Vitri, who, the foundation says, had made some money in America. Edoardo was 26 and Mario 24. Ermenegildo had just turned 18, not yet of age, so his father Angelo, a former watchmaker who had opened a textile workshop, had to emancipate him legally before he could sign. The group now gives the short version, “founded in 1910 in Trivero.” Italian Wikipedia names the first firm Zegna & Giardino Vitri; English Wikipedia gives Zegna & Giardino.
Vitri and Edoardo soon left, Italian Wikipedia says, and Ermenegildo ran the mill with Mario until the early 1940s. His aim was to make fine fabrics in Italy that could compete with those imported from Britain. He travelled to England, visited mills and bought machinery there, and he sourced wool directly from places including Australia, South Africa and Mongolia, according to English Wikipedia and MF Fashion. He also marketed the name early: the mill stamped its mark on the selvedge of its cloth and advertised on trains, Italian Wikipedia says, and MF Fashion described a 1930s poster showing the mill among its mountains at the centre of a globe.
The mill grew between the wars, from more than 700 workers in the late 1920s to more than 1,000 by the end of the 1930s, English Wikipedia says. In 1938 it set up a New York subsidiary, Zegna Woollens Corporation, to sell fabrics in the United States.
Ermenegildo Zegna’s public standing rose in the same years, under Italy’s Fascist government. Italian Wikipedia records that King Victor Emmanuel III made him a Cavaliere del Lavoro in 1935, and that he received the title of Count of Monterubello in 1939. From 1932 he had facilities built at Trivero, among them a library, a nursery, a gym and a cinema-theatre, and in 1938 work began on a scenic road across the mountains above the mill. MF Fashion reported in 2022 that the Second World War interrupted this programme. In the 1940s his sons Aldo and Angelo entered the business, which took the name Lanificio Ermenegildo Zegna e Figli.

From cloth to finished suits.
Aldo and Angelo Zegna took over in the mid-1960s and moved the company from cloth into finished clothing. MF Fashion describes the reasoning: fine fabric was not enough if others controlled the quality of the garment. A factory opened at Novara in 1968; plants in Spain, Greece and Switzerland followed, English Wikipedia says. The made-to-measure service Su Misura arrived in 1972. The wool link stayed public through the Wool Awards in Australia, from 1963, and the Mohair Trophy in South Africa, from 1970.
Shops came next, with a first owned boutique in Paris in 1980 and Milan in 1985. English Wikipedia says that in 1991 Zegna became the first luxury label to open a store in China, in Beijing. The third generation took charge in the 1990s, with Gildo Zegna as chief executive from 1997 and his cousin Paolo as chairman. In 2008 the group moved into a Milan headquarters designed by Antonio Citterio and Gianmaria Beretta. Alessandro Sartori, who had led the ZZegna line from 2003 to 2011, became artistic director in June 2016, MF Fashion reported.
The group then bought into its own supply chain, which it calls the Filiera. Its website lists the dates: the silk weaver Tessitura di Novara in 2009, a stake in the comber Pettinatura di Verrone in 2012, a majority of Bonotto of Molvena in 2016 and of the jersey maker Dondi in 2019. Italian Wikipedia says Zegna, Loro Piana and Marzotto each took 15 percent of Pettinatura di Verrone. In 2021 Zegna added a majority of Tessitura Ubertino and, jointly with Prada, the cashmere spinner Filati Biagioli Modesto; the two groups also took a minority stake in Luigi Fedeli e Figlio in 2023. The group describes all this as a “Made in Italy Luxury Textile Laboratory Platform.”
The portfolio widened as well. In August 2018 Zegna bought 85 percent of Thom Browne, the New York label. Agnona, the womenswear business, which MF Fashion dates to a 1999 agreement, was sold in 2020 to another branch of the family, English Wikipedia says, with the group keeping 30 percent. In 2023 Zegna took on Tom Ford Fashion; the group’s website says this runs through an exclusive long-term licence from The Estée Lauder Companies, which owns the Tom Ford brand and trademarks.
Typography
Cloth, chalk and shop windows.
Tailoring houses have an unusual advantage in presenting themselves: the work itself is graphic. A bespoke order follows a set sequence. The customer and tailor choose fabrics, linings and details, the tailor takes measurements and drafts a pattern from scratch, and the cloth is chalked out and cut with shears before being basted for a fitting. Chalk marks on cloth, paper patterns on hooks and a cutter working at the board are the working tools of that sequence, and they also make natural pictures for a house’s windows, pages and packaging.
The street matters too. Savile Row in Mayfair, London, is known principally for bespoke men’s tailoring, and tailors have traded there since at least 1803. Its windows can be a statement in themselves: when Nutters of Savile Row opened in 1969, it used bold displays created by the then unknown Simon Doonan. In Italy the home town often takes the street’s place, and a house can put a place name at the front of its story, as Zegna does with its mill in the Biellese Alps.
Cloth carries the identity as well. Fabrics and linings are chosen at the start of an order, which puts the fabric book in the customer’s hands early. Mills keep their own record of that work: the Zegna archive at Trivero holds sample books alongside technical drawings.
The words matter as much as the images. A bespoke garment starts from a new pattern, made to measure adjusts an existing one, and ready-to-wear comes in standard sizes. In June 2008 Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority ruled that an advertisement calling a suit cut and sewn by machine “bespoke” did not breach its code, and the term has stayed contested since.

A modern geometric sans, for a name reset in “a modernized font.” (Specimen set in Jost, a sans STAND-IN; NOT the Zegna logo.)
One Name
A road turned into a brand mark.
Ermenegildo Zegna became simply Zegna in December 2021, FashionUnited reported, with a logo inspired by Road 232, the Panoramica Zegna that the founder promoted. MF Fashion described it as a move to one label, the result of more than two years’ work. The group explains the mark in its own words: “a foliage-coloured brand mark” that “pays tribute to Our Road,” with the name “updated in a modernized font.”
Oasi Zegna, created in 1993, covers 100 square kilometres from Trivero to the peaks of the Biella Alps, and the group says more than 500,000 trees have been planted there since the 1930s. Casa Zegna at Trivero has held the historical archive since 2007, including sample books and technical drawings, English Wikipedia says. Artribune reported in 2023 that the mill’s Sala Quadri hangs a cycle of paintings by Ettore Pistoletto Olivero, the father of the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, showing wool being worked in medieval Florence.
On manufacture, the group says that the complete process at the Lanificio in Piedmont, from raw material selection to finishing, is its own, and that its Filiera is “owned and controlled by the Group.” The Accademia dei Maestri, the group’s training project, is presented as a way of passing on those skills.
The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange as ZGN on 20 December 2021, through a merger with Investindustrial Acquisition Corp., a blank-check company. The family kept control: English Wikipedia gives it 60.3 percent, held directly and through its company Monterubello. In July 2025 Temasek of Singapore raised its holding to 10 percent, FashionUnited reported. English Wikipedia says the legal seat has been in the Netherlands since 2022, while operations remain based in Italy.
Leadership moved on in January 2026. Under a structure announced in November 2025, Gildo Zegna moved to group executive chairman and Gianluca Tagliabue, until then finance and operations chief, became interim group chief executive from 1 January, with appointment to follow at the 2026 annual meeting, FashionUnited reported; Italian Wikipedia now lists him as chief executive. Edoardo and Angelo Zegna, of the fourth generation, were named co-chief executives of the Zegna brand.
For a design guide, Zegna shows how a brand can turn a real road and a real place into a mark. Compare Thom Browne, the suit label it bought into in 2018, and Loro Piana, another Italian house built on fine fibres. For this guide we use a pine, a moss green and an undyed wool tone with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
