Atlas Brand Guidelines
The US family independent.

Two constants: an Atlas-teal palette and a family-sans register. Abstract homage — not an Atlas product or mark; no train, tie or logo is reproduced.
The US family independent
Atlas is the New Jersey model-railroad company founded in 1924 as the Atlas Tool Company — still run by the founding Schaffan-Haedrich family, and known as much for its track as its trains.
Atlas follows Märklin as the round’s family-independent node — a New Jersey model-railroad company still run by its founding family, owned by no conglomerate. Its answer to a round about who owns model trains is the independent one: a family firm on its own.
Its identity is the US family independent. The 1924 Atlas Tool Company origin, the family ownership and the signature track are the story here. On its own. The US family independent.
(Honest notes, so the founding, the ownership, the products and a name correction are framed accurately. Atlas sells model trains and track as its heroes; we report its language as the brand’s own. On founding: Atlas Model Railroad Company was founded in 1924 by Stephan Schaffan Sr., a Czechoslovakian immigrant, as the Atlas Tool Company in a Newark garage, and its longtime home is Hillside, New Jersey, where the 1947 factory sits, so we place the founding in Newark and the base in Hillside. On ownership: it is privately held and family-run by the Schaffan-Haedrich family, with President Diane, Chairman Tom Haedrich, and later-generation family in leadership, and no parent. On a name correction: we do not write “Thomas Schaffan,” which would conflate the chairman Tom Haedrich with the Schaffan surname. On products: N, HO and O scale, with a signature track line including Flex Track. Its designs and the Atlas name are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)
Colour
Atlas lives in an Atlas teal. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Atlas’ identity is independent, family and track-known — an Atlas teal, an ink, a pale aqua, a deep teal, and a paper. The palette leans Atlas teal and deep teal: a clean, workmanlike register that stands in for a family model-railroad company rather than a loud logo colour. It signals the US family independent — independent, family and track-known. The honest caveat: with no official brand hex, and a blue-and-red logo, these values are a workmanlike, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.
The lesson is an Atlas teal signals an independent, family identity. Atlas’ world is the layout track and the locomotive. For designers, it is a reminder that a clean teal and a pale aqua can carry an independent, family brand — a workmanlike tone held as an accent, not a product shot. Because a mid hue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: date the founding to 1924 and Newark and place the base in Hillside; keep the ownership family-independent; correct the “Thomas Schaffan” name; and note the signature track line.
Typography
The register is a family sans — independent, family, track-known.
Atlas’ identity carries an independent, family spirit — a founding-family firm still on its own. A family sans captures the mood: clean, sturdy and plain, the register of a family model-railroad company. Set in an Atlas-teal palette, the family sans feels dependable and workmanlike — exactly the personality Atlas carries. It behaves like a made, working thing rather than a loud logo, mirroring a tie-dot and a loco-band. (Atlas’ real products and the name are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a family-sans brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: independent, family and track-known.

The model-train node
Atlas stands for the US family independent.
Atlas sits fifth in the round as its family-independent node. An Atlas-teal palette, a family sans and a 1924 founding make one thing — the US family independent — the whole identity: independent, family and track-known. The Atlas Tool Company origin is the pitch, the family ownership is the frame, and the signature track is the substance. The point is a family firm on its own, in a round about who owns model trains.
Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, the base placed and the name corrected. A brand in this spirit would date the founding to 1924 and Newark and place the base in Hillside, keep the ownership family-independent, correct the “Thomas Schaffan” name, and note the signature track line. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Atlas makes trains and track; it was founded in 1924 as the Atlas Tool Company; it is run by the Schaffan-Haedrich family; and it has no parent. Atlas sits after Märklin and before Kato. The honest editorial moves are to date the founding, to place the base, to correct the name, and to note the track.
For designers and brand-builders, Atlas carries the model-train node: keep a founding family accurate — and don’t merge a married-in name with the founder’s. The lessons: a company can stay independent under its founding family, here Atlas; a founding is dated to 1924 by Stephan Schaffan Sr. as the Atlas Tool Company in a Newark garage, with Hillside, New Jersey the longtime home from the 1947 factory; an ownership is kept accurate, that Atlas is privately held and family-run by the Schaffan-Haedrich family, with President Diane and Chairman Tom Haedrich, and no parent; a name is corrected, that we do not write “Thomas Schaffan,” which would conflate the chairman Tom Haedrich with the Schaffan surname; a product is noted, the signature track line including Flex Track across N, HO and O scale; and a trap is kept, that Atlas Model Railroad Company is unrelated to other “Atlas” firms and began as the Atlas Tool Company. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Atlas is the family-independent maker of the model-train aisle — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. The hook is that independence: Atlas is the US family independent, the New Jersey model-railroad company founded in 1924 as the Atlas Tool Company, still run by the founding Schaffan-Haedrich family, and known as much for its track as its trains. Read that way, Atlas is less a single train than the US family independent: independent, family, track-known. The lesson for a brand is that keeping a founding family accurate and not merging a married-in name with the founder’s reinforce the honesty, and dating the founding keeps it earned. Atlas made the-US-family-independent the identity — proof that a family firm can anchor a node.
