818 Tequila Brand Guidelines
Award-winning, from the Valley.

Two constants: a warm desert palette and a bold numeral hero. Abstract homage — not the 818 wordmark or bottle.
An area code on a bottle
818 turned a numeral into a desert brand.
818 Tequila is a lesson in a number as a brand. Launched in 2021 by Kendall Jenner, it takes its name from the 818 area code (the San Fernando Valley near Calabasas), makes its tequila in Jalisco, Mexico, and builds its whole identity around a bold, oversized “818” numeral on a squat, rounded bottle.
The look is warm and desert-toned — tan, cream and terracotta, agave imagery, a relaxed sun-baked California feel — an identity created by London design studio Zak Group (with a striking ceramic decanter for its Eight Reserve extra-añejo by designer Valerio Sommella). It leans on being smooth, sippable and award-winning.
(Honest notes: 818 is founder-led but now has outside stakeholders — the producer Grupo Solave and, from 2026, Sazerac (a minority investment plus US distribution) — it is not fully acquired. And its launch drew real criticism: accusations of cultural appropriation of Mexican tequila culture and scrutiny of its sustainability messaging (the agave-waste “bricks”). A fair counterpoint: 818 genuinely won blind-tasting awards submitted before Jenner’s name was attached. No official brand hex is published.)

818’s identity is warm, sun-baked and desert-toned — a terracotta, a clay, a sand, a cream, and an ink. The palette is a California-desert neutral: tan and sand, terracotta and clay, with agave-toned accents. It signals a relaxed, warm, Valley-meets-agave-field feel rather than flashy nightlife spirits. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a place-based palette plus a bold hero graphic. 818’s world is the sun-baked desert. For designers, it is a reminder that a warm desert palette anchored by one enormous hero graphic (the “818” numeral) makes a bottle instantly recognisable from across a bar. The takeaways: root the palette in a place; commit to one oversized hero mark; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using a deep clay-brown for small text so the desert tones stay warm.
Typography
The wordmark spirit is a clean sans — modern and confident.
818’s identity carries a modern, confident, relaxed spirit — a bold “818” numeral as the hero, set in warm desert tones. A clean modern sans captures the mood: it is contemporary and assured, letting the big numeral do the work. Set against desert neutrals, the clean type feels premium yet easy — exactly the sun-baked, award-winning personality 818 carries. It is confident rather than ornate, mirroring a squat, no-nonsense bottle. (818’s real wordmark, numeral and bottle — with identity by Zak Group — are trademarks and trade dress we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not published, so we don’t assert it.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a clean sans spirit,” not the 818 logo. The type behaves like the brand: modern, confident and relaxed.

A numeral, and the caveats
818 stands for the desert numeral.
818 Tequila is a lesson in a bold, ownable hero graphic — with caveats. The oversized “818” numeral and warm desert palette make an instantly recognisable bottle, and blind-tasting awards give the liquid genuine credibility. But the launch also drew real criticism (appropriation, greenwashing), a reminder that a slick celebrity design lives inside a bigger conversation. The differentiator is a strong hero graphic on award-winning liquid.
For designers and brand-builders, 818 offers a two-sided takeaway: a single bold graphic can carry a brand — but context matters. The lessons: commit to one oversized, ownable hero mark; root the palette in a place; and remember that celebrity brands are scrutinised on more than looks. It is also a reminder to report fairly: 818 faced appropriation and greenwashing criticism, is now Sazerac-backed, and did win anonymous blind-tasting awards — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. 818 put a numeral on the desert — proof that a hero graphic can be the difference.
