Human Made Brand Guidelines
The future is in the past.

Two constants: a vintage-Americana palette and a retro slab register. Abstract homage — not the Human Made wordmark or its heart logo.
The future is in the past
Human Made mines vintage Americana for a modern label.
Human Made is a lesson in nostalgia as a design engine. Founded in 2010 by NIGO (Tomoaki Nagao) in Tokyo, the independent label lives by the motto “The Future Is In The Past” — mining mid-century American workwear, sportswear and cartoon graphics and rebuilding them with obsessive Japanese craft.
Its brand identity is vintage, playful and craft-driven — retro-Americana silhouettes, heavyweight fabrics, and a signature heart motif alongside a cast of mascots. The result reads like a lovingly reissued past: workwear, varsity and Americana, made new.
(Honest notes: NIGO founded and previously owned A Bathing Ape (BAPE) but sold it in 2011 — he no longer owns BAPE. Since 2021 he has also been artistic director of Kenzo, which is a separate employer, not an owner of Human Made. SK8THING, who also works on Cav Empt, contributes graphics. And there’s no official brand hex, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.)
Colour
Human Made lives in vintage Americana. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Human Made’s identity is vintage, warm and Americana — a heart red, a navy, a mustard, an ink, and a cream. The palette leans on a heart red with navy and mustard on cream — the register of varsity felt, workwear labels and faded sportswear. It signals nostalgia, warmth and craft rather than futurism. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a vintage-Americana palette signals warmth and nostalgia. Human Made’s world is a reissued past. For designers, it is a reminder that a heart red, a navy and a mustard on cream read as heritage and play at once — right for a brand that rebuilds the twentieth century with care. The takeaways: anchor with cream and navy; let a heart red lead; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using ink for small text so the red stays warm.
Typography
The register is a retro slab — warm and characterful.
Human Made’s identity carries a vintage, warm, characterful spirit — Americana workwear and cartoon graphics. A retro slab serif captures the mood: it is sturdy and friendly, the register of old sport lettering and workwear labels. Set in vintage Americana, the slab feels warm and characterful — exactly the personality Human Made carries. It is nostalgic rather than sleek, mirroring a reissued varsity piece. (Human Made’s real wordmark and its heart logo are trademarks we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact brand typeface is not ours to use.) Because the mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a retro slab spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: vintage, warm and characterful.

Nostalgia as identity
Human Made stands for craft-driven nostalgia.
Human Made is a lesson in making nostalgia the identity. A vintage-Americana palette, a heart motif and obsessively reissued workwear turn the past into the whole brand — warm, playful, meticulously made. The nostalgia is the differentiator. The differentiator is a vintage, craft-driven, Americana identity.
For designers and brand-builders, Human Made offers a clear takeaway: a considered past can be a brand. The lessons: mine heritage with genuine craft; anchor with warm Americana colour; and let a simple motif (a heart) carry affection. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: NIGO no longer owns BAPE, Kenzo is a separate role, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Human Made made the past the brand — proof that nostalgia can be the difference.
