Ray Industries, a factory in Oxford and fibreglass hulls.
Sea Ray is an American maker of recreational motorboats. English Wikipedia describes the company, formally Sea Ray Boats, as part of the Brunswick Boat Group, a division of the Brunswick Corporation, and gives its base as Knoxville, Tennessee. Its origins lie further north, in the car country of Michigan.
According to English Wikipedia, Sea Ray was founded in 1959 by Cornelius Ray — listed in the article’s infobox as C.N. Ray — as an independent company called Ray Industries, in Detroit, Michigan. The boats were made from fibreglass at a factory in Oxford, Michigan, north of the city.
English Wikipedia says Sea Ray launched Ski Ray boats, dedicated tow boats for water skiing, in 1991. The same article describes a range that, before the changes of 2018, ran from power boats of around 17 feet to motor yachts of more than 65 feet, all designed, built and marketed under the Sea Ray name.
The model names became part of the brand. English Wikipedia singles out the Sundancer name, used on Sea Ray’s cruisers, and says the company began a series of “L” Series luxury yachts in 2014. The article illustrates the range with a 2005 Sea Ray 220 Sundeck, a sport deck boat fitted with a wakeboard tower, citing the company’s own electronic brochure for that model year, and with a Sundancer 320 on show at Interboot in Friedrichshafen, Germany, in 2020.

Brunswick, Florida and a change of course in 2018.
Sea Ray’s second era began with a sale. English Wikipedia says Ray Industries was bought by the Brunswick Corporation in 1986, citing a Reuters report carried in the Wall Street Journal on 29 November 1986. At the same time Brunswick also bought the Bayliner brand, and the two have sat together inside the group ever since; English Wikipedia lists Bayliner among the Brunswick boats built at Sea Ray plants, alongside Meridian Yachts.
Production also moved south. English Wikipedia says Sea Ray opened a plant on Merritt Island, Florida, in 1973, and that the site eventually grew to three plants. The company largely phased out operations there during the Great Recession; Florida Today reported on 10 February 2015 that Sea Ray Boats was resuming operations on Merritt Island.
The brand briefly widened its range under Brunswick. English Wikipedia says Sea Ray acquired a subsidiary, the performance-boat brand Baja, in 1995, and that Brunswick later sold Baja to another owner.
A major change in recent years was a decision that was then reversed. English Wikipedia says that in 2017 Brunswick announced it intended to divest the Sea Ray line. In July 2018, the same article says, Brunswick announced that it had reconsidered and withdrawn any intention to sell, and that Sea Ray would concentrate on sport boats and cruisers up to 40 feet. As part of that decision, Sea Ray ended production of its sport yacht and yacht models; the article cites a frequently-asked-questions page from the dealer MarineMax and coverage in the trade title Trade Only Today.
That reversal kept the brand inside the group whose boat business is run from the same city. English Wikipedia says the Brunswick Boat Group is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, and lists Sea Ray among its brands with Boston Whaler and Bayliner.

Design and documentation.
The brands in this group are American builders of recreational powerboats. Boat builders of this kind sit at many different points in the trade, from family firms that still carry a founder’s name to brands that now belong to larger boating groups, and a single name can cover everything from a small lake runabout to a cruiser with a cabin.
A boat brand’s identity is usually carried less by one hull than by a name on the transom, a set of model series and the place where the boats are built, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, added plants or moved its head office over the years. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its boats are actually made.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its boats are built and how its models and lettering have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

A geometric cruiser sans — round, open and evenly spaced, like a model name on a sunlit hull. (Specimen set in Josefin Sans, a geometric sans STAND-IN; NOT the Sea Ray logo.)
Sea Ray
Sundancer, Sundeck and a company history in print.
Sea Ray’s visual identity lives mostly in its names and its brochures. The Sundancer cruiser name and the Sundeck deck-boat name, are both recorded by English Wikipedia, as are the Ski Ray tow boats of 1991 and the “L” Series yachts of 2014. The model brochures that English Wikipedia cites, such as the 2004/2005 brochure for the 220 Sundeck, were published by the company in electronic form.
The company has a published history of its own. Commanding the Waterways: The Story of Sea Ray, by Jeffrey L. Rodengen, was published in 2008 by Write Stuff Enterprise in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and English Wikipedia lists it as further reading on the brand.
Inside Brunswick, Sea Ray shares a parent with the marine-engine brand Mercury Marine and with other boat names in the group. English Wikipedia’s Brunswick Corporation article says Brunswick became a major maker of yachts and pleasure boats in the 1980s, under brands including Bayliner, Boston Whaler and Sea Ray. The Brunswick Boat Group article sets Sea Ray, Bayliner and Meridian pleasure boats alongside fishing, deck and pontoon brands such as Crestliner, Lowe and Lund, and says Brunswick sells its specialty boats through Brunswick Commercial and Government Products.
The brand’s geography has moved with its owner. A company founded in Detroit and first built in Oxford, Michigan, added Florida factories in the 1970s and is now based in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Brunswick runs its boat group.
For a design guide, Sea Ray shows how a family of model names — Sundancer, Sundeck, Ski Ray — can carry a brand’s character as clearly as a badge, and how that vocabulary outlasted a change of owner, a change of home state and the end of its yacht line. Compare Boston Whaler, a sister brand under Brunswick, and Bayliner, bought by Brunswick at the same time. For this guide we use lake teal, spray white and sundeck gold with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
