The sunset consumer name

Blue is the Logitech-owned microphone name, sunset in 2023, whose Yeti survives as a Logitech product line.

Blue brings the round its consumer node — and its epitaph, because the name that put a USB microphone on every streamer’s desk has been retired, even as its most famous product lives on. Its answer to a round about who owns the studio microphone and where it is made is a corporate one, told honestly: a Logitech-owned brand, sunset in 2023, with the Yeti carried on under Logitech.

Its identity is the sunset consumer name. The Logitech ownership, the 2023 sunset of the Blue brand and the survival of the Yeti are the story here. A microphone, sunset. The sunset consumer name.

(Honest notes, so the ownership and the sunset — the date most often got wrong — are framed accurately. Blue’s heroes were the Yeti, the 2009 USB flagship that popularised desktop condensers, along with the Snowball, the Baby Bottle and the Bluebird XLR studio condensers, and we describe the standalone brand largely in the past tense. On ownership: Blue, formally Baltic Latvian Universal Electronics, was founded in 1995 by Skipper Wise and Mārtiņš Saulespurēns, and Logitech announced its purchase in July 2018 and completed it in August 2018. On the sunset, with the correction that matters: in June 2023 — not 2024 — Logitech announced it would relegate the Blue brand to audio-processing technologies and market future microphones under Logitech and Logitech G, keeping the Yeti name; so the standalone Blue mic brand is effectively retired, the Yeti survives as a Logitech product line, and Blue no longer exists as an independent company. On where it is made: its early websites described engineering and manufacturing in Latvia; we found no current, sourced statement of where Logitech makes Yeti microphones. Its designs, the Blue, Yeti, Snowball and Bluebird names and the Yeti’s retro form are Logitech IP we describe but do not reproduce; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Blue lives in a sunset steel-blue. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Blue’s identity is consumer, popular and sunset — a sunset steel-blue, an ink, a pale sky, a deep navy, and a paper. The palette leans sunset steel-blue and pale sky: a muted, retrospective register that suits a retired consumer name rather than a loud logo colour. It signals the sunset consumer name — consumer, popular and sunset. The honest caveat: with no adopted brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a sunset steel-blue signals a consumer, retired identity. Blue’s world was a Yeti on every streamer’s desk, now folded into Logitech. For designers, it is a reminder that a muted sunset steel-blue and a soft pale sky can carry a retrospective — a respectful tone held as colour, not the Yeti form. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: name Logitech as owner since 2018; date the sunset to 2023, not 2024; note the Yeti survives as a Logitech line; and describe the standalone brand in the past tense.

Typography

The register is a consumer sans — consumer, popular, sunset.

Blue’s identity carries a consumer, popular, sunset spirit — a mass-market name remembered, not one still standing alone. A consumer sans captures the mood: clean, friendly and current, the register of a desktop-microphone brand. Set in a sunset-steel-blue palette, the consumer sans feels consumer and popular — exactly how Blue is remembered. It behaves like a described artefact rather than a loud logo, mirroring a capsule-diaphragm ring and a sound-wave arc. (Blue’s real products, the Yeti form and the names are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a consumer-sans brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the memory: consumer, popular and sunset.

The studio microphone

Blue stands for the sunset consumer name.

Blue brings the round its consumer node. A sunset-steel-blue palette, a consumer sans and a sunset status make one thing — the sunset consumer name — the whole identity: consumer, popular and sunset. The Logitech ownership is the frame, and the 2023 sunset is the ending. The point is the name that popularised the desktop USB mic and was then retired, in a round about who owns the studio microphone and where it is made.

Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, the sunset dated and the survivor named. A brand history in this spirit would name Logitech as owner since 2018, date the sunset to 2023, and note the Yeti survives as a Logitech line. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Blue’s heroes were the Yeti, Snowball and Bluebird; it was founded in 1995 and acquired by Logitech in 2018; Logitech sunset the Blue brand in 2023, keeping the Yeti; Blue no longer exists as an independent company. Blue sits second in the round, after Neumann. The honest editorial moves are to name Logitech, to date the sunset to 2023 not 2024, to note the Yeti survives, and to use the past tense for the brand.

For designers and brand-builders, Blue continues the studio microphone: record a brand sunset accurately — including which product survives. The lessons: a mass-market name can be retired by its owner even after popularising a category; a sunset has a precise date — 2023, not 2024 — worth getting right; a discontinued brand and a surviving product can coexist, as the Yeti does under Logitech; and a retired brand belongs in the past tense. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Blue is the Logitech-owned microphone name, sunset in 2023, whose Yeti survives as a Logitech product line — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. The hook is that ending: Blue put the Yeti on every streamer’s desk, but after Logitech bought it in 2018 the company sunset the Blue brand in 2023, folding future microphones into Logitech and Logitech G — the standalone Blue name retired, the Yeti carried on under Logitech, and Blue no longer an independent company. Read that way, Blue is less a living brand than a sunset consumer name: consumer, popular, sunset. The lesson for a brand is that an honest sunset account and naming the survivor reinforce each other, and dating the sunset to 2023 keeps the story earned. Blue made the-sunset-consumer-name the identity — proof that even a retired brand can carry a round, honestly told.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Blue’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Blue or Logitech. The Blue name and its designs are IP of their owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and capsule-diaphragm / sound-wave texture swatches); no microphone, the Yeti body/stand or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported: Blue (formally Baltic Latvian Universal Electronics, LLC; Westlake Village, California) was founded in October 1995 by Skipper Wise and Mārtiņš Saulespurēns, and was bought by Logitech in a deal announced in July 2018 (~$117M) and completed in August 2018; its heroes were the Yeti (2009 USB flagship), the Snowball, and the Baby Bottle and Bluebird XLR studio condensers. Honest notes: ⚠⚠ in June 2023 (not 2024) Logitech announced it would relegate the “Blue” brand to audio-processing technologies and market future microphones under Logitech / Logitech G, keeping the “Yeti” name — so the standalone Blue mic brand is effectively retired, the Yeti survives as a Logitech product line, and Blue no longer exists as an independent company (described here largely in the past tense); the Blue/Yeti/Snowball/Bluebird marks and the Yeti’s form are Logitech IP. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
