The mass-retail B-hyve

Orbit is the Utah irrigation brand, now Husqvarna-owned, whose B-hyve smart timers made cheap smart watering a big-box buy.

Orbit brings the round its mass-retail node — a Utah irrigation brand whose B-hyve smart timers put cheap smart watering on big-box shelves, and which now shares a Swedish parent with another brand in this very round. Its answer to a round about who owns the controller and where it is made changed in 2021: an American brand now owned by Husqvarna, the same group that owns Gardena.

Its identity is the mass-retail B-hyve. The affordable B-hyve smart line, the mass-retail reach and the 2021 Husqvarna ownership are the story here. A timer, cheap and everywhere. The mass-retail B-hyve.

(Honest notes, so the ownership, the origin and the shared parent are framed accurately. Orbit sells irrigation broadly as its heroes — more than two thousand products, from underground systems and drip to hose-end timers and misting, plus a professional line — with B-hyve as its smart Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range of smart timers, hose-tap battery timers and indoor and outdoor controllers with weather-based scheduling and an app; we report the B-hyve specifics as understood rather than freshly confirmed. On origin: Orbit is American, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has operated since 1986, with roots to the 1950s. On ownership, the update that matters: Orbit was acquired by Husqvarna, the Swedish publicly listed group, in December 2021, so it is no longer independent — and, importantly for this round, that makes it a sibling of Gardena, which Husqvarna also owns, so we note the shared parent rather than treating them as unrelated. On positioning: budget-to-mid, sold heavily through mass retail like Home Depot and Lowe’s, with cheap smart hose-tap timers and a free app as its signature. Its designs, the Orbit and B-hyve names are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Orbit lives in a retail lime. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Orbit’s identity is affordable, mass-market and everywhere — a retail lime, an ink, a pale chartreuse, a deep olive, and a paper. The palette leans retail lime and pale chartreuse: a fresh, approachable register that nods to affordable, big-box smart watering rather than a loud logo colour. It signals the mass-retail B-hyve — affordable, mass-market and everywhere. The honest caveat: with no official brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a retail lime signals an affordable, mass-market identity. Orbit’s world is a cheap smart timer bought on a hardware-store run. For designers, it is a reminder that a fresh lime and a soft chartreuse can carry a value brand — an approachable tone held as an accent, not a product shot. Because a bright hue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: keep Orbit a US Salt Lake City brand but note the 2021 Husqvarna ownership and the shared parent with Gardena; lead with the affordable B-hyve line; and keep it budget mass-retail.

Typography

The register is a retail sans — affordable, mass-market, everywhere.

Orbit’s identity carries an affordable, mass-market, everywhere spirit — a value big-box brand, not a premium or pro house. A retail sans captures the mood: clean, plain and friendly, the register of an affordable shelf product. Set in a retail-lime palette, the retail sans feels affordable and mass-market — exactly the personality Orbit carries. It behaves like a made, functional thing rather than a loud logo, mirroring a water-droplet arc and a soil-moisture grid. (Orbit’s real products and the B-hyve name are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a retail-sans brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: affordable, mass-market and everywhere.

The smart sprinkler

Orbit stands for the mass-retail B-hyve.

Orbit brings the round its mass-retail node. A retail-lime palette, a retail sans and a 1986 operating history make one thing — the mass-retail B-hyve — the whole identity: affordable, mass-market and everywhere. The affordable B-hyve line is the pitch, and the mass-retail reach is the proof. The point is a US brand now under Husqvarna, sharing a parent with Gardena, in a round about who owns the controller and where it is made.

Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, the new owner named and the shared parent noted. A brand in this spirit would keep Orbit a US Salt Lake City brand, note the 2021 Husqvarna ownership and the shared parent with Gardena, and lead with the affordable B-hyve line. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Orbit sells a broad irrigation range with the B-hyve smart line as heroes; it is American, based in Salt Lake City, operating since 1986; it was acquired by Husqvarna in December 2021, so it is no longer independent and is a sibling of Gardena; and it is budget-to-mid, sold heavily through mass retail. Orbit sits fourth in the round, after Hunter. The honest editorial moves are to keep it a US brand, to note the Husqvarna ownership and the Gardena sibling, and to keep it affordable mass-retail.

For designers and brand-builders, Orbit continues the smart sprinkler: win mass retail on price — and disclose a shared parent rather than hide it. The lessons: a value brand can dominate big-box shelves with cheap smart timers; an ownership change, here to Husqvarna in 2021, is stated rather than left as the old independent story; and where two brands in the same piece share a parent — Orbit and Gardena both under Husqvarna — that shared ownership is disclosed rather than framed as an unrelated rivalry. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Orbit is the Utah irrigation brand, now Husqvarna-owned, whose B-hyve smart timers made cheap smart watering a big-box buy — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. The hook is that reach: Orbit’s B-hyve made smart watering a cheap, grab-it-on-the-way-out purchase, and the brand now sits inside Husqvarna alongside Gardena. Read that way, Orbit is less a standalone than the mass-retail B-hyve: affordable, mass-market, everywhere. The lesson for a brand is that mass-retail value and honest disclosure of a shared parent reinforce each other, and noting the Gardena sibling keeps the story earned. Orbit made the-mass-retail-B-hyve the identity — proof that affordable reach can carry a round.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Orbit’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Orbit or Husqvarna. The Orbit and B-hyve names and their designs are IP of their owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and water-droplet-arc / soil-moisture-grid texture swatches); no timer, controller or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported: Orbit (Orbit Irrigation Products) is American, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, operating since 1986 (roots to the 1950s, Max Ericksen); ⚠ it was acquired by Husqvarna Group (Swedish, publicly listed) in December 2021, so it is no longer independent — and it is a SIBLING of Gardena, also Husqvarna-owned (the shared parent is noted rather than framing them as unrelated competitors); its range spans 2,000+ products (underground WaterMaster, drip DripMaster, hose-end SunMate timers, misting ArizonaMist, pro Hydro-Rain), with B-hyve as its smart Wi-Fi/Bluetooth line (smart timers, hose-tap battery timers, indoor/outdoor controllers, weather-based scheduling, app); it is budget-to-mid, mass-retail (Home Depot/Lowe’s). Honest notes: ⚠ B-hyve product specifics are from prior knowledge; the manufacturing country is not stated (no made-in claim); recalls/lawsuits were not searchable this session (none asserted); the Orbit/B-hyve marks are protected. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
