Beet seed in the Pévèle, named after a son.

Florimond Desprez is a family seed company in Cappelle-en-Pévèle, in the Nord department of northern France. French Wikipedia dates it to 1830 and names its founder as Jean-Baptiste Auguste Desprez, a miller’s son who began producing and selecting sugar-beet seed. He named the business after his son, Florimond Desprez, born the same year; Florimond lived until 1900, the article says. The 1830 date is repeated in the regional business press: Le Journal des Entreprises wrote in 2022 that breeding had been the company’s field “since 1830,” and La Gazette Nord-Pas-de-Calais wrote in 2023 that it was created that year in the village where it is still based. The sources read for this guide do not describe the company during the German occupation of the Nord in 1940–44.

The family farm also became part of public research: the French National Assembly’s biographical record of a later family member, Victor Desprez-Potié, says that Florimond Célestin Joseph Desprez created a large farm at Cappelle that was made a state experimental station in 1888.

The company widened its crops over the following century. French Wikipedia lists a wheat breeding programme from 1919, work on barley from 1945, then durum wheat in 1964 and triticale in 1981. Beet stayed at the centre: La Gazette Nord-Pas-de-Calais described the group in 2023 as one of the world’s leading suppliers of sugar-beet seed.

Beet, wheat, chicory and potatoes.

Today Florimond Desprez works as both a variety breeder and a seed producer, two jobs French Wikipedia names in its first line. Its research is organised in two groups, cereals with oil and protein crops on one side and beet and chicory on the other, the article says. La Gazette Nord-Pas-de-Calais listed the species it works on in 2023 as sugar and fodder beet, chicory, soft and durum wheat, barley and triticale, protein peas, soya and potatoes.

Some of its varieties are familiar names to farmers. The same report cited the Soissons wheat, the Charlotte potato and the Jamon beets as varieties developed by the group that many growers now treat as references. In 2022 Le Journal des Entreprises described the group as specialised in soft wheat, sugar beet and potato, with durum wheat and industrial chicory as further lines, and wrote that it ran 18 research centres around the world.

Breeding is slow work. Marin Desprez, the group’s director of strategy, told Le Journal des Entreprises in 2022 that a new cereal variety takes seven to ten years, and that each one is tested in different conditions in several countries before it is sold. In 2022 the group signed a financing agreement with the European Investment Bank to speed up its research on adapting crops to a changing climate, both papers reported; Le Journal des Entreprises placed the loan within the European Green Deal. Marin Desprez told that paper the company’s work sits between two current concerns, climate change and society’s wish to use fewer pesticides, both moving faster than farming can adapt its varieties. He told La Gazette that the company develops its new varieties by crossing, without genetic modification, and that new needs include beets that resist the virus yellows disease and wheat that can be harvested earlier in the summer.

Potatoes came through acquisitions. The group returned to potato breeding in 2014 by buying Germicopa of Quimper, in Brittany, Le Journal des Entreprises reported in July 2025, when it also bought 49 per cent of the Danish seed-potato company Danespo from its partner DLF and became the majority shareholder. Germicopa and Danespo now form the group’s potato business unit under one management team, the paper reported, citing a company statement that also announced a new sorting and storage unit for seed potatoes in Denmark and a new research station for Germicopa.

The category.

Grass, forage and field seed companies sell something that looks almost the same in every bag, so much of their identity sits in where the seed ends up. Their pictures tend to come from three places: the finished turf of a football stadium or golf course, the cattle or sheep grazing a pasture, and the breeding plots where new varieties are tested in long rows before they reach a farmer. The Danish encyclopedia Lex, for example, illustrates its entry on DLF with a stadium pitch in Paris and a golf tournament in Arizona.

The seed bag itself often carries the brand. Bags stacked on pallets in a warehouse or a dealer’s yard are a common sight in the trade, and some companies make the bag the signature: Barenbrug says its grass seed is sold in yellow bags, and a 2020 release from its New Zealand business described the new name going onto those bags.

Many of these firms are owned by farmers or families rather than by listed groups, and they say so. DLF is held by a cooperative of Danish seed growers, according to Lex, while Barenbrug describes four generations of family ownership. Founding dates, anniversaries and long histories of mergers are therefore part of how such companies present themselves.

The trade also meets in person. Field days, demonstration plots and agricultural fairs such as Agritechnica in Germany and Farm Progress in the United States are where breeders show varieties to farmers, dealers and contractors. This guide sets out what can be checked about each company, who founded it, who owns it and what it sells, and marks clearly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Florimond Desprez

A family name kept on the door.

The company has stayed in the family and kept its founder’s son’s name. La Gazette Nord-Pas-de-Calais reported in 2023 that it was led by the cousins Bruno and François Desprez, the fifth generation, alongside members of the sixth generation including Marin Desprez; French Wikipedia also names the two cousins at the head of the group. Both publications describe it as independent, and the 2022 report in Le Journal des Entreprises called it a family business working around the world.

Its headquarters is still in Cappelle-en-Pévèle, and the village remains a meeting point for the trade. In June 2026 La Gazette Nord-Pas-de-Calais reported that Semae, the French interprofessional body for seeds and plants, held a day on innovation in plant breeding at Florimond Desprez’s site there, with a round table on how breeders’ goals have moved from yield towards resilience to drought, heat, disease and pests.

The brand is a person’s full name. It names a son born in the founding year rather than the founder, and the group still trades under it nearly two centuries later.

For a design guide, Florimond Desprez shows how a family name can serve as a brand for a whole range of crops and for a group with businesses in several countries. Compare KWS, another breeder that began in sugar-beet seed, and DLF, its former partner in Danespo. For this guide we use beet red, wheat gold and leaf green with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
