A legend in a bottle

Borjomi turned a Georgian legend into an emblem.

Borjomi is a lesson in myth as identity. From the Borjomi gorge in Georgia, it is a naturally carbonated mineral water of volcanic origin, rising from deep artesian springs at 38–41 °C without pumping. Commercially bottled from around 1890, with imperial-era roots (a Romanov built a bottling plant in 1894), it carries a genuine heritage and a founding legend.

That legend is on the label. The story of a wounded deer healed by drinking the spring became the brand’s deer emblem, set in an oval device with the Borjomi mountains, on the brand’s signature green (“Georgian Green”) glass. The wordmark appears across scripts — Latin, Georgian and Cyrillic — reflecting its markets, under the line “Live Water, Georgian Legend.”

(Honest notes: dates vary, so “commercial bottling from around 1890, with mid-19th-century imperial origins” is the safe phrasing; the water’s natural volcanic carbonation is real; and on ownership — after 2022 sanctions touched a former controlling shareholder, the brand was partially restructured (the Georgian government took a small stake and board control), but it was not fully nationalised, and it is operating and expanding. No official brand hex is published.)

Colour

Borjomi lives in green and gold. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Borjomi’s identity is heritage, green and Georgian — a Borjomi green, a turquoise, a heritage gold, a cream, and an ink. The palette comes from the bottle: the signature green glass, a turquoise accent, and a warm gold for the deer and heritage detailing. It signals a storied, natural, place-rooted water rather than a modern commodity. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is green and gold read as heritage nature. Borjomi’s world is a green bottle and a golden emblem. For designers, it is a reminder that a natural colour (green) plus a heritage metallic (gold) and a real emblem (the deer) can make a brand feel both ancient and premium. The takeaways: anchor on a signature glass colour; add a single warm heritage accent; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using the deep green for small text so the green and gold stay rich.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a refined heritage serif — storied and premium.

Borjomi’s identity carries a storied, heritage, premium spirit — a wordmark, a deer, and a mountain scene in an oval, on green glass. A refined serif captures the mood: it is dignified and old-world, the register of a water with a 19th-century imperial pedigree and a founding legend. Set against green and gold, the serif feels heritage and premium — exactly the legend-in-a-bottle personality Borjomi carries. It is classic rather than modern, mirroring a label built around a myth. (Borjomi’s real wordmark, the deer emblem and the oval device are trademarks and trade dress we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not published, so we don’t assert it.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a refined heritage serif spirit,” not the Borjomi logo. The type behaves like the brand: storied, dignified and premium.

Building a brand on a founding myth

Borjomi stands for its legend.

Borjomi is a lesson in owning a story. Its whole identity flows from a legend — a wounded deer healed by the spring — made visible as the deer emblem, wrapped in a Georgian mountain scene on green glass. A real product (naturally carbonated volcanic water) is elevated by a memorable myth and a strong national identity. The differentiator is narrative: Borjomi is a legend you can drink.

For designers and brand-builders, Borjomi offers a clear takeaway: a founding story can anchor an identity. The lessons: turn genuine heritage or legend into a single emblem (the deer); root the palette in place (green glass, gold); and let the wordmark travel across scripts for a multi-market brand. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: commercial bottling dates to around 1890, the carbonation is genuinely natural, and the post-2022 ownership change was partial rather than a full nationalisation — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Borjomi drinks its legend — proof that a story can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Borjomi’s visual identity; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Borjomi or IDS Borjomi. The Borjomi name, wordmark, deer emblem and oval device are trademarks and trade dress of their respective owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches), not Borjomi assets, and no deer emblem, device or logo is reproduced. Facts reported from public sources (borjomi.com, Wikipedia): Borjomi is a naturally carbonated mineral water of volcanic origin from the Borjomi gorge in Georgia, rising from deep artesian springs at 38–41 °C; it has been commercially bottled from around 1890, with mid-19th-century imperial-era origins (a Romanov bottling plant in 1894); its identity centres on a deer emblem (from a founding legend of a wounded deer healed by the spring) in an oval device with the Borjomi mountains, on signature green (“Georgian Green”) glass, with a trilingual wordmark and the line “Live Water, Georgian Legend.” Honest notes: dates vary (safe phrasing: commercial bottling from around 1890, imperial-era origins); the natural volcanic carbonation is real; and after 2022 sanctions affected a former controlling shareholder, ownership was partially restructured (the Georgian government took a small stake and board control) rather than fully nationalised, with the brand operating and expanding — and no official brand hex is published, so colours are an unofficial interpretation.
