The Dwindle deck brand

Almost Skateboards is Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song’s deck brand, from 2003, distributed by Dwindle Distribution.

Almost Skateboards brings the stable round its Dwindle brand — the technical, invention-minded deck company founded in 2003 by Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, distributed by Dwindle Distribution. Almost makes and sells the decks, and its answer to a round about stables is that it belongs to Dwindle, a house whose own ownership has changed hands. A brand, stabled.

Its identity is the Dwindle deck brand. The Mullen-and-Daewon founding, the 2003 date and the Dwindle stable are the story here. A brand, stabled. The Dwindle deck brand.

(Honest notes, so the house is placed, and its ownership stays hedged. Almost Skateboards sells skateboard decks as its heroes — often technical, construction-forward decks — and we report its performance language as the brand’s own. It was founded in 2003 by Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, and is based in El Segundo, California. On who runs it, the star theme of this round, it is distributed by Dwindle Distribution; Dwindle itself has changed hands, and we report its current ownership carefully: Globe International sold Dwindle in 2019, and it is described as owned since then by Transom Capital Group — a point we could confirm only from an encyclopedic source, not a company release, so we hold it as reported rather than certain. We could not confirm the currency of Almost’s Dwindle distribution to the present year from a hard datestamp, so we describe it as distributed by Dwindle while flagging that the present arrangement is not freshly confirmed. Its designs are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Almost lives in a tech violet. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Almost’s identity is stabled, technical and invention-minded — a tech violet, an ink, a pale iris, a deep indigo, and a paper. The palette leans tech violet and pale iris: a technical register that nods to the brand’s construction-forward, inventive world rather than a loud logo colour. It signals a Dwindle deck brand. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a tech violet signals a stabled, technical identity. Almost’s world is an inventive deck in the Dwindle stable. For designers, it is a reminder that a tech violet and a soft pale iris can carry a skate brand — a technical tone held as colour not as a graphic. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: credit Mullen and Daewon; name Dwindle as the house; report Dwindle’s ownership as reported; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a Dwindle sans — stabled, plain, technical.

Almost’s identity carries a stabled, plain, technical spirit — a deck brand within a stable, not a graphics label. A Dwindle sans captures the mood: clean, exact and confident, the register of an inventive skate brand. Set in a tech-violet palette, the Dwindle sans feels stabled and technical — exactly the personality Almost carries. It is a made deck rather than a logo, mirroring maple veneer. (Almost’s real decks, graphics and logo are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a Dwindle-sans brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: stabled, plain and technical.

The stable

Almost Skateboards stands for the Dwindle deck brand.

Almost Skateboards brings the stable round its Dwindle brand. A tech-violet palette, a Dwindle sans and a 2003 founding make one thing — the Dwindle deck brand — the whole identity: stabled, technical and invention-minded. The Dwindle stable is the pitch, and the Mullen-and-Daewon founding is the proof. The point is an inventive deck in a house whose own ownership has shifted, in a round about stables.

Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, house placed and its ownership hedged. A maker in this spirit would credit Mullen and Daewon, name Dwindle as the house, and report Dwindle’s ownership as reported rather than certain. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Almost Skateboards sells skateboard decks as its heroes, often technical ones; it was founded in 2003 by Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, in El Segundo, California; it is distributed by Dwindle Distribution; Dwindle was sold by Globe International in 2019 and is described as owned since then by Transom Capital Group, which we hold as reported from an encyclopedic source rather than confirmed from a company release; and we could not freshly confirm the present-year currency of Almost’s Dwindle distribution, so we flag it. Almost closes the round’s house-stabled brands, before the independents. The honest editorial moves are to date it to 2003, to credit the founders, to name Dwindle, and to report Dwindle’s ownership as reported and not freshly confirmed.

For designers and brand-builders, Almost continues the stable: report a changed-hands house as reported — and flag what you cannot freshly confirm. The lessons: let an inventive deck carry a stable identity; credit its founders; name a distribution house whose ownership has shifted; report that ownership as sourced rather than certain, and flag stale datestamps; and never reproduce a mark. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Almost Skateboards is Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song’s deck brand, from 2003, distributed by Dwindle Distribution — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Read that way, Almost is less a deck than a Dwindle brand: stabled, technical, inventive. The lesson for a brand is that credited founders and a carefully-hedged house reinforce each other, and flagging the unconfirmed keeps the story earned. Almost made the-Dwindle-deck-brand the identity — proof that the stable carries the round.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Almost Skateboards’ visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Almost or Dwindle Distribution. The Almost name and its designs are IP of their owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and maple-veneer texture swatches); no deck, graphic or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public record (Wikipedia and the brand): Almost Skateboards sells skateboard decks as its heroes; founded 2003 by Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, in El Segundo, California; distributed by Dwindle Distribution. Honest notes: ⚠ Dwindle was sold by Globe International in 2019 and is described as owned since then by Transom Capital Group — reported from an encyclopedic source, not a company release, so held as reported rather than certain; ⚠ the present-year currency of Almost’s Dwindle distribution could not be freshly confirmed (last hard datestamp ~2014) and is flagged; it is disambiguated as “Almost Skateboards” because “Almost” is a common word; all performance language is the brand’s own. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
