The multi-platform smart-home lock

Aqara is the Lumi-made, Xiaomi-invested smart-home brand whose locks work across Apple, Google, Alexa and Matter.

Aqara brings the smart-lock round its ecosystem node — a brand whose lock is one node in a whole smart home, and whose selling point is working with everyone. It is operated by Lumi United Technology, a Shenzhen company founded in 2009, with the Aqara brand launched in 2016. Aqara makes and sells the locks, and its answer to a round about who owns these devices needs one clarification: it is Xiaomi-invested, but not Xiaomi-owned.

Its identity is the multi-platform smart-home lock. The broad cross-platform support, the wide smart-home ecosystem and the Xiaomi-ecosystem backing are the story here. A lock, connected. The multi-platform smart-home lock.

(Honest notes, so the ownership, the range and the platforms are framed accurately, because the Xiaomi relationship is easy to overstate. Aqara sells the locks as its heroes — the U-series, from the entry U50 to the fingerprint U100, the Matter-over-Thread U200 and the U300 lever lock — inside a broad ecosystem of hubs, sensors, cameras and switches, and we report its language as the brand’s own. On ownership: Aqara is operated by Lumi United Technology, a Shenzhen company founded in 2009 by Eugene You, with the Aqara brand launched in 2016; Xiaomi is a strategic minority investor and Aqara was an early Xiaomi-ecosystem player, but Lumi is an independent company, not owned by Xiaomi, with other institutional backers, so we say Xiaomi-invested and never Xiaomi-owned, and note Lumi filed for a Hong Kong listing. On the differentiator, which is the whole pitch: Aqara supports Apple Home and Home Key, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Matter, so it is unusually cross-platform and a HomeKit favourite. On where it is made: China. Its designs, the Aqara name and the U-series names are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Aqara lives in an ecosystem teal. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Aqara’s identity is connected, cross-platform and ecosystem-wide — an ecosystem teal, an ink, a pale aqua, a deep teal, and a paper. The palette leans ecosystem teal and pale aqua: a fresh, technical register that nods to a connected home and broad compatibility rather than a loud logo colour. It signals the multi-platform smart-home lock — connected, compatible and ecosystem-wide. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is an ecosystem teal signals a connected, cross-platform identity. Aqara’s world is a lock that talks to whatever smart home you already have. For designers, it is a reminder that a fresh ecosystem teal and a soft pale aqua can carry a maker brand — a technical tone held as colour, not a product shot. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: name Lumi as the company; say Xiaomi-invested, not Xiaomi-owned; date Aqara to 2016 and Lumi to 2009; lead with multi-platform support; and place manufacturing in China.

Typography

The register is an ecosystem sans — connected, compatible, wide.

Aqara’s identity carries a connected, compatible, wide spirit — an ecosystem brand, not a single-product maker. An ecosystem sans captures the mood: clean, modern and confident, the register of a device built to work with everything. Set in an ecosystem-teal palette, the ecosystem sans feels connected and compatible — exactly the personality Aqara carries. It behaves like a made, engineered thing rather than a loud logo, mirroring a hub node and a circuit board. (Aqara’s real locks and the names are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “an ecosystem-sans brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: connected, compatible and wide.

The smart lock

Aqara stands for the multi-platform smart-home lock.

Aqara brings the round its ecosystem node. An ecosystem-teal palette, an ecosystem sans and a 2016 brand launch make one thing — the multi-platform smart-home lock — the whole identity: connected, cross-platform and ecosystem-wide. The broad platform support is the pitch, and the wide smart-home range is the proof. The point is a lock that works with every major smart home, in a round about who owns these devices.

Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, the Xiaomi relationship clarified and the platforms named. A maker in this spirit would name Lumi as the company, say Xiaomi-invested rather than Xiaomi-owned, and lead with multi-platform support. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Aqara sells the U-series locks as its heroes; it is operated by Lumi United, a Shenzhen company founded in 2009, with the Aqara brand from 2016; Xiaomi is a minority investor, not the owner; it supports Apple Home, Google, Alexa, SmartThings and Matter; and it is made in China. Aqara sits fifth in the round, after Schlage. The honest editorial moves are to name Lumi, to say Xiaomi-invested not owned, to date Aqara and Lumi, to lead with multi-platform, and to place manufacturing in China.

For designers and brand-builders, Aqara continues the smart lock: make cross-platform compatibility the identity — and state a big-name investor relationship precisely. The lessons: win on working with everyone rather than locking to one platform; state an investor relationship precisely rather than imply ownership; make the lock one node in a broad ecosystem; keep company and brand distinct; and never reproduce a logo. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Aqara is the Lumi-made, Xiaomi-invested smart-home brand whose locks work across Apple, Google, Alexa and Matter — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. The hook is that openness: while the Western giants tie locks to their own platforms and stores, Aqara built its name on working with all of them at once — Apple, Google, Alexa, SmartThings, Matter — a Shenzhen ecosystem brand that Xiaomi backed but does not own. Read that way, Aqara is less a lock than a connected ecosystem: connected, compatible, wide. The lesson for a brand is that cross-platform compatibility and honest framing reinforce each other, and stating the Xiaomi relationship precisely keeps the story earned. Aqara made the-multi-platform-smart-home-lock the identity — proof that compatibility carries a round.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Aqara’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Aqara, Lumi United or Xiaomi. The Aqara name and its designs are IP of their owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and hub-node / circuit-board texture swatches); no lock, hub or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported: Aqara is a smart-home/IoT brand operated by Lumi United Technology (HQ Shenzhen, China; founded 2009 by Eugene You; the Aqara brand launched 2016); its smart-lock heroes are the U-series (U50, U100, U200, U300), within a broad ecosystem of hubs, sensors, cameras and switches; it supports Apple Home / Home Key, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Matter; it is designed and made in China. Honest notes: ⚠ Xiaomi is a strategic minority investor and Aqara is a prominent Xiaomi-ecosystem brand, but Lumi is an independent company — Aqara is Xiaomi-invested, NOT Xiaomi-owned (largest institutional holder is Joy Capital; exact stakes are estimated); Lumi filed for a Hong Kong IPO (2025); Lumi is the company and Aqara the brand. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
