A rum from a New York wine and spirits house
Two brothers, a sparkling wine and a Barbados rum.
Bumbu is a rum brand owned by Sovereign Brands, a wine and spirits company based in New York that describes itself as “family-owned, family-run.” The company was founded by the brothers Brett and Brian Berish. The trade magazine The Spirits Business has given two founding years for it: 2000 in a report of September 2021, and 1999 in reports of January 2024 and December 2025. Brett Berish has led the company as chief executive, and The Spirits Business named Brian Berish as its chief operating officer in December 2025.
Bumbu sits in a portfolio that also includes the French sparkling wine Luc Belaire and the gin McQueen and the Violet Fog, both named on the company’s site. Two newer names followed in 2023: The Spirits Business reported in February that year that Sovereign had made its first whisky, a blended Scotch called The Deacon, in collaboration with Pernod Ricard, and in April that it had created Villon, a French liqueur.
In a May 2018 report The Spirits Business described Bumbu as a “Barbados-based rum brand” and a small-batch, limited-production rum, and quoted Brett Berish, introduced as chief executive of Sovereign Brands, “owner of Bumbu.” The rum’s own website was already online at bumbu.com by January 2016, Internet Archive captures show. Today the address forwards to a page on Sovereign Brands’ site whose footer names the Bumbu Rum Company LLC and which says it is intended for residents of the United States.

The range has three bottlings, each with its own category wording on the company’s American site. Bumbu The Original is labelled “rum with natural flavors”; the company says it is “blended from fine Barbados rum and hand-selected spices,” distilled in small batches and blended by hand, and bottled at 35 per cent alcohol in North America and 40 per cent elsewhere. Bumbu XO is listed simply as rum, and Bumbu Crème as a liqueur, at 15 per cent.
Where the rum is made depends on the bottling. The company says Bumbu The Original is made at a historic distillery in Barbados, which it says was founded in 1893 and has run for more than 120 years, with two continuous stills and a white-sand beach a few steps from the back door. The company does not name the distillery on that page. Its site says its distilleries are in Barbados and Panama, and describes the flagship as “distilled and blended in Barbados.”
The XO came later. The Spirits Business reported on 31 January 2019 that Sovereign Brands had extended the range with an 18-year-old expression, distilled and aged at a 120-year-old distillery in Panama, matured in bourbon casks and finished in sherry barrels from Andalusia. The same report described its packaging as a paperless glass bottle with a matte black finish.
The company also says Bumbu XO and Bumbu Crème each won a double gold medal at the 2022 New York World Wine & Spirits Competition.

The seven brands in this group are all whisky, schnapps and rum names: Black Velvet, Seagram’s 7 Crown, Alberta Premium, Lot No. 40, Rumple Minze, Dr. McGillicuddy’s and Bumbu. Whisky, schnapps and rum brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from names that still carry a founder’s or a distillery’s story to labels that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a bar rail.
A spirits brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its spirit is actually distilled and bottled.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its spirit is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Bumbu
Celebrity films, a shareholder and the British bar trade.
Bumbu’s advertising leaned on music stars. The Spirits Business reported in May 2018 that the rapper Lil Wayne starred in the brand’s first campaign, built around the phrase “greatest of all time,” or G.O.A.T., and directed by Eif Rivera; in August 2018 it reported a Bumbu advertisement in which DJ Khaled tried goat yoga, and in December 2018 and January 2019 a video series with Lil Wayne. In April 2018 the same magazine reported that the watchdog Truth in Advertising and partner groups had written to DJ Khaled about undisclosed paid alcohol posts on social media, naming Bumbu among the brands featured, and that he then edited or deleted the posts to add an #AD label.
A large drinks group then bought in. The Spirits Business reported on 1 September 2021 that Pernod Ricard had acquired a minority stake in Sovereign Brands, and on 14 October 2022 that it had increased its share significantly and would fully consolidate the company in its accounts once the deal closed, expected in November 2022. In the United Kingdom, Pernod Ricard UK took over distribution of the Sovereign Brands portfolio from 1 July 2023, replacing Amber Beverage Group, the magazine reported. In January 2024 it reported that Bumbu was the biggest-selling super-premium rum in the UK on-trade, and in December 2025 it still described the Berish family company as Bumbu’s owner, with Pernod Ricard holding a stake.
The name needs care online. In Indonesian, bumbu is the word for a spice blend or spice paste, English Wikipedia says, and in the early 2000s the bumbu.com address carried an unrelated Indonesian food and travel site, Internet Archive captures show. Bumbu is also the name of a commune in Kinshasa.
For a design guide, Bumbu shows how a spiced rum built its name through celebrity films and a family company’s portfolio before a global group took a stake. Compare Mount Gay, the Barbados rum with a 1703 deed, and Havana Club, the Cuban rum brand. For this guide we use spiced amber, cask brown and matte black with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
