Sonnenleder Brand Guidelines
Made in Germany.

Two constants: a veg-tan amber palette and an honest sans register. Abstract homage — not a Sonnenleder design or wordmark.
Made in Germany
Sonnenleder is a Lake Constance Manufaktur that handcrafts its goods in Germany from vegetable-pit-tanned leather.
Sonnenleder is a lesson in the cleanest possible answer. A small Manufaktur on Lake Constance, it handcrafts minimalist leather goods in Germany from open-pored, vegetable-tanned hide that ages into a rich patina. Its answer to “where is the leather made?” is the one this whole round is measured against: German hides, tanned in Germany, made up by hand in Germany. A bag whose geography needs no asterisk.
Its identity is the honest German Manufaktur. Sonnenleder’s plant-based, pit-tanned leather, its minimalist forms and its wholly German making are the picture it presents. A place, told without caveat. A workshop whose sustainability story and its geography are the same story.
(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Sonnenleder is a German leather-goods Manufaktur founded in 1986 in Bodman-Ludwigshafen, on Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg; its legal name is Sonnen-Leder GmbH, though the brand is written “Sonnenleder,” one word. Andreas Morgenstern has led the company since 1996. On where it is made we are precise and it is the point: the goods are handcrafted in Germany, and the leather comes from south-German cattle hides, vegetable pit-tanned by regional German tanners over roughly six to twelve weeks in traditional pits. One accuracy note: Sonnenleder makes the finished goods but is not itself the tannery — the pit-tanning is done by regional German tanners — so we credit the tanning to them, not to the brand. Its designs are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex; the palette here is simply the natural tan of the leather, an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Sonnenleder lives in a veg-tan amber palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Sonnenleder’s identity is natural, honest and German — a veg-tan amber, an ink, a honey, a bark brown, and a cream. The palette leans amber and honey: the register of open-pored, vegetable-tanned leather that darkens with use. It signals material honesty over show. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation — and, fittingly, they are just the colour of the leather itself.
The lesson is an amber palette signals a natural, made-in-Germany identity. Sonnenleder’s world is a plant-based, pit-tanned, wholly German object. For designers, it is a reminder that a warm amber and a soft honey can carry a brand whose whole story is the material — the amber of freshly finished veg-tan and the honey of hide that has aged in the hand. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: let the material be the palette; make it where you say; tan it plant-based; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is an honest sans — plain, warm, unadorned.
Sonnenleder’s identity carries a plain, warm, unadorned spirit — an honest object, not a luxury performance. An honest sans captures the mood: even, humane and quiet, the register of a small German Manufaktur. Set in an amber palette, the honest sans feels plain and warm — exactly the personality Sonnenleder carries. It is unadorned rather than showy, mirroring an open-pored leather left to age. (Sonnenleder’s real designs and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “an honest-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the maker: plain, warm and unadorned.

Where the leather is made
Sonnenleder stands for the cleanest possible answer.
Sonnenleder is a lesson in giving the cleanest possible answer. An amber palette, an honest sans and open-pored leather make one fact — German hides, tanned in Germany, made in Germany — the whole maker: natural, honest and unadorned. The clarity is the differentiator. The differentiator is a story with no caveat: a small Manufaktur whose material, tanning and making all happen at home, and whose sustainability and geography are one and the same.
Put to work, the identity is honest geography as design. A maker building in this spirit would keep material, tanning and making close and disclosed, let the natural leather be its palette rather than a trademarked colour, and credit the tanners and the region plainly, so the customer buys a genuinely local, plant-based object. It would treat patina as the point, not a flaw. It would say exactly who tans the hide and where, without borrowing the tanner’s heritage as its own. The lesson Sonnenleder teaches is that the cleanest geography can itself be the brand: the German material gives it integrity, and the honest telling gives it trust. The place is the personality, and the pit-tanned hide is the proof.
For designers and brand-builders, Sonnenleder closes this round about where the leather is made with the answer every other brand is measured against: make it, tan it and source it in one honest place — and say who did what. The lessons: keep the material local; tan it plant-based; credit the tanners; and let the leather be the palette. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Sonnenleder (Sonnen-Leder GmbH) is a German Manufaktur founded in 1986 in Bodman-Ludwigshafen, led by Andreas Morgenstern since 1996, making in Germany from vegetable-pit-tanned German leather — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Sonnenleder made the honest place the maker — proof that the cleanest geography can be the difference.
