Tonak Brand Guidelines
The felt behind the hats.
Aa
Two constants: a charcoal-felt palette and a Bohemian-serif register. Abstract homage — not a Tonak hat, label or hatband.
The felt behind the hats
Tonak is the Czech felt-hat house of Nový Jičín, heir to the Hückel felt tradition and one of the world’s great makers of hat bodies.
Tonak is a lesson in how a hat house can be the felt behind other people’s hats. From Nový Jičín, in Moravia, Tonak makes wool-felt and fur-felt hats — but it is also one of the world’s great makers of felt hat bodies, the blank “hoods” that milliners and famous hat brands block into their own hats. Its answer to how a hat is made begins earlier than most: turn fur and wool into felt, and supply the raw form to the whole industry. A house that makes the felt the hat world is built on.
Its identity is the Czech felt house. Tonak’s felt hats, and above all its felt bodies supplied to other makers, are the work it is known for. A felt, made for everyone. A house behind hats that carry other names.
(Honest notes, so the story stays precise, because the heritage and the entity are not the same. Tonak makes its felt in Nový Jičín, in the Czech Republic — genuine Czech manufacture, with a second plant at Strakonice for knitted headwear, berets and fezzes. Its heritage traces to 1799, when Johann Nepomuk Hückel established a hat workshop that became “Johann Hückel & Söhne” — but Tonak itself is not that firm: the name Tonak (from the Czech for “hat factory”) dates to the post-war nationalisation that consolidated Nový Jičín’s hatmaking, so we say “heritage to 1799 (Hückel); the Tonak name from nationalisation,” not “Tonak founded 1799.” It is one of the world’s largest makers of felt hats and, notably, felt hoods sold to other brands — including bowler bodies for Andean markets and fezzes. One honest point on its present: it has been financially stressed in recent years, and its ownership has changed hands (a Swedish investor, and more recently a reported new owner), so we frame its current status carefully rather than as thriving. Its name and marks are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Tonak lives in a charcoal-felt palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Tonak’s identity is industrial, sober and Central European — a charcoal felt, an ink, an ash, a slate, and a paper. The palette leans charcoal felt and ash: the register of raw felt and a large hat factory. It signals craft-at-scale over fashion. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours — an abstract nod to felt, not a sampled hat.
The lesson is a charcoal-felt palette signals a felt-maker, made-in-Moravia identity. Tonak’s world is an industrial, felt, Czech object. For designers, it is a reminder that a deep charcoal and a soft ash can carry a brand built on the raw material — the grey of felt and the neutral of a factory floor. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: make the felt; supply the industry; date the heritage honestly; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a Bohemian serif — solid, historic, industrial.
Tonak’s identity carries a solid, historic, industrial spirit — a felt factory with a long lineage, not a boutique. A Bohemian serif captures the mood: traditional, substantial and Central European, the register of a Moravian felt house. Set in a charcoal-felt palette, the Bohemian serif feels solid and historic — exactly the personality Tonak carries. It is industrial rather than delicate, mirroring raw felt. (Tonak’s real labels and the Hückel marks are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a Bohemian-serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the house: solid, historic and industrial.

The hat around the world
Tonak stands for the felt the hat world is built on.
Tonak is a lesson in how a hat house can be the industry’s supplier. A charcoal-felt palette, a Bohemian serif and a felt hood make one thing — the raw felt behind countless hats — the whole house: industrial, sober and Central European. The felt-body role is the differentiator, and the heritage of the felt is the meaning. The point is a Moravian house that not only makes its own hats but supplies the blank felt bodies that other makers, around the world, block into theirs.
Put to work, the identity is being the supplier as design. A hat house in this spirit would master the raw material, serve the whole industry, and be honest about its lineage and its present — a heritage traced to Hückel in 1799, a Tonak name from nationalisation, a business under financial strain and new ownership. A brand learning from it would see that being the maker behind the makers is a durable identity — that supplying the felt the hat world is built on is a quiet kind of power — and that being precise, made in Nový Jičín, heritage to 1799 but not founded then, currently stressed rather than thriving, keeps the story honest. A brand learning from it would also value the reveal: the felt in a famous hat may well come from a Czech factory most buyers have never heard of. The lesson Tonak teaches is that being the supplier can hold an identity: the felt gives it substance, and the honest heritage gives it depth. The material is the personality, and the felt hood is the proof.
For designers and brand-builders, Tonak opens this round of the hat around the world, from the Czech Republic: master the raw material, and be honest about lineage and present. The lessons: make the felt; supply the industry; separate a heritage from a founding; state the present carefully; and never reproduce a protected label. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Tonak is the Czech felt-hat house of Nový Jičín, heir to the Hückel felt tradition and a great maker of hat bodies — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Tonak made the felt the identity — proof that being the maker behind the makers can be the difference.
