An animal in every bottle

Zoologist paints animals in scent.

Zoologist is a lesson in illustration as the whole brand. Founded in 2013 in Toronto by Victor Wong — a former video-game artist — it makes each fragrance the portrait of a specific animal, telling its story and character in scent: Bat, Civet, Nightingale, Hummingbird, Squid, Rhinoceros, Tyrannosaurus Rex and dozens more.

Its design signature is unmistakable: every bottle carries a richly illustrated animal portrait — regal creatures in near-Victorian, storybook, natural-history style — created by illustrator Daisy Chan (Wong supplies the concept; Chan illustrates). The bottles, with leather-topped caps, are explicitly collectible. Wong works as a curator, commissioning independent perfumers per animal — an anthology model that has earned Zoologist Art & Olfaction Award recognition.

(Honest notes: Zoologist is a genuinely independent, founder-owned indie — no conglomerate, no PE — and it is vegan and cruelty-free, using synthetic materials in place of natural animalic musks. Colours vary per animal, so there’s no single brand palette or official hex.)

Colour

Zoologist lives in rich, varied tones. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Zoologist’s identity is rich, artistic and varied — a deep teal, an amber, a plum, a cream, and an ink. Rather than one house colour, Zoologist uses rich, varied per-animal palettes drawn from each illustrated portrait. It signals an artistic, storytelling, collectible indie rather than a uniform luxury look. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is rich, varied palettes suit a storytelling anthology. Zoologist’s world is an illustrated natural-history cabinet. For designers, it is a reminder that when each product is its own story (an animal), the palette can vary per product — held together by a consistent illustration style — rather than a single brand colour. The takeaways: let each product carry its own rich colourway; unify with a consistent illustration language; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a deep teal for small text so the palette stays rich.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a storybook serif — artistic and characterful.

Zoologist’s identity carries an artistic, characterful, storytelling spirit — richly illustrated animal portraits over rich, varied colour. A characterful, storybook serif captures the mood: it is expressive and a little vintage, the register of a natural-history anthology. Set against rich per-animal tones, the serif feels artistic and characterful — exactly the illustrated-portrait personality Zoologist carries. It is expressive rather than clinical, mirroring hand-illustrated labels. (Zoologist’s real labels and artwork — illustrated by Daisy Chan — are trademarks and trade dress we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not published, so we don’t assert it.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a storybook serif spirit,” not the Zoologist logo. The type behaves like the brand: artistic, characterful and storytelling.

04

Illustration as identity

Zoologist stands for the illustrated animal portrait.

Zoologist is a lesson in illustration carrying an entire brand. Each scent is an animal, each bottle a collectible illustrated portrait, and the house runs as a curated anthology of independent perfumers. The artwork isn’t decoration — it’s the product’s identity. The differentiator is illustration-led, storytelling design.

For designers and brand-builders, Zoologist offers a clear takeaway: a consistent illustration language can unify an anthology. The lessons: make the artwork the identity (not a logo); let each product tell its own story with its own colourway; and use a curator model to bring in varied makers under one visual language. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Zoologist is a founder-owned indie (not conglomerate-owned), vegan and cruelty-free, with per-animal palettes rather than a single brand colour — so any hex here is an unofficial interpretation. Zoologist painted animals in scent — proof that illustration can be the difference.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Zoologist’s visual identity; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Zoologist Perfumes. The Zoologist name, labels and artwork are trademarks and trade dress of their respective owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches), not Zoologist assets, and no label or illustration is reproduced. Facts reported from public sources (BeautyMatter, Zoologist official, Fragrantica, Art and Olfaction Awards): Zoologist Perfumes was founded in 2013 (first fragrances 2014) in Toronto by Victor Wong, a former video-game artist, on a concept of portraying a specific animal in each fragrance (Bat, Civet, Nightingale, Hummingbird, Squid, Tyrannosaurus Rex and dozens more); its design signature is a richly illustrated animal-portrait label by illustrator Daisy Chan, on collectible bottles with leather-topped caps, with Wong acting as a curator who commissions independent perfumers per animal. Honest notes: Zoologist is an independent, founder-owned indie (no conglomerate or private-equity ownership) and is vegan and cruelty-free (using synthetic materials in place of natural animalic musks); colours vary per animal, so there is no single brand palette; and no official brand hex is published, so colours are an unofficial interpretation.
