A name that is a description

Two Blockbuster executives in Florida.

Extended Stay America is a chain of what English Wikipedia calls economy apartment hotels, operating in the United States and Canada, and its name describes the kind of stay it is built around. It was founded in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1995 by George D. Johnson Jr. and Wayne Huizenga, Serviced Apartment News reported in March 2018. English Wikipedia dates the founding to 9 January 1995 and describes both men as former executives of Viacom and its video-rental subsidiary Blockbuster — Huizenga had built Blockbuster before its sale to Viacom. Serviced Apartment News noted that Huizenga had also founded AutoNation and Waste Management, and that he had been the inaugural owner of the Florida Panthers hockey team and the Florida Marlins baseball team, and had owned the Miami Dolphins.

The business moved quickly. English Wikipedia records that the company’s opening hotels were in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Marietta, Georgia, in August 1995, and that the company was listed on the stock market through an initial public offering on 14 December 1995. In April 1997 it bought StudioPLUS, another extended-stay chain, and it later developed a budget extended-stay name, Crossland Economy Studios, which was sold in 2015, the encyclopedia says.

Its corporate base moved north. English Wikipedia records that in 2013 the company moved its headquarters from Spartanburg to Charlotte, North Carolina, where it remains.

The name has stayed the same throughout: three plain English words, a kind of stay and a country, with no founder’s name and no invented word. The brand’s later sub-names — Premier Suites and Suites — were added after it, as the 2021 announcements show.

Owners and investors.

Extended Stay America has changed hands several times. Blackstone acquired the company in May 2004, Serviced Apartment News reported. English Wikipedia records that Blackstone combined it with other extended-stay names it owned — Homestead Studio Suites, StudioPLUS, Crossland and Extended Stay Deluxe — under a management company called Extended Stay Hotels. Homestead, the encyclopedia adds, had been founded by Security Capital in 1992 and bought by Blackstone in November 2001. Blackstone sold the combined business to the Lightstone Group in June 2007.

English Wikipedia records that the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 15 June 2009 and emerged in October 2010, after a consortium of Blackstone, Paulson & Co. and Centerbridge Partners bought it at auction. It returned to the stock market and, the encyclopedia says, traded for years as a “paired share” with ESH Hospitality, a real-estate investment trust that owned the hotels.

The present owners took over in 2021. Connect CRE reported on 21 June 2021 that Blackstone Real Estate Partners and Starwood Capital Group had completed their acquisition of Extended Stay America and ESH Hospitality, a deal first announced that March; Institutional Real Estate reported the completion on 16 June. Blackstone’s Tyler Henritze said at the time that his firm had “helped create this company nearly 20 years ago,” Institutional Real Estate reported, referring to the 2004 purchase. English Wikipedia records that the company’s shares were delisted from Nasdaq when it went private. Blackstone and Starwood Capital have owned Extended Stay America since 2021.

The brand has also opened itself to franchising. In its 2021 announcement the company said its core brand would become its main target for franchise conversions, LODGING magazine reported.

Signs, lobbies and rooms.

The brands in this group are motel and economy hotel names: chains of roadside and city lodgings, many of them run by franchisees under a name owned by another company. A brand of this kind lives in a sequence of physical places rather than in a single package, and each place carries the name in a different way.

The pylon sign is one of them: a tall post or panel set beside a highway or an exit ramp, designed to be read from a moving car and often lit after dark, so a wordmark and its colours have to work at a distance. Closer in, a canopy over the entrance, a sign on the building itself and the lobby door repeat the mark at a smaller scale. Inside, the front desk, the key card, the room directory and the linen take the same name into the room. Some chains add a mascot, which can appear on signs and in advertising alike.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding, its owners and franchisors, and changes to its name, sign and identity — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Extended Stay America

From one brand to a family.

Until 2021 Extended Stay America was a single brand. That changed in February 2021. HOTELS magazine reported on 25 February 2021 that the company was launching Extended Stay America Premier Suites, a new brand for newly built and fully renovated hotels with upgraded amenities, and that it would rebrand the rest of its hotels as Extended Stay America Suites over the following months. LODGING magazine described the change as a move from a single-branded company to a multi-brand portfolio under the Extended Stay America umbrella.

The company explained the renaming in terms of communication. “Rebranding our core hotels to Extended Stay America Suites communicates our current offering more clearly to guests,” Mark Williams, its managing director of franchise development, said, according to LODGING. The company’s chief investment officer, Judi Bikulege, said customer research had shown that the brand could reach more travellers with a product that offered the amenities they valued, the magazine reported. The magazine also reported that the company saw the change as a way to make better use of the strength of the Extended Stay America name and its experience in the extended-stay market. The company listed the Premier Suites additions as an enhanced breakfast, larger televisions, more storage and a signature bedding package.

The naming system keeps the parent name in front. Extended Stay America placed a descriptor after its own name: Premier Suites for the upgraded tier, Suites for the core hotels. In the company’s 2021 announcement, quoted by HOTELS, chief executive Bruce Haase said the new brand built on the company’s “legacy” of serving extended-stay customers.

The brand belongs to a wider group of American economy lodging names, alongside motel chains such as Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn; its headquarters are in Charlotte, North Carolina.

For a design guide, Extended Stay America shows how a descriptive name can become a brand family by adding words rather than replacing them. Compare Red Roof Inn and Motel 6, two American roadside names. For this guide we use a navy, a mint wash and a teal with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
