The carbon ski, built in the USA

DPS is the independent Salt Lake City ski maker that pioneered carbon-fibre skis and builds its premium line in its own American factory.

DPS follows Capita as the round’s American-maker node — the independent Salt Lake City company that helped pioneer the carbon-fibre ski and still presses its premium skis in its own US factory. Its answer to a round about who owns the mountain’s gear and where it is made is a reshoring one: a founder-controlled brand that builds its high-end skis at home, in Utah, and outsources only its entry line.

Its identity is the carbon ski, built in the USA. The carbon-fibre pioneering, the US manufacturing and the PHANTOM base treatment are the story here. Pressed in Utah. The carbon ski, built in the USA.

(Honest notes, so the founders, the making and one claim are framed accurately. DPS sells premium skis as its heroes — its carbon constructions and its PHANTOM permanent base treatment among them; we report its language as the brand’s own. On origin: DPS was founded in 2005 by Stephan Drake and Peter Turner — two founders, not one — with the name derived from “Drake PowderworkS,” and it is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, where it relocated in 2013. On ownership: DPS is private and founder-controlled, having taken only a small early seed and no acquisition. On where it is made, split by product: DPS builds its premium carbon skis — its Pure3 construction, now moving to a new Alchemist layup — in the USA, at its own Salt Lake City factory, marketed as built in the USA with mostly US-sourced materials; its lower-priced Foundation line is manufactured overseas at a location the company does not disclose, so we name no country for it. On one claim: PHANTOM is a permanent, one-time base treatment that DPS says eliminates the need for waxing, which we attribute to the brand rather than assert. Its designs and the DPS name are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

DPS’s identity is premium, pioneering and US-made — a carbon violet, an ink, a pale violet, a deep violet, and a paper. The palette leans carbon violet and pale violet: a refined, technical register that nods to carbon-fibre and a premium, engineered pitch rather than a loud logo colour. It signals the carbon ski, built in the USA — premium, pioneering and US-made. The honest caveat: with no official brand hex, these values are a technical, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a deep violet signals a premium, technical identity. DPS’s world is the carbon ski, pressed at home. For designers, it is a reminder that a deep violet and a soft pale can carry a premium, engineering-led brand — a refined tone held as an accent, not a product shot. Because a mid hue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: credit DPS for pioneering carbon skis; name both founders and the “Drake PowderworkS” origin; state the split making — carbon in the USA, Foundation overseas at an undisclosed location; and attribute the PHANTOM waxless claim.

Typography

The register is a carbon sans — premium, pioneering, US-made.

DPS’s identity carries a premium, pioneering, US-made spirit — a founder-controlled specialist that builds at home, not an outsourcer. A carbon sans captures the mood: clean, technical and precise, the register of a materials-led maker. Set in a carbon-violet palette, the carbon sans feels premium and technical — exactly the personality DPS carries. It behaves like a made, engineered thing rather than a loud logo, mirroring an edge-band and a fall-line arc. (DPS’s real products and the name are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a carbon-sans brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: premium, pioneering and US-made.

The snow node

DPS stands for the carbon ski, built in the USA.

DPS sits sixth in the round as its American-maker node. A carbon-violet palette, a carbon sans and a pioneering history make one thing — the carbon ski, built in the USA — the whole identity: premium, pioneering and US-made. The carbon-fibre innovation is the pitch, the US factory is the pride, and the PHANTOM treatment is the twist. The point is a founder-controlled maker that presses its premium skis at home, in a round about who owns the mountain’s gear and where it is made.

Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, the founders named and the making split honestly. A brand in this spirit would credit DPS for pioneering carbon skis, name both founders and the “Drake PowderworkS” origin, split the making between the US and overseas without naming an undisclosed country, and attribute the PHANTOM claim. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: DPS sells premium carbon skis and the PHANTOM base treatment as its heroes; it was founded in 2005 by Stephan Drake and Peter Turner, its name from “Drake PowderworkS,” headquartered in Salt Lake City since 2013; it is private and founder-controlled, with only a small early seed and no acquisition; it builds its carbon skis in the USA at its own Salt Lake City factory and outsources its Foundation line overseas at an undisclosed location; and PHANTOM is a permanent base treatment DPS says removes the need to wax. DPS sits after Capita and before Arbor. The honest editorial moves are to credit the innovation, to name both founders, to split the making honestly, and to attribute the claim.

For designers and brand-builders, DPS carries the snow node: split a manufacturing story honestly — US where true, undisclosed where unknown. The lessons: a brand can build its premium tier at home while outsourcing an entry line, and the two are told apart rather than blurred into a single “made in” claim; two founders are both named, and a much-misread acronym, DPS from “Drake PowderworkS,” is explained rather than guessed; an undisclosed overseas factory is left unnamed rather than assigned a country; and a bold product claim, a permanent waxless base, is attributed to the company. It is also a reminder to stay precise: DPS is the independent Salt Lake City maker of US-built carbon skis and the PHANTOM treatment — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. The hook is that reshoring: while much of the ski world moved production overseas, DPS designs and presses its premium carbon skis in its own Utah factory, and reinvented ski maintenance with a one-time waxless treatment. Read that way, DPS is less a single ski than the carbon ski, built in the USA: premium, pioneering, US-made. The lesson for a brand is that splitting the making honestly and naming both founders reinforce each other, and attributing the claim keeps the story earned. DPS made the-carbon-ski-built-in-the-USA the identity — proof that an honest, split manufacturing story can anchor a node.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about DPS’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, DPS. The DPS name and its designs are IP of their owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and edge-band / fall-line texture swatches); no ski, base or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported: DPS was founded in 2005 by Stephan Drake AND Peter Turner (two founders; “DPS” = “Drake PowderworkS”), headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah (relocated there 2013); it is private and founder-controlled (only a small early seed round; no acquisition); it pioneered prepreg carbon-fibre skis and makes the PHANTOM permanent base treatment. Honest notes: DPS builds its premium carbon skis (Pure3, now moving to Alchemist) in the USA at its own Salt Lake City factory (marketed “Built in the USA,” ~95% US materials); its entry Foundation line is manufactured overseas at a location the company does not disclose (no country is asserted); PHANTOM’s “never wax again” benefit is the company’s claim (“DPS says”), attributed rather than asserted. The DPS marks are protected. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
