Man’s best friend

Bulldog made natural men’s skincare mainstream.

Bulldog is a lesson in making a new category approachable. It was founded in 2006 (reaching UK retail in 2007) by Simon Duffy and Rhodri Ferrier, starting in a spare room in West London. It became one of the first dedicated men’s skincare brands to reach the mainstream — sold in Boots and supermarkets, not just specialist shops.

Its positioning is natural, ethical and unintimidating. Bulldog formulates without artificial colours, synthetic fragrances or SLS, is cruelty-free (Leaping Bunny) and vegan, and fronts it all with a friendly bulldog mascot — “man’s best friend” made into a grooming brand. Its flagship Original Moisturiser and Original Face Wash anchor a line spanning beard, sensitive and age-defence ranges.

Bulldog is also a sustainability mover: it says it was the first men’s skincare brand to use sugarcane-derived plastic tubes (2019). It has been owned by Edgewell Personal Care since 2016, joining a portfolio that includes Jack Black, Schick, Cremo and Billie. (Honest notes: it was founded in 2006, reaching retail in 2007 (not 2005, a stray date in some write-ups); it is owned by Edgewell (since 2016), not independent, and there’s no verified private-equity interim owner; its core packaging is white with a green accent (Original line), not a grey brand; its sustainability and carbon figures are brand claims, best attributed; and no official brand hex is published.)

Bulldog lives in a white-and-green palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Bulldog’s identity is clean, natural and approachable — a clean white ground, a botanical green, a charcoal, a mid-grey, and a soft sage tint. The palette reads like an unintimidating natural product: white packaging banded with green for the Original line, grounded by charcoal type. It signals accessible, ethical men’s skincare rather than clinical luxury or macho posturing. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a white-and-green palette signals approachable natural skincare. Bulldog’s world reads as clean and friendly. For designers, it is a reminder that a white ground with one botanical green accent conveys natural, unintimidating care, matching a brand that made men’s skincare feel normal. The takeaways: use white with a botanical green for approachable natural care; keep the mascot friendly; and treat any single hex as unofficial when there is no published spec.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a friendly sans — approachable and clean.

Bulldog’s identity carries an approachable, clean, friendly spirit — a “BULLDOG” wordmark and bulldog mascot whose plain, warm forms match an unintimidating men’s skincare brand. A friendly grotesque sans captures the mood: it is clean and approachable, the register of an everyday natural product rather than luxury or macho branding. Set against a white-and-green palette, the friendly sans feels accessible and honest — exactly the man’s-best-friend personality Bulldog carries. It is friendly rather than aggressive (a deliberate softening from an earlier, harder look), mirroring a brand made to lower the barrier to skincare. (Bulldog’s real wordmark and mascot are trademarks we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not something we assert.) Because the specific marks are not ours to use, the honest description is “a friendly sans spirit,” not the Bulldog logo. The type behaves like the brand: approachable, clean and friendly.

Approachability as the difference

Bulldog stands for accessible skincare.

Bulldog is a lesson in normalising a category. When men’s skincare was still niche and often intimidating, Bulldog made it approachable — a friendly mascot, natural and ethical formulas, plain language, and mass-retail availability at everyday prices. That accessibility, not luxury or hype, is exactly why it helped bring men’s skincare into the mainstream and grew big enough for Edgewell to acquire. Lowering the barrier was the whole strategy, and the bulldog made it feel human.

For designers and brand-builders, Bulldog offers a clear takeaway: approachability can grow a whole category. The lessons: use a warm, human device (a mascot) to make an intimidating category feel normal; keep the values clear (natural, cruelty-free) and the products accessible; and design for reassurance, not exclusivity. It is also a reminder to keep the facts honest: Bulldog was founded in 2006 by Simon Duffy and Rhodri Ferrier, is cruelty-free and vegan, and has been owned by Edgewell since 2016 — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Bulldog made skincare approachable — proof that accessibility can be the difference.
