From rivers to the open sea

Torstein Hagen’s line of 1997.

Viking is a cruise line that sails on rivers, on the open sea and on expedition routes. English Wikipedia says its operating headquarters are in Basel, Switzerland, and its marketing headquarters are in Los Angeles. The company runs three divisions under one name: Viking River Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Viking Expeditions.

The line was founded by Torstein Hagen. English Wikipedia says he established it in 1997 in St Petersburg as Viking River Cruises, with a founding fleet of four river ships. Hagen already knew the cruise business. English Wikipedia records that he had worked with Holland America Line as a McKinsey consultant in the 1970s and had been chief executive of Royal Viking Line in the early 1980s, a connection that would return later in the naming of Viking’s ocean ships.

Growth on Europe’s rivers came next. In 2000, English Wikipedia says, Viking bought the river cruise business of KD, the Köln-Düsseldorfer company. In 2011 it announced a new river ship design, the longship, which English Wikipedia describes as squaring the bow and rearranging the corridors to make better use of the hull.

The name changed twice as the business widened. In May 2013, according to English Wikipedia, Viking River Cruises became Viking Cruises as the company announced Viking Ocean Cruises, a division of small ocean-going ships. Its debut ocean ship, Viking Star, entered service in 2015. In January 2020 the company shortened its name again, to plain Viking, citing the brand’s emphasis on destinations and enrichment rather than the ship itself.

The expedition arm followed. Cruise Industry News reported on 15 October 2019 that Viking would build a pair of expedition ships with the shipbuilder VARD, named Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, and described the offer as Viking’s “thinking person’s” cruise carried over from its ocean ships. English Wikipedia records that the expedition ships began sailing in 2022, the year Viking also put its Viking Mississippi into service on the Mississippi River.

Norse gods, a flag and an aquavit bottle.

The clearest brand system at Viking is the way its ships are named. Every vessel carries the Viking prefix followed by a single word, and on the river fleet those words come from Norse mythology and Scandinavian names. English Wikipedia’s fleet list runs through names such as Viking Idun, Viking Freya, Viking Njord, Viking Odin and Viking Heimdal. Cruise Industry News, reporting in October 2026 on the delivery of the longship Viking Rota, noted that she was named after a Valkyrie and warrior maiden of Norse myth.

The river ships built for the Nile follow a second vocabulary. In August 2026 Cruise Industry News listed seven new river ships to be named together in Amsterdam: the Rhine and Danube ships Viking Haki, Halogi, Sjofn and Rota, the Seine ship Viking Fjolvar, and the Nile ships Viking Ptah and Viking Sekhmet, which take the names of Egyptian deities. The same report said seven travel advisors had been chosen as the ships’ godparents.

The ocean ships use the sky. English Wikipedia says the opening four ocean ships, Viking Star, Viking Sea, Viking Sky and Viking Sun, were named after the opening four ships of Royal Viking Line, the company Hagen had once run. Later ships turned to planets and stars. When Viking Orion was named in Livorno, Cruise Industry News reported on 15 June 2018 that the name had been chosen after the constellation, to honour the Viking explorers who navigated by the stars and the astronaut godmother Dr Anna Fisher’s work on NASA’s Orion project.

Norway is the other constant. At the christening of Viking Sky in Tromsø, Cruise Industry News reported on 23 June 2017, Hagen said the company’s ships carry the Norwegian flag, and that “Vikings were explorers.” English Wikipedia’s fleet list shows the ocean and expedition ships registered in Norway. The ceremony replaced the usual champagne with a bottle of Gammel Opland aquavit, and a gilded Viking axe was used to cut the cord. The godmother was Hagen’s sister, Marit Barstad, and the onboard deli Mamsen’s was named after their mother.

The interiors carry the same theme. English Wikipedia says the ocean ships, built by Fincantieri at Ancona, have a Scandinavian-influenced modernist interior developed by the London studio SMC Design and the Los Angeles firm Rottet Studio. On the expedition ships, Cruise Industry News reported in January 2020, the stern auditorium called The Aula takes its inspiration from the ceremonial hall of the University of Oslo, and every cabin has a glass-fronted Nordic Balcony.

Cruise and rental identities.

Once a guest is on board, a cruise line’s identity moves from the outside of the ship to the inside, and much of it is carried by wayfinding. Deck numbers at the lift lobbies, the arrows that point fore and aft, the plaques beside each restaurant door and the cabin numbers along a long corridor all have to be read quickly, often by people who are still finding their sea legs. A line can handle this with a small set of fixed choices: one typeface for signs, one way of writing deck names, and a colour or a pictogram for each zone. The daily programme slipped under the cabin door, the key card and the menu cards repeat the same choices in print, so that the ship reads as one place rather than a set of separate venues.

The identity also travels away from the ship. At each port call, the gangway and its awning, the tent or desk on the quay, the shore-excursion paddles held up by guides and the boards on waiting coaches show the line’s name to people who may never board. Smaller craft carry it too: the tenders that shuttle guests to a pier and, on expedition voyages, the inflatable boats used for landings can wear the line’s colours and a number. Where a line runs an expedition sub-brand beside its ocean fleet, the choice between a separate name, a shared prefix or a single word added to the parent name decides how far those small boats, parkas and field guides look like the rest of the family.

Viking

One word for three fleets.

The Viking identity is built on a single word that has grown shorter as the company has grown wider. The line began as Viking River Cruises in 1997, became Viking Cruises in 2013 when it added ocean ships, and became simply Viking in 2020. Each change kept the word at the front and dropped what came after it, so the river, ocean and expedition divisions could share one name.

The ships follow the same logic. A prefix that never changes is paired with a second word drawn from a fixed family: Norse gods and heroines on the European rivers, Egyptian deities on the Nile, and stars, planets and the ships of Royal Viking Line at sea. The longship itself, the river design of 2011, takes its name from the Norse vessel, and English Wikipedia lists a series of longships of the same 135-metre length from the Neptun Werft yard, set apart by their names.

Ceremony is a third strand. The christenings reported by Cruise Industry News use Norwegian music, Norwegian godmothers or public figures linked to the ship’s name, an aquavit bottle in place of champagne and a ceremonial axe. The ocean ship Viking Venus, the seventh of the identical series that began with Viking Star, was named at sea in the English Channel on 17 May 2021, with the broadcaster Anne Diamond as godmother, the publication reported in June 2026.

On board, the Nordic thread runs through the venue names as much as the décor. Mamsen’s takes its name from the Hagen family matriarch, The Aula borrows from Oslo, and the Explorers’ Lounge at the bow appears on both the ocean and the expedition ships, as Cruise Industry News described in 2020. The same publication, in October 2019, called Manfredi’s Italian restaurant one of the trademark Viking features carried over to the expedition ships.

For a design guide, Viking shows how a fixed prefix and a family of Norse and celestial names can hold a large and growing fleet together across rivers, seas and polar waters. Compare Hurtigruten, another line built on the Norwegian coast and its traditions, and Cunard, whose ships also run in naming families.
