The Milan knot

Amini designs rugs in Milan, hand-knotted by artisans in India and Nepal.

Amini is a lesson in a heritage house as the identity. A Milan rug house with roots in the Oriental-carpet trade, it makes contemporary designer rugs — designed in Milan and hand-knotted by artisan weavers in India and Nepal — married to a deep carpet lineage. A rug, designed in Milan and knotted in the East.

Its identity is the Milan knot. Amini’s Milan-designed hand-knots, and its Oriental heritage, are the work it is known for. A house, made a signature. A family with a carpet lineage.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Amini was founded in 1962 by Sultan Amini, and the family’s heritage is rooted in Afghanistan and the wider Oriental-carpet trade — so we describe it as an Oriental-carpet family, not simply Persian. It is family-run, with Milan as its design house and showroom. On where its rugs are woven we are precise: they are hand-knotted and hand-loomed in India and Nepal, with some in Afghanistan, Turkey and Morocco — Milan is design and headquarters, not the loom. It publishes no explicit fair-labour certification, so we describe its stated craft and sustainability values rather than assert one. Its rugs and name are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Amini lives in a sapphire-and-gold palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Amini’s identity is rich, deep and heritage — a sapphire, an ink, a gold, a rust, and a chalk. The palette leans sapphire and gold: the register of a deep jewel tone and a warm metallic. It signals heritage and luxury over show. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a sapphire-and-gold palette signals a rich, heritage identity. Amini’s world is a deep, designer, Oriental-heritage object. For designers, it is a reminder that a jewel blue and a warm gold can carry a brand built on lineage — the sapphire of a heritage house and the gold of a carpet tradition. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: honour the lineage; design in Milan; name where it is woven; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a luxe serif — elegant, deep, heritage.

Amini’s identity carries an elegant, deep, heritage spirit — a rich object, not a plain one. A luxe serif captures the mood: high-contrast, graceful and classical, the register of a Milan-designed Oriental rug. Set in a sapphire-and-gold palette, the luxe serif feels elegant and deep — exactly the personality Amini carries. It is heritage rather than trendy, mirroring a designer hand-knot. (Amini’s real rugs and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a luxe-serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the maker: elegant, deep and heritage.

04

A heritage house as identity

Amini stands for the Milan knot.

Amini is a lesson in making a heritage house the identity. A sapphire-and-gold palette, a luxe serif and Milan-designed hand-knots make a carpet lineage the whole maker — rich, deep and heritage. The lineage is the differentiator. The differentiator is a genuine history — a family rooted in the Oriental-carpet trade, designing in Milan and having its rugs hand-knotted where that craft lives.

Put to work, the identity is a lineage as design. A maker building in this spirit would carry a real carpet heritage forward, design in its home city, and be honest that the weaving happens in India and Nepal, so the customer buys into a house rather than a product. It would separate heritage from present-day making plainly, so that the story stays true. It would pair modern designers with a traditional craft, so that the lineage stays alive. The lesson Amini teaches is that a heritage house can build a brand: the lineage gives it depth, and the honest naming of where it weaves gives it credibility. The house is the personality, and the honesty is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Amini offers a clear takeaway: carry a lineage and name where you weave. The lessons: honour the heritage; design at home; be honest about the loom; and don’t overstate certifications. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Amini is a Milan rug house founded in 1962 by Sultan Amini, with an Oriental-carpet heritage rooted in Afghanistan, designing rugs hand-knotted in India and Nepal — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Amini made the Milan knot the maker — proof that a heritage house can be the difference.
