In China, for Global

A semiconductor founder and three devices at once.

Medtrum is a Shanghai company. Its Chinese website names it as Medtrum Technologies Inc. — in Chinese, Shanghai Yiyu Technology — and says it researches, produces and sells diabetes devices, under the motto “In China, for Global.” Trade press describes it plainly: Drug Delivery Business News has called it a “China-based company” in reports from 2023 to 2026.

The company says it was founded in 2008 by Scott Yang, who came to medical devices from the semiconductor industry. In an interview first published by the British magazine Desang Diabetes in March 2022 and reproduced on Medtrum’s website, Yang described wanting to use semiconductor and information technologies to make daily life with diabetes easier. In the same piece the company says that from the start it set out to develop three things in parallel: a tubeless patch pump, a continuous glucose monitoring system and an automated insulin delivery system.

Yang presented the work as multidisciplinary. The company says diabetes devices combine electronics, semiconductors, software, mechanics, algorithms, chemistry and functional materials, and that it deliberately recruited its founding team from a wide range of industries. It describes a strategy of high vertical integration, owning the key stages of the product life cycle, and says the pump, the sensor and the closed-loop algorithms are all developed in-house.

Yang still leads the business: a company press release distributed in July 2026 names him as founder and chief executive.

TouchCare Nano: pump, sensor, algorithm.

Medtrum sells its products under the TouchCare name. The TouchCare Nano pump is a tubeless patch pump worn on the body, which the company says is designed for up to three days of insulin delivery and can be run from a smartphone through its EasyPatch app or from a dedicated handset. The Nano CGM is a continuous glucose monitor that the company describes as a real-time, 14-day sensor. The two are designed to work alone or together; combined with the company’s own APGO algorithm and an “AutoMode” function, they form the TouchCare Nano automated insulin delivery system.

The software keeps changing. In April 2026 Drug Delivery Business News reported that Medtrum had promoted an “Auto Meal Handling” feature, which lets users log a meal rather than count carbohydrates, with the system adjusting insulin delivery to glucose trends. The same report noted that the pump can be operated from a phone without a separate handset. Two further apps share data: EasyFollow, for family members and carers, and EasyView, for reports to clinicians.

Model names show the line’s development. Drug Delivery Business News, reporting in February 2024, referred to earlier A6 and A7+ TouchCare devices and said Medtrum had developed its product into the Nano A8 version; the company’s Chinese website presents an A8 TouchCare system.

Capacity is the latest step. In July 2026 Medtrum said it was moving toward a German launch of a 300-unit version of its tubeless pump, after showing it at the DDG diabetes congress in Berlin under the theme “Medtrum macht mehr möglich” (“Medtrum makes more possible”) and having it listed in the German statutory health insurers’ directory of medical aids. At the time of that announcement the German launch had not taken place; the company said the 300-unit pump was already sold in selected other markets.

Design and documentation.

Diabetes device makers sell small things that people wear, carry or use many times a day: continuous glucose monitors worn on the upper arm or the belly, insulin pumps and tubeless patch pumps, blood-glucose meters with their test strips, and the pen needles and syringes used for injections. Their brand worlds are built around those objects, and increasingly around the data the objects produce.

A typical presentation pairs a close-up of a sensor or pump on skin with a phone screen showing a glucose graph and trend arrows. Apps and watch faces have become as central as the hardware: sensor makers describe readings sent wirelessly to phones, shared with family members and passed to insulin pumps, and that connection between devices is often the story the brand tells.

Photography in the category tends to be bright and active, with runners, swimmers, parents and children, while meter-and-strip brands lean on clean packshots of the meter, the strip pot and the lancing device. Regulation shapes the words as much as the pictures: product names come with indications, approval dates and age ranges, and marketing copy stays within what regulators such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have cleared.

The industry meets at medical congresses such as the American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Sessions, the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the ATTD conference on advanced technologies and treatments for diabetes, where new devices and study results are presented to clinicians. This guide sets out what can be checked about each maker — who founded it, who owns it, where it says its products are made and what regulators have said — and marks clearly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Medtrum

A tubeless pump in a contested field.

Medtrum’s patch pump puts it in the same product category as Insulet’s Omnipod, and the two companies have met in court in Europe. Drug Delivery Business News, citing the specialist outlet JUVE Patent, reported in July 2023 that the Judicial Court of Paris had found Medtrum’s newest pump-base and patch-reservoir models infringed an Insulet patent and ordered a recall of the Nano TouchCare pumps sold in France, with patients already using them exempted; a court in Düsseldorf had earlier found that Medtrum’s A7+ model infringed the same patent. In February 2024 the same outlet reported a second Paris ruling, on a different Insulet patent, which found that the A6 and A7+ devices infringed through their use in clinical trials; the court rejected Insulet’s request to have the devices destroyed. Those models were never brought to market, the report said.

The company says its pump and sensor have entered countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Spain and Sweden. Its own exhibitor text for the Diabetes UK Professional Conference says its pumps and sensors are available through the NHS in the UK; that is the company’s statement.

Its language is consistent: it describes itself as “dedicated to simplifying the management of diabetes,” a line Drug Delivery Business News has quoted, and its product and app names are built from a few short words: Touch, Nano and Easy.

For a design guide, Medtrum shows a brand built on miniaturisation and a family of plain, repeated product words. Compare Insulet, the patch-pump maker it has faced in court, and Tandem Diabetes Care, another pump maker built around phone control. For this guide we use a patch graphite, a signal violet and a soft linen with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
