Qinhuangdao, 1996

A device maker in a port city on the Bohai Sea.

Contec comes from Qinhuangdao, the port city on the Bohai Sea in Hebei province, east of Beijing. The company says it has focused on the research, manufacture and distribution of medical devices since 1996, and its history page gives that year as its founding. Its Chinese legal name, 康泰医学系统(秦皇岛)股份有限公司, carries the city in brackets; in English it trades as Contec Medical Systems Co., Ltd., and on its own website it writes the name in capitals, CONTEC.

The company’s timeline is short and practical. It says it began deploying telemedicine in 2010; set up Contec Medical Systems USA Inc. in Chicago in 2012; was named in the Forbes China list of most promising companies in 2013 and 2014; and in 2019 established subsidiaries in New Delhi, India, and Düsseldorf, Germany.

The listing came next. On 24 August 2020 the company joined ChiNext, the growth board of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange; Chinese Wikipedia’s list of ChiNext companies gives that date and the Qinhuangdao base, matching the company’s own account of an August 2020 listing.

Contec describes itself today as a company with more than 1,000 employees and a complete research, production and sales system in Qinhuangdao, which it calls one of the largest bases for medical-device research and manufacturing in China; that ranking is its own. It says it holds ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 quality-management certification, ISO 14001 environmental certification and BSCI social-compliance membership, and that its products carry CE marking and FDA clearance, with approvals in Canada, Japan and Brazil.

From a fingertip to the ultrasound room.

The product that carried Contec abroad was small. In the US Food and Drug Administration’s 510(k) database, the company’s first clearance, dated 5 May 2008, is for the CMS-50C fingertip pulse oximeter, a clip-on device that reads blood-oxygen saturation and pulse from a finger. The CMS-50D, CMS-50L and CMS-50DL followed in November 2008, and further oximeters in 2009 and 2015.

The same record traces the range widening. Contec filed a pocket fetal Doppler and a handheld electrocardiograph in 2009 and the PM50 patient monitor in 2010. In 2011 it added electronic sphygmomanometers, an ambulatory blood-pressure monitor and the TLC5000 dynamic ECG system. A B-ultrasound diagnostic system followed in 2017 and an oxygen concentrator in January 2019; colour Doppler ultrasound systems were cleared in 2024. Its earlier filings carried a Shanghai address; from 2016 they give Qinhuangdao. Leaving aside an unrelated firm with a similar name, the database lists 24 clearances under the Contec name between 2008 and 2024.

The company now says it makes more than 20 categories of products, naming pulse oximeters, ECG and EEG equipment, ultrasound and patient monitors, with infusion pumps and endoscopes also on its product menu. It says it holds more than 100 national patents and that its products reach more than 130 countries and regions.

One product has a dated regulatory record. On 30 January 2025 the FDA issued a safety communication on cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the CMS8000 patient monitor, including units relabelled and sold as the Epsimed MN-120, and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency published an advisory the same day, updated in February 2025; the advisory noted that the device may be relabelled and sold by resellers. The FDA’s recall database lists a Class II recall of the CMS8000 initiated in April 2025 and shown as ongoing. On 2 July 2025 the FDA updated its communication to announce that a Contec software patch was available.

Design and documentation.

Respiratory care and patient monitoring sit in two places at once: the hospital ward and the patient’s home. Companies in this field make ventilators, CPAP and bi-level machines, oxygen concentrators, pulse oximeters and bedside monitors, and the way they present themselves usually follows the device to wherever it is used — a ventilator beside an intensive care bed, a small machine on a bedside table at home, a clip on a fingertip.

Their pictures tend to fall into a few familiar scenes. In hospital settings, clinicians stand at monitors with waveform screens showing pressure, flow or oxygen saturation; at home, patients sleep with a mask on or carry a portable concentrator through an ordinary day. Patient stories, often tied to a named model, sit alongside product pages written for respiratory therapists, doctors and home-care providers.

The field also meets in public at medical congresses and trade fairs. The European Respiratory Society congress, the American Thoracic Society conference and the Medica fair in Düsseldorf are among the gatherings where respiratory and monitoring products are shown to clinicians and buyers, and company news is often timed around them.

The companies in this guide differ widely in age, size and ownership — family firms, units of larger groups and makers that have changed hands several times. Each section sets out what can be checked about one brand: who founded it, who owns it now, what it makes and what it says about itself, with the company’s own claims marked as its own. Where sources disagree on a date or an owner, both versions are given.

Contec

A capitalised name, a city in brackets.

Contec’s identity is plain and functional. On its website the name runs in capitals as CONTEC, and its model names follow a code-like pattern, CMS followed by a number, that appears across oximeters, monitors and ultrasound systems in the FDA filings. Newer models put the brand name into the code itself: the FDA cleared CONTEC08A and CONTEC08C electronic sphygmomanometers in April 2021, CONTEC10C and CONTEC10CL pocket fetal Dopplers in September 2022, and CONTEC 10D, 10E and 10F Dopplers in June 2024. Its full Chinese legal name places the company in Qinhuangdao.

The English name is shared. In the FDA database a Contec Medical Vision, Ltd., with an address in Fallston in the United States, filed xenon light sources in 1998 and has no link to the Qinhuangdao company; the CISA advisory of 2025 names the vendor as Contec Health. The Hebei maker’s own documents use Contec Medical Systems.

Its colours and lettering are not described in any published guideline, so nothing here should be read as an official brand standard. What the record shows is a company whose name became familiar through a fingertip device, and which built outward from there to monitors, ECGs, concentrators and ultrasound while keeping its base in one port city.

For a design guide, Contec shows how a maker of small, widely sold devices can build an identity on a plain capitalised name and a consistent model code. Compare Nonin, another maker known for fingertip oximeters, and Inogen, which makes oxygen concentrators. For this guide we use a navy, a sea green and a white with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
