A distillery by the sea wall

From an 18th-century lease to a Japanese drinks group.

Bowmore is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky made at the distillery of the same name in the village of Bowmore, on the shore of Loch Indaal. English Wikipedia calls it the oldest running distillery on Islay, and the company describes it as “the first licensed distillery on Islay in 1779.”

Accounts of the founding differ in detail. English Wikipedia says the distillery is said to have been established in 1779 by a local merchant, John P. Simson. The company’s own heritage page names David Simson, who it says took a lease on the land in 1766 and brought a new water supply from the River Laggan; it gives 1779 as the year the distillery’s name was first recorded, and adds that local archivists think distilling began almost a decade earlier.

The company says the Mutter family, William and James, ran Bowmore from 1837 to 1887 and turned it into a commercial operation; English Wikipedia says James Mutter had a small iron steamship built to carry barley, coal and whisky. In the company’s telling, John Bell Sherriff of Campbeltown bought the distillery in 1887, a London consortium owned it from 1892, and the Sherriffs returned in 1925 until production stopped in 1940. During the Second World War the site was used by RAF Coastal Command, which flew flying boats from Loch Indaal, English Wikipedia says.

The modern owners came in two steps. English Wikipedia says that Stanley P. Morrison, who had set up a whisky business with James Howat in 1951, formed Morrison’s Bowmore Distillery Ltd to take over the distillery in 1963, and that control of the family company passed to Brian Morrison in 1971. In 1994 the Japanese drinks group Suntory, already a shareholder for several years, bought Morrison Bowmore Distillers outright. The parent is now Suntory Global Spirits, the name Beam Suntory took on 30 April 2024, the company announced; the brand’s site lists Bowmore as its trademark, and the group also owns the bourbon Jim Beam.

Colour

Legacy black, a sea dragon and a vault below the waves.

Much of Bowmore’s visual story comes from one bottling. The company says the first of five Black Bowmore releases appeared in 1993, from spirit distilled almost three decades earlier, and credits the series with making its rare releases collectable. When Bowmore redesigned its bottles in August 2024, The Spirits Business reported, it kept black as its legacy colour in homage to Black Bowmore, distilled in 1964, and added what the brand called “morphic linework” to suggest the layered character of the whisky. The new look launched on a four-strong Sherry Oak Collection sold first through The Whisky Exchange and on a travel-retail range called Appellations, with the permanent range to follow from 2025. Kirsteen Beeston, the marketing director, told the magazine the aim was “to redefine what it means to enjoy a glass of Bowmore.”

Two places give the brand its imagery. The first is the No.1 Vaults, the distillery’s celebrated warehouse; the company tied its 2012 release The 1957, which it calls the oldest Islay single malt, to the vault’s story. The second is the floor maltings: English Wikipedia says Bowmore still turns some of its own barley on traditional malting floors, though most of its malt comes from the mainland. The company also says a Seadragon emerged as a central motif of its story in the 1970s, under the Morrisons.

Bowmore has used outside designers for special editions. The Moodie Davitt Report reported in November 2019 that Beam Suntory and Aston Martin had agreed a partnership for exclusive bottlings and events, which the company dates to 2020; Ed Stening of Beam Suntory called it “a landmark moment in Bowmore’s long-standing history.” In August 2026 The Whiskey Wash reported the Captivo collection, two 20 year olds whose bottles carry a “portal” designed by Alex Mustonen, co-founder of the New York studio Snarkitecture, its first work in whisky.

The seven brands in this group are all Scotch single malts: The Balvenie, Glenfarclas, Aberlour, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Oban and Springbank. Single malt brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family companies that still own their distillery to names that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a specialist whisky bar.

A single malt’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, changed how it makes its whisky or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its whisky is actually distilled, matured and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its whisky is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Bowmore

A village institution with royal visitors.

The distillery is part of village life. English Wikipedia says waste heat from the distillery warms a public swimming pool built in a former warehouse, and that all Morrison Bowmore whisky is bottled at Springburn in Glasgow rather than on the island. The company says Queen Elizabeth II made her first visit to a Scotch whisky distillery at Bowmore in 1980 and was presented with her own cask, and that Bowmore won the Queen’s Award three years running, an achievement it dates to 1995.

English Wikipedia lists a core range at 12, 15, 18 and 25 years, matured mostly in American oak with some sherry casks, and the distillery works with two wash stills and two spirit stills.

The name needs a little care. Bowmore is also the village, Islay’s administrative centre, and the whisky’s own site is bowmore.com. Its owner was called Beam Suntory until April 2024, so older reports use that name.

For a design guide, Bowmore shows how a single rare bottling can set the colour of a whole brand, and how a warehouse, a malting floor and a loch can carry its story for more than two centuries. Compare Suntory, the Osaka group that owns it, and Bruichladdich, its neighbour across Loch Indaal. For this guide we use legacy black, Loch Indaal blue and copper with a classical serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
