Pirastro Brand Guidelines
Two centuries of strings — from Baroque gut to Evah Pirazzi, handmade in Germany since 1798.

Two constants: a gold-and-gut palette and a heritage serif. Abstract homage — not the Pirastro wordmark or packaging.
Two centuries of strings
Pirastro spans gut to synthetic.
Pirastro is a lesson in continuity and reinvention across centuries. It traces to 1798 (its own tagline reads “Strings Handmade in Germany since 1798”), founded by Giorgio Pirazzi, a merchant from Piedmont — so the founding family is Italian in origin, though the company became German by location, based in Offenbach am Main. (A myth-correcting note: “Pirastro” is best understood as an Italianized, contracted form of the surname “Pirazzi,” not the folk-etymology “Pirazzi + astro/strings.”) It is one of the oldest string makers in the world, with a deep gut-string heritage.
The remarkable thing is the range across time. Pirastro spans the entire material history of strings: pure gut (Chorda, for Baroque and historical performance), wound gut (Oliv, Eudoxa, Gold Label), modern gut (Passione), synthetic core (Obligato, Tonica and the flagship Evah Pirazzi), steel (Flexocor, Chromcor) and now advanced PEEK polymer cores. The modern icon is Evah Pirazzi (launched around 2001, named for the founding family) — a powerful, high-projection synthetic-core violin string that became a leading professional choice and the major rival to Thomastik-Infeld’s Dominant (with Evah Pirazzi Gold and Neo variants).
Pirastro remains a family business, independent, still in Offenbach — currently led by Eva Müller-Zierach, a descendant of Gustav Pirazzi (it adopted its GmbH legal form in 2002, which is a corporate-structure date, not a founding date). It makes strings for the whole bowed family — violin, viola, cello, double bass — plus viola da gamba, harp and erhu, and its colored silk color-coding at the string ends is a genuine identifier. (One honest note: use “one of the oldest,” not “the oldest.” No official brand hex or typeface is published.)
Colour
Pirastro lives in a gold-and-gut palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Pirastro’s identity is heritage, German-Italian and warm — an old gold, deep ink and the cream of gut strings. The palette reads as history and craft: the tones of a 200-year string house, from Baroque gut to modern synthetic, warm and dignified. It’s a heritage, classical world that signals age, craft and the bowed string. It’s a gold-and-gut palette that signals two centuries of heritage, craft and the professional string. The honest caveat: Pirastro publishes no official brand hex, so the gold, ink and gut-cream here are an original, unofficial interpretation of its products, not first-party values.
The lesson is a warm heritage palette signals age and continuity. Pirastro’s classical world reads as historic and crafted. For designers, it’s a reminder that warm, aged tones — old gold, gut-cream — can express deep continuity and tradition. The takeaways: use warm aged tones for heritage; let continuity read as craft; and treat specific hexes as unofficial when there’s no published spec.
Typography
The wordmark is a heritage serif — classical and warm.
Pirastro’s identity carries a classical, heritage, warm spirit — a “Pirastro” wordmark whose traditional letterforms read as old-world and dignified. A heritage serif captures the mood: it’s classical and warm, matching a string house that traces to 1798. Set against a gold-and-gut palette, the serif feels historic and crafted — exactly the two-centuries, Evah-Pirazzi personality Pirastro carries. It’s traditional and dignified rather than modern or plain, mirroring a gut string wound by hand. (Pirastro’s real wordmark is a trademark we describe but don’t reproduce.) Because the exact wordmark isn’t ours to use, the honest description is “a heritage serif spirit,” not the Pirastro logo. The type behaves like the brand: classical, heritage and warm.

Continuity as the difference
Pirastro never stopped reinventing.
Pirastro is a lesson in continuity paired with constant reinvention. Very few makers of anything survive from 1798 to today — and fewer still stay at the top by changing what they make the whole way. Pirastro carried gut string-making from the Baroque era straight through to the present, but it never froze: it added wound gut, then modern gut, then synthetic cores, then steel, and now PEEK polymers, and it produced a modern flagship (Evah Pirazzi) that competes at the very front of the professional field. Two centuries of heritage give it authority; two centuries of reinvention keep it relevant. The lesson is that longevity isn’t about standing still — the brands that last for centuries are the ones that honour their craft while continuously updating its materials and methods, so heritage becomes a foundation for the future rather than a museum. Anyone can be old; Pirastro stayed old and current. Pair continuity with reinvention, and two centuries become the difference.
For designers and brand-builders, Pirastro offers a clear takeaway: heritage plus reinvention is what lasts. The lessons: honour the craft (gut string-making since 1798); keep updating the materials (synthetic, steel, PEEK, Evah Pirazzi); and keep the facts precise — Pirastro traces to 1798, is based in Offenbach, and Evah Pirazzi is its modern flagship. It’s also a reminder to keep it honest: the founder Giorgio Pirazzi was Italian (the company German by location); “Pirastro” is an Italianized form of “Pirazzi”; it’s one of the oldest (not “the oldest”); 2002 is a legal-form date, not the founding; and no official brand hex or typeface is published, so the palette and type here are an interpretation. Pirastro never stopped reinventing — proof that continuity can be the difference.
