The metropolitan frame

Nirvan Javan names each collection after a world city.

Nirvan Javan is a lesson in metropolitan purism as the identity. A Swiss design brand from Zurich, it names each collection after a world city and designs to that city’s character, in a purist, minimal language.

Its identity is the metropolitan frame. Nirvan Javan’s clean acetate and titanium frames — muted, precise, originally logo-free — are the work it is known for, each collection a portrait of a city. Eyewear as travel. Purism with an address.

(Honest notes: Nirvan Javan is a Swiss eyewear brand based in Zurich, under the legal entity Nirvan Javan AG, from its eponymous designer — of Persian heritage, trained as an optician — founded in 2015 (not 2014); a three-founder claim naming others appears in one source and is unconfirmed, so we name only Nirvan Javan. Its signature is metropolitan purism — each collection named after and inspired by a world city, in a purist, minimal language of clean lines and muted tones that was originally logo-free (“freed from any excess, not even a logo”) — with an “NJ” pattern in its Marrakech collection, opticals named Zurich, London, Stockholm, Paris and Tokyo, and a 3D-printed Zurich collection created with designer Alfredo Häberli. On production, it is designed in Switzerland and handcrafted in Japan, in Japanese acetate and titanium (an Italian-acetate mention appears inconsistently, so we treat manufacture as Japan). It is an independent, small house. We don’t lead with a “hidden inner colour,” which is unconfirmed as its signature, and we treat the NJ pattern and the Häberli frame as IP. There’s no official brand hex, and we reproduce no frame, pattern or logo — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Nirvan Javan lives in a metropolitan-neutral palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Nirvan Javan’s identity is purist, muted and metropolitan — a metro blue, an ink, a taupe, a slate, and a white. The palette leans metropolitan neutral — the register of muted city tones and clean minimalism. It signals purism and travel rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a metropolitan-neutral palette signals purist minimalism. Nirvan Javan’s world is a purist, muted, considered object. For designers, it is a reminder that a conceptual system — a collection per city — can be the whole identity, and that a muted metropolitan palette signals that purism. Because a metro blue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: build a system; keep it muted; stay purist; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a purist sans — clean, muted, precise.

Nirvan Javan’s identity carries a clean, muted, precise spirit — a purist, metropolitan object. A geometric purist sans captures the mood: it is minimal and current, the register of logo-free purism. Set in a metropolitan-neutral palette, the purist sans feels clean and precise — exactly the personality Nirvan Javan carries. It is muted rather than loud, mirroring a purist frame. (Nirvan Javan’s real frame, NJ pattern and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a purist sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: clean, muted and precise.

04

Metropolitan purism as identity

Nirvan Javan stands for the metropolitan frame.

Nirvan Javan is a lesson in building an identity from a system. A metropolitan-neutral palette, a purist sans and a city-named frame make metropolitan purism the whole brand — clean, muted, precise. The system is the differentiator. The differentiator is a clear concept — a collection for each world city, designed to its character — carried in a purist, originally logo-free language.

Put to work, the identity is a concept made consistent. A designer building in this spirit would define one organizing idea and let every collection express it, so the range feels like a coherent world rather than a set of products. The lesson Nirvan Javan teaches is that a strong conceptual system plus real craft can build a brand: the city concept and a purist aesthetic give it a distinctive identity, and a muted, minimal design language keeps that purism consistent.

For designers and brand-builders, Nirvan Javan offers a clear takeaway: let a concept organize the whole range. The lessons: build a system; keep it muted; stay purist; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it was founded in 2015, not 2014, and we name only its eponymous designer — the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. And it is a reminder that made-where honesty means naming the maker’s country: Nirvan Javan is designed in Switzerland and handcrafted in Japan, so we say so. Nirvan Javan made the metropolitan frame the brand — proof that a concept can be the difference.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Nirvan Javan’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Nirvan Javan AG, and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Nirvan Javan name, frames, the “NJ” pattern and wordmark are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and texture swatches); no frame, the NJ pattern or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (nirvanjavan.com; The Eyewear Forum): Nirvan Javan is a Swiss design eyewear brand from Zurich (founded 2015) known for purist, minimal frames whose collections are each named after a world city. Honest notes: it is designed in Switzerland and handcrafted in Japan; it was founded in 2015 (not 2014), and only its eponymous designer is named; the signature is metropolitan purism, not an unconfirmed “hidden colour”; and no official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
