Onyx Coffee Lab Brand Guidelines
Award-winning coffee design — from Arkansas to the world stage.

Two constants: a black-plus-vivid palette and a modern sans. Abstract homage — not the Onyx wordmark or logo.
Arkansas goes world-class
Onyx pairs competition craft with award-winning design.
Onyx Coffee Lab is a lesson in craft and design lifting a brand onto the world stage. Founded in 2012 by Jon and Andrea Allen in Northwest Arkansas, it became a competition powerhouse: Andrea Allen won the 2020 US Barista Championship and placed runner-up at the 2021 World Barista Championship, and Onyx baristas have taken further national titles. Its “lab” ethos means precision, quality obsession and radical sourcing transparency.
Its other claim to fame is design: Onyx won both the Packaging and Branding categories at the 2021 SCA Coffee Design Awards. Its packaging is a system of vibrant, matte, multi-coloured boxes keyed to flavour, with embossed detail and the producer’s name given precedence — a tactile, gift-like, high-design object. Its blends include Southern Weather, Monarch and Geometry, and it remains independent and founder-led.
(Honest notes: Onyx is a genuine world-class competitor, not just a regional roaster; Andrea Allen’s World Barista Championship runner-up finish was 2021 (her US title was 2020); its current design is vibrant and multi-coloured, not the earth-tone look of an earlier era; and it is independent and founder-led. No official brand hex is published.)
Colour
Onyx lives in a black-plus-vivid palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Onyx Coffee Lab’s identity is bold, modern and vivid — an onyx black anchor, a vivid coral, a marigold, a teal green, and a cobalt. The palette reads like its bag system: a constant black frame with a rotating set of vivid, flavour-keyed hues. It signals precision and high design rather than rustic café warmth. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a black-plus-vivid palette signals design-led specialty coffee. Onyx’s world reads as precise and artful. For designers, it is a reminder that a black anchor with rotating vivid accents conveys a modern, award-winning design system, matching a brand whose packaging is a design object. The takeaways: anchor on a constant dark; rotate vivid, product-keyed accents; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using the onyx black for small text so the vivid hues stay in the palette.
Typography
The wordmark spirit is a modern sans — precise and artful.
Onyx Coffee Lab’s identity carries a precise, modern, artful spirit — an “ONYX” wordmark whose clean forms match a design-led, lab-precise roaster. A modern sans captures the mood: it is exact and contemporary, the register of an award-winning design system rather than a rustic café. Set against a black-plus-vivid palette, the modern sans feels precise and artful — exactly the competition-craft, high-design personality Onyx carries. It is exacting rather than folksy, mirroring a precise, design-forward brand. (Onyx’s real wordmark is a trademark we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not something we assert.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a modern sans spirit,” not the Onyx logo. The type behaves like the brand: precise, modern and artful.

Design and craft as the difference
Onyx stands for design-led, world-class coffee.
Onyx Coffee Lab is a lesson in using craft and design to transcend geography. From Northwest Arkansas — far from the coastal coffee capitals — it competed and won at the highest level, then wrapped that quality in award-winning, high-design packaging that treats each coffee as a distinct, tactile object. Craft earned the credibility; design made it famous and shareable. The differentiator is the pairing: genuine competition-grade quality plus a genuinely great design system, kept independent.
For designers and brand-builders, Onyx offers a clear takeaway: design and craft together can beat location. The lessons: earn credibility with real quality (competition wins, transparency); invest in a distinctive, award-worthy design system (the vivid, flavour-keyed bags); and let both, not geography, define the brand. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Andrea Allen’s WBC runner-up finish was 2021, the current design is vibrant (not earth-tone), and Onyx is independent — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Onyx paired craft with design — proof that both can be the difference.
