Fjällräven Brand Guidelines
An Arctic fox and a boxy backpack — Swedish outdoor gear built to last, and named for the animal it protects.
An abstract backpack — the Kånken idea, not the fox. Deliberately not the Fjällräven fox.
Named for a fox of the far north
Fjällräven’s identity is rooted in the Arctic.
Fjällräven’s name and logo both come from the same place: “Fjällräven” is Swedish for “Arctic fox,” and the brand’s emblem is a curled Arctic fox. It’s a perfect emblem for a Swedish outdoor brand — the Arctic fox is a small, hardy, resourceful animal perfectly adapted to survive in harsh, cold, wild environments, which is exactly what the company’s rugged gear is designed to do. The logo (rendered in red, not blue — a common point of confusion, since Fjällräven’s most famous product colourway is the “UN Blue” Kånken, but the fox mark itself is red) roots the brand instantly in nature, resilience and the far north. Our homage nods to the brand’s famous backpack rather than the fox.
Built by a man who slept outside
Fjällräven has genuine outdoor authenticity.
The brand’s credibility is entirely earned. Fjällräven was founded in 1960 by Åke Nordin in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden — reportedly starting in his family’s basement — a genuine outdoorsman who designed gear to solve real problems he encountered in the Swedish wilderness. Like Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard elsewhere in this series, Nordin was an actual user of the outdoors building better equipment for people like himself, and that authenticity is central to the brand. Fjällräven isn’t a fashion label that discovered nature; it’s a nature company that solved real problems — a frame backpack inspired by Nordin’s own frustrations, durable waxed G-1000 fabric, gear meant to last for decades. That honest, functional heritage gives the fox real weight.
The Kånken
One boxy backpack made the brand famous.
Fjällräven’s single most iconic product — and, like Ray-Ban’s frames or Coca-Cola’s bottle, effectively a logo in its own right — is the Kånken backpack, launched in 1978. Its simple, boxy, practical design (the name comes from the Swedish kånka, “to carry”) was originally created to help schoolchildren carry books without back strain, and it became a global icon — instantly recognisable by its squared shape and the small fox logo on the front, produced in a rainbow of colourways. The Kånken is a brilliant example of a product form becoming a brand asset: you can spot a Kånken across a street by its silhouette alone, and its enduring, unfussy design embodies everything Fjällräven stands for — simple, functional, durable, made to be used for years.
Durability as a philosophy
Fjällräven’s whole identity is ‘made to last’.
Everything about Fjällräven — the resilient Arctic-fox emblem, the founder-designer heritage, the boxy timeless Kånken, the tough waxed fabrics — reinforces one coherent brand philosophy: durability, functionality and a deep connection to nature. The brand explicitly champions timeless design and long-lasting gear over disposable fashion, encouraging people to buy things that will serve them for decades and to care for and repair them. It’s the outdoor-equipment equivalent of Patagonia’s ethos: make it good, make it last, respect the environment.
That coherence and authenticity are the brand’s real strength. In a world of fast, disposable consumer goods, Fjällräven’s commitment to durable, functional, timeless design — embodied in a hardy little fox and an unchanging boxy backpack — is genuinely differentiating and increasingly valued. The lesson is a familiar and powerful one: a brand built on real substance, an authentic founder story, and a consistent, honest philosophy earns a durable loyalty that marketing alone cannot buy. Fjällräven means what its fox implies — resilient, adapted, built to survive — and it has expressed that same idea faithfully, through the same emblem and the same timeless products, for over sixty years. Named for an animal that endures the harshest conditions, the brand made endurance its entire identity, and asked its customers to value the same.
Type & the wordmark
A sturdy, honest, outdoor wordmark.
Fjällräven’s wordmark is sturdy and honest — clean lettering that pairs with the fox. The specimen below stands in with a strong sans.
Nature is waiting
Sturdy, honest, functional — type as durable as the gear. (Specimen set in Archivo, a neutral stand-in.)
Fox red & nature
The red fox mark, with earthy tones. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
The Fjällräven fox is red ≈ #B4231F (a reconstruction; no single official published value), joined by earthy blues, browns and greens across its products — and the famous Kånken “UN Blue” is a product colourway, not the brand colour. Lead with the fox red below.
