The dress dial

Kurono Tokyo brings a master’s dial artistry within reach.

Kurono Tokyo is a lesson in dial artistry as the identity. A Japanese brand founded in 2019 in Tokyo by the independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, it makes elegant dress watches carrying his design hand.

Its identity is the dress dial. Kurono’s Chronograph 1, Toki and Mori are the watches it is known for — refined, textured dials in hand-mixed colours under domed sapphire. A watchmaker’s eye, at an accessible price. Design over specification.

(Honest notes: Kurono Tokyo is the accessible line of Hajime Asaoka, a celebrated independent Japanese watchmaker, founded in 2019 in Tokyo and sold in limited online drops. Its signature is Asaoka’s dial artistry — hand-drawn typography, hand-mixed textured dial colours (deep blue, green, salmon, malachite), domed sapphire — across models like the Chronograph 1 and 2, Toki, Mori and Calendrier. On the movement, be clear: Kurono uses outsourced Japanese movements (Miyota-based, with some Seiko or Sellita), not in-house calibres — so we keep it strictly separate from the high-end Hajime Asaoka brand, whose watches use his own hand-made calibres and cost far more. It is independent and Asaoka-led. There’s no official brand hex, and we reproduce no dial, hands or logo — these tones are an unofficial interpretation, and Asaoka’s design work is respected as his own. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Kurono Tokyo lives in a refined-jewel palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Kurono’s identity is refined, jewel-toned and elegant — a malachite, an ink, a salmon, a deep blue, and a cream. The palette leans refined jewel — the register of hand-mixed enamel dials and dress-watch subtlety. It signals artistry and restraint rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a refined-jewel palette signals dial artistry. Kurono’s world is a refined, elegant, hand-finished object. For designers, it is a reminder that colour and texture on a small surface — a dial — can carry a whole identity, and that a jewel-toned palette signals that craft. Because a jewel tone can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: design the dial; mix the colour by hand; keep it refined; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a dress serif — elegant, refined, Japanese.

Kurono’s identity carries an elegant, refined, Japanese spirit — a dress-watch, hand-finished object. A Japanese serif captures the mood: it is graceful and considered, the register of quiet elegance. Set in a refined-jewel palette, the dress serif feels elegant and refined — exactly the personality Kurono carries. It is Japanese rather than loud, mirroring a dress dial. (Kurono’s real dial and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a dress serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: elegant, refined and Japanese.

Dial artistry as identity

Kurono Tokyo stands for the dress dial.

Kurono Tokyo is a lesson in making the dial the design. A refined-jewel palette, a dress serif and a hand-finished dial make dial artistry the whole brand — elegant, refined, considered. The dial is the differentiator. The differentiator is a celebrated watchmaker’s design hand — typography, colour, proportion — applied to an accessible dress watch.

Put to work, the identity is craft over specification. A designer building in this spirit would pour the attention into the surface people actually read — the dial — rather than chase spec-sheet numbers, so the object wins on beauty and proportion. The lesson Kurono teaches is that a named design hand can carry an accessible line: Asaoka’s artistry gives the brand credibility and desirability, and a refined, elegant design language keeps that artistry legible across models.

For designers and brand-builders, Kurono offers a clear takeaway: let a design hand lead. The lessons: design the dial; mix the colour by hand; keep it refined; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate — and to keep two brands separate: Kurono is Asaoka’s accessible line with outsourced Miyota-based movements, distinct from the high-end Hajime Asaoka brand with its own hand-made calibres — the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. And it is a reminder that movement honesty matters in watches: because the calibres are third-party, we never imply they are in-house. It is a reminder, too, that a design hand carries IP: Asaoka’s dial work is his own, so we describe it but reproduce nothing. It is a reminder, too, that scarcity can be part of an identity: a limited-drop model concentrates attention on each release and lets the dial, not the marketing, do the talking. Kurono Tokyo made the dress dial the brand — proof that dial artistry can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Kurono Tokyo’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Kurono Tokyo or Hajime Asaoka, and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Kurono name, dials, hands and wordmark, and Hajime Asaoka’s designs, are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and texture swatches); no dial, hands, case or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (kuronotokyo.com; Worn & Wound): Kurono Tokyo is the accessible line of independent Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, founded in 2019 in Tokyo, known for elegant dress watches (the Chronograph 1, Toki, Mori) with hand-designed dials, sold in limited drops. Honest notes: Kurono uses outsourced Japanese movements (Miyota-based), not in-house calibres, and is distinct from the high-end Hajime Asaoka brand; it is independent and Asaoka-led; and no official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
