R+D.LAB Brand Guidelines
The rational glass.

Two constants: a clear-grey-and-sand palette and a minimal technical register. Abstract homage — not an R+D.LAB vessel or wordmark.
The rational glass
R+D.LAB makes refined, minimal borosilicate glass, made by artisan hands in Italy.
R+D.LAB is a lesson in reduction as the identity. An Italian design studio, it makes refined, collectible glassware in mouth-blown borosilicate — the thin, durable “lab glass” — reduced to a minimal, rationalist language drawn from Milanese architecture, where slight imperfection is embraced as character.
Its identity is the rational glass. R+D.LAB’s pure, minimal borosilicate pieces — the fluted “millerighe” and its clear forms — are the work it is known for. Glass, made rational. A studio that designs the essential vessel.
(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. R+D.LAB — styled with the plus and the period — is an independent design studio established in 2006, with a minimal, rationalist, Milanese sensibility; it keeps its founders essentially anonymous, so we don’t name them. On making, the important and verifiable point: its glassware is mouth-blown in borosilicate and made entirely by artisan hands in Italy — not, as an earlier misconception held, in East Africa; that idea appears to have come from a retailer’s currency menu, and we correct it. Its signature codes are the fine vertical fluting it calls “millerighe” and its clear forms, across named lines. Its collaborations — with the chef Elena Reygadas, with Commune Design, with Monocle — are their IP, described but never reproduced; and it should not be confused with the unrelated Italian testing lab at a similar domain. There is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
R+D.LAB lives in a clear-grey-and-sand palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
R+D.LAB’s identity is minimal, clear and rational — a clear grey, an ink, a warm sand, a graphite, and a milk. The palette leans clear grey and sand: the register of transparent glass and warm neutral. It signals reduction and material honesty over decoration. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.
The lesson is a clear, neutral palette signals a rational identity. R+D.LAB’s world is a minimal, clear, rational object. For designers, it is a reminder that a near-neutral palette can carry a brand about the essential vessel — clarity and warm neutrals that let form and material lead, not colour. Because a mid grey can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: reduce to essentials; keep the palette neutral; let material lead; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a minimal technical — reduced, precise, rational.
R+D.LAB’s identity carries a reduced, precise, rational spirit — an essential object, not a decorative one. A minimal technical sans captures the mood: clean, exact and modern, the register of rationalist Milanese design. Set in a clear-grey-and-sand palette, the minimal technical feels reduced and precise — exactly the personality R+D.LAB carries. It is essential rather than ornate, mirroring a pure, mouth-blown borosilicate vessel. (R+D.LAB’s real vessels, its lines and its wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a minimal-technical spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: reduced, precise and rational.

Reduction as identity
R+D.LAB stands for the rational glass.
R+D.LAB is a lesson in making reduction the identity. A clear-grey-and-sand palette, a minimal technical and pure borosilicate forms make the essential vessel the whole brand — minimal, clear and rational. The reduction is the differentiator. The differentiator is a genuinely rationalist design language — glass stripped to its simplest useful form, in a material chosen for honesty rather than show, made by hand in Italy.
Put to work, the identity is reduction as design. A studio building in this spirit would strip a form to its essence and choose an honest material, letting clarity and craft carry the object, so the customer buys into restraint and quality rather than decoration. The lesson R+D.LAB teaches is that genuine reduction plus real craft can build a brand: the minimalism gives it clarity, and the Italian hand-making gives it substance. The reduction is the personality, and the craft is the proof.
For designers and brand-builders, R+D.LAB offers a clear takeaway: reduce to the essential vessel. The lessons: strip to essentials; choose honest materials; make it by hand; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: R+D.LAB is an independent Milan studio from 2006, and its glassware is mouth-blown borosilicate made by artisan hands in Italy — not East Africa — with its collaborations described but never reproduced and the palette here an unofficial interpretation. R+D.LAB made the rational glass the brand — proof that reduction can be the difference.
